Power of Art conference With support from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
April 27-29, 2017 Overview The 24th Annual Power of Art Conference is the product of a two-decade-long partnership between The Lab School of Washington and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. The Power of Art Conference has two objectives: to share a highly successful approach to teaching students with learning differences through an arts-based curriculum that is transferable to all classrooms of diverse learners; and to empower arts educators and school leaders to be persuasive voices in the national conversation about the critical relevance of the arts in the education for all children in all subjects. For 50 years, The Lab School has been successfully using all the arts to teach academic subject matter to students with learning differences. Through the support of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, each year we offer the opportunity for teachers and school leaders from all parts of the country to experience The Lab School methods and expertise, with the intention of encouraging these teaching practices and supporting efforts to expand the national thinking about the power of art in education. Approximately 40 participants will be selected through a competitive application process. All costs of attending the conference, with the exception of some travel expenses, will be covered for those who are selected.

April 27-29, 2017 Who Should Apply? School Leaders Principals/Heads of Schools School or School System Administrators Teachers of students grades 1-12 Teachers of arts in all forms – visual and performing Content-area teachers Experience with students with learning differences helpful, but not required Special consideration will be given to applicants who apply in teams: preferably one school leader and one teacher. Previous Power of Art participants are not eligible. Completed applications are due electronically on February 15, 2017. Selected participants will be notified by March 1, 2017.

April 27-29, 2017 Conference Program Thursday, April 27 Participants will arrive in the afternoon and be lodged at the Fairfax Hotel near DuPont Circle in northwest Washington, DC. Thursday night reception and dinner hosted once again at the home of the former Chairman of the Board of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, including a tour of his acclaimed art collection. Friday, April 28 Breakfast at the hotel followed by a day at The Lab School of Washington. The day’s schedule will include: A presentation by Katherine Schantz, Head of The Lab School of Washington, on the importance of arts in schools, the shifting paradigm in the understanding of learning differences and an introduction to current knowledge of the role that arts plays in language development. Tours of The Lab School of Washington, including visits to classrooms and makerspaces and observations of Lab methodologies. Before and after lunch we will offer workshops facilitated by Lab School art faculty and administrators that will highlight examples of teaching students academic material through the arts and experiential instruction, with particular emphasis on how these approaches, successful for students with learning differences, apply to all students in all settings. We will include several options for more in-depth observation of Academic Clubs in session. The day will conclude with a reception for the participants and the conference faculty in Lab’s new high school Forum. Participants will be returned to the hotel and be free to have dinner on their own. Saturday, April 29 Breakfast at the hotel followed by a day at The Lab School of Washington. The Saturday program will take place on The Lab Campus and will lead off with the presentation by an outside expert on arts education, followed by additional faculty and administration workshops, and a panel discussion among Lab faculty artists and administrators who have taught in public school and other more traditional settings. Lunch will be provided at Lab, followed by time for reflections, completion of evaluations and awarding of certificates created by Chris Rauschenberg, Chairman of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. The Program will end at approximately 2:30 pm. Participants must stay for the entire program. If this schedule causes travel hardship, we may be able to offer an additional night of hotel stay on a case by case basis.

Single occupancy hotel accommodations will be provided from check-in on Thursday, April 27 through checkout on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Fairfax Hotel. Participants are expected to participate in the entire conference. If long distance travel requires an overnight stay Saturday, it may be possible to provide hotel accommodations for Saturday night on a case by case basis. All transportation between the hotel and other conference venues will be provided. Meals provided include: Cocktails and dinner Thursday night; breakfast, lunch and cocktails Friday; breakfast and lunch Saturday. As all other expenses of the conference are covered by the generosity of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, if possible, we encourage participants to arrange their own transportation to and from Washington DC.
