• PERSISTANT • HIGH YIELD POTENTIAL • EXCELLENT PROTEIN
• GOOD DROUGHT TOLERANCE • GREAT DIGESTIBILITY • WINTER HARDY • HEAVY SEEDER • GOOD DISEASE RESISTANCE
Prairie Orchard grass was developed by the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station’s Forage Grass Breeding Project. This orchardgrass cultivar has been released because of its combination of high forage yield and desirable maturity. It displays greater plant vigor, more leafiness, an upright growth habit, mid-season plant maturity and increased seed-head production. Prairie is very winter hardy. It is an easily established orchard grass. Its digestibility is higher than any other mid season maturity varieties. Prairie is more resistant to diseases such as rust and scald. It is a heavy reseeder and makes for more persistent stands. It has been trialed in Kentucky and consistently out performs other varieties. Prairie is excellent for grazing, hay production and silage. It will perform well in mixtures with other grasses and legumes. The best selling points are Prairie’s good disease resistance, high yield potential, high digestibility, winter hardiness and stand ability. TESTIMONIAL “Prairie Orchardgrass has the best drought tolerance of any orchardgrass I’ve ever planted. For several years I have grown Prairie orchard grass. I’ve tried other types but Prairie is superior in growth. I believe it is the hardiest through the winter. I know I get an extra cutting off of Prairie orchard grass. There is only one thing I don’t like about it: When I sell it to customers they like it so well, it makes it hard to sell my alfalfa and bermuda hay.” Daniel Harden –Hay Producer placed first with his Prairie Orchard grass hay in the Southeastern Hay contest with 15.8% crude protein, 65.8 TDN and 177.6 RFQ. “Prarie took the drought better than anything else. The stand came back from the ‘08 drought. Prarie out grows everything. If I was planting an orchard grass today - Prarie would be the choice.” Jerry Clark –Cattle farmer
