Preparing Students For Online Testing Familiarize Students With The Test Formatting
Format classroom presentations in the same format of the test. o Use classroom projectors and document cameras to display formatted problems and passages to students. This is a tried and true test preparation step and is similar to the same step used in preparing for paper-and-pencil testing.
Improve Student Skills in Reading Online Directions
Use your classroom website to provide practice following online directions o Include assignment and project directions on your classroom website. When students use your classroom website to find lesson and project directions online, they are practicing the important skill of reading and interpreting directions for online testing at the same time. Display these instructions on the projector while students are working on independent practice activities. Provide practice activities that require students to follow written online directions without teacher assistance. o Facilitate during these activities to support students as they gain this critical skill. This can be accomplished whole group by displaying the instructions on the projector.
Teach Students How To Use Scratch Paper
Provide instruction and set expectations for students throughout the year on using scratch paper to complete their tests o Establish classroom expectations for students that includes work on scratch paper. Collect, evaluate, and provide feedback regarding the use of scratch papers throughout the year. Provide guidance and strengthen skills for those students who struggle with the use of scratch paper. o Based on your content area, provide techniques to improve the use of the scratch paper during testing. For example, a math teacher may have the students fold their papers into 8 sections to provide rectangle shapes that help students keep their work organized and easy-to-read. In Science, students may be taught to write down a mnemonic on the scratch paper as soon as the test begins to remind them of an important concept learned in class.
Provide Test Practice in the Computer Labs
Prepare a test online at one of the sites listed in the Resources section at the end of this list and take students to one of the computer labs to take the exam. o Practice online test taking by having students take occasional tests in the computer lab.
Preparing Students For Online Testing
o Require scratch paper as part of the test-taking process. Consider providing a grade and/or feedback for the submitted scratch paper component of the test. Use the Quiz activity modules in Moodle to practice online testing. o Create quizzes in Moodle to provide online testing experience. Moodle’s computerized-grading ability can help teachers gather data that can be used to strengthen and remediate test-taking skills.
Practice Using Classroom Timers
Display and use online classroom timers like those listed in the Resource section of this paper to prepare for online tests that are timed. o Use the timer in class so that students learn how to use it to guide their timing in the test.
Discuss Testing Navigation
Prepare students for the look of the online testing navigation, when possible. o Discuss the online testing navigation interface with students. Give the students the opportunity to view the navigation and ask questions or clarify the purpose of an icon or command used in the test. o Prepare students to read the test navigation instructions before they begin the exam. Remind them that they have developed their skills in reading directions and to apply those to mastering the test navigation, as well.
Continue Best Practices in Test Preparation
Reaffirm the important test-taking skills that produce positive test outcomes regardless of the testing medium. o Pay attention in class o Take organized and detailed notes o Complete homework assignments o Study o Attend tutoring sessions or ask for help from your teacher, when needed o Rest the night before the test o Eat before the test
