Getting Started in 3D with 3ds Max

Post Production In the real world of creating visualization projects, the content you produce using 3ds Max is not always the end result that will be delivered to the client. Post production is a catchall phrase that can mean a number of things—assembling and organizing all the scene assets for delivery to the client or the compositing of layers of content, for example. The preplanning stages of a project are also a time for organization to determine where the content will be stored and how the final product will be delivered. But now, at the end of the project, you need to perform tasks like replacing simple stand-in objects in scenes with more complex models for final rendering and saving objects that you have created for the project into library folders on the hard drive so that they can be accessed for future projects. Compositing, the stacking of layers of rendered scenes and rendered elements in compositing software like Autodesk’s® Composite or Adobe’s® After Effects, is a method of combining the final rendered layers into the final image or animation, and it is also a part of the postproduction process. Compositing layers that were individually handled by different departments within the team allows for focused adjustments per layer, before combining the layers and further editing them into a comprehensive presentation for delivery. In Part 2, you will learn the fundamentals of the following aspects of postproduction: •

Scene assembly: You will learn how to locate and manage scene assets and build object libraries. You’ll also learn about substituting simple objects in a scene with complex replacements and renaming improperly named objects. Compositing: 3ds Max ships with a program called Autodesk Composite. With it you will learn the fundamentals of layering and editing rendered scenes and elements into a final image or animation.
