Policy and Procedures: Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing Academic Year 2009 The Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing course is offered in Johannesburg. Students must attend the compulsory classroom contact sessions at the IMM GSM campus. The course extends over a two-year period and is divided up as follows: •

The first 12 months are devoted to course work. The following 12 months are allowed for the completion of the dissertation, which must be submitted to the IMM GSM by the 31 January each year. Should a student fail to submit the final dissertation by the specified date, the student must pay and reregister for the dissertation.
The student accepts that upon acceptance to the IMM GSM, they will immediately become liable to the IMM GSM for the course fees. The student must pay the course fees on or before the due dates. Should the student withdraw from the programme at any time, they will give notice of their intention and immediately pay all monies owing to the IMM GSM. No refunds will be granted. The student must settle all outstanding monies owing to the IMM GSM before they are awarded the qualification. Failure to do so, will result in the Diploma being withheld at the graduation ceremony. The modules are presented within the twelve months of any academic year. Forty hours of classroom contact time is allocated to each module. The forty hours of classroom contact time is spread over five consecutive days with a maximum of eight hours of classroom contact time per day. Tuition in each module will normally commence on a Monday morning. Attendance by students of these forty hours of classroom contact time is compulsory. Note: A student can only be excused from classroom attendance for a total of five hours during each module. Failure to comply may result in the student having to reattend the module. Each student will be formally evaluated by means of: • A written three to four hour open-book examination on the morning following the last lecture of each module. In addition to the formal evaluation, the student will also be evaluated on: • Attendance of the required forty hours of tuition in each module;

Participation in classroom activities during the course of each week; Participation in group activities during the course of each week.
The dissertation will be on a topic chosen by the student and approved by supervisors of the IMM GSM's Academic Board. The dissertation is normally limited to 10 000 words and the student must demonstrate the capacity to do independent research. Students must obtain a pass mark of at least 50% to qualify for the diploma. Examinations Each student will be formally evaluated by means of a written three to four hour openbook examination on the morning following the last lecture of each module. The students must attend and write examinations in four modules (two core modules and two electives). Learners have an option to attend and write exams in a fifth module (certain terms and conditions apply when attending a fifth module). Examination fees are included in the cost per module. Language Policy of the IMM GSM Examination papers are available in English only. You are requested to answer Examinations in this medium. Examination Timetable A three to four-hour open-book examination will be written on the morning following the last lecture of each module. The examination dates and times will be communicated to each student in their course pack as part of the course information for each module. Extra Time No extra time will be allowed to any learner attempting any of the examinations. Past Examination Papers Past Examination Question Papers will only be available to students on request by the lecturer. Open-book Examinations The Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing’s examinations are open-book examinations. Learners are permitted to refer to any support material during the examinations. Use of computers during examinations The use of a laptop computer during an exam is permitted. This must be organised with the Postgraduate Administrator beforehand to ensure that a separate venue is available. The typed examination answer/s must be printed and checked (with the assistance of the invigilator) before the learner leaves the examination premises. The printed copy must be included in the examination answer book. No typed answers will be accepted after the completion of the examinations. The student must ensure that he or she has the necessary equipment in order to save their examination from their laptop and print their examination (on a printer provided) so that the printed copy can be included in their examination answer booklet. Answers must be typed in Arial, 12 using 1½ line spacing.
Cancellation of Examinations If a student is not able to write an examination as specified in the examination timetable, a written request must be submitted to the Postgraduate Administrator at least two (2) days before the examination date. Identification at the Examination Venue You must take your ID / Passport and your IMM GSM student number with you to the examination venue for identification purposes. Failure to produce positive identification at the examination venue could result in your scripts not being marked. Release of Results The results for the examination per module will be released three to four weeks after the examination date. Your examination results will be communicated to you via e-mail. Should a learner require a confirmation letter or an updated academic record, a request in writing must be made to the Postgraduate Administrator. Unless prior arrangements have been made in writing to the IMM GSM regarding course payments, examinations results will not be released to students who have fees outstanding. Supplementary Examinations Should a student fail an examination, the learner must rewrite the examination within three (3) months of the examination date. A suitable date can be organised with the Postgraduate Administrator. Failure to do so will result in the learner having to pay for and re-attend the specific module in the new academic year. Should the learner fail the supplementary examination, the learner must attend the course at his/her own cost at the date set by the IMM GSM and attempt the examination after the module.
Note: Once marked, examination scripts are moderated to ensure accuracy, fairness and consistency of marking. Examination results, once published, are FINAL. Examination scripts will NOT be re-marked under any circumstances. Learners who have any queries must address these queries to the IMM GSM in writing.

No smoking / eating is allowed in the Examination Hall. All rough work must be done in the Answer Book and crossed through. Learners who are found cheating, or who are suspected of cheating, in the examinations, will be suspended from the IMM GSM pending a decision of the Academic Board. Failure to observe the rules will be considered cheating. Examinations may be written in ink only or a typed copy submitted. Cellular phones must be switched of during the duration of the examination. Learners acknowledge and accept that the IMM GSM is indemnified against all liability, loss, personal injury or damage from any cause arising, which learners and / or their dependants may sustain or suffer as a result of the students being on IMM GSM’s premises and / or writing any examination in any examination hall chosen by the IMM GSM. Calculators are permitted. Learners may not borrow anything from any other student during the course of the examination. NOTE: The exams will be conducted in strict silence. Students who are disruptive will not be allowed to complete the examination. If you require anything during the course of the examination session, raise your hand to gain the attention of the invigilator.

Answer books are the property of the IMM GSM and may not be removed from the examination hall. However examination question papers become the property of the learners and may be removed from the examination hall. Supplementary Answer Books are available on request from the Invigilators. If a student uses more than one script, the number of scripts used must be indicated on both scripts, e.g. 1 of 1. The invigilator will check this. Ensure that loose answer sheets are placed in your answer book. Ensure that your student number is entered in the appropriate blocks on each answer sheet handed in. Learners are advised to arrive at the examination venue at least 30 minutes before the start of the examination and to be seated 10 – 15 minutes prior to the start of the examination. Learners who arrive late will not be granted extra time in which to complete the examination. Familiarise yourself with these rules. Failure to observe the rules will be considered cheating.
