Post resurrection Appearances – Breakfast with Jesus April 30, 2017 John 21 INTRODUCTION It has been two weeks since Easter for us. There have been two post-resurrection appearances by Jesus to the disciples. We, like those first disciples, seem to quickly forget God’s awesome power as seen in the resurrection of Christ. Why is that? Could it be as simple as because we did not have breakfast with Jesus? Let’s take a look … WARM IT UP Do you eat breakfast? Why or why not? If you do, what do you eat for breakfast? What is your favorite meal of the day? TALK IT OVER 1. Read Luke 5:1-11 and John 21:1-14. Compare and contrast these two miraculous catch stories. What similarities and differences do you notice? 2. Read Colossians 1:9-14. Why do you think John 21 is really a passage about church? That is, dining with Jesus means we dine with others! (church = the called out believers hint: Colossians 1:13) 3. Read John 21:15-19 and Exodus 15:25. Does Jesus’ questioning of Peter seem harsh to you? Why or why not? What do you think Jesus’ purpose is with Peter during this line of questioning? 4. Read John 21: 20-25. Why is it significant that Jesus does not allow Peter to compare his life to John’s? 5. Reread John 21:17 and compare with 2 Corinthians 7:10. Why can we say Peter’s feelings were not hurt, instead something deeper was happening? Why is this really a passage about freedom?

WORK IT OUT 6. Notice Jesus does not talk about Peter’s behavior in this passage. Why do you think this is significant? Why might we as believers tend to focus on behavior? 7. On Sunday we said, “All sin is pushing God to the margins of our lives … and repentance is always engaging how this sin is pushing God to the margin of our lives.” How does the reality of sin and repentance play out in your life? How can you support each other as a growth group in dealing with sin and experiencing repentance? 8. We said having breakfast with Jesus is done with others, with a surgeon, and with a purpose. Where/how in your life is this “dining experience” being carried out? Where/how would you like this “dining experience” to become more of a reality?

PRAY IT THROUGH Offer prayers of praise for where you can see God’s resurrection power transforming our lives and communities. Offer prayers of confession for when and where we have pushed Jesus to the margins of our lives. Offer prayers of petition for where you would like to see Christ’s resurrection power intercede and transform our lives and communities.
