JEWISH FAMILIES OF PROSSNITZ [PROSTEJOV] BROCH - FLESCH Broch and Neubroch [originally Kohn / Kohen] 



There were four distinct branches of the Broch family, with two of them using both the Broch and Neubroch surnames. In his history of the Prossnitz Jewish community, Dr. Leopold Goldschmied writes the following [“Geschichte Der Juden In Prossnitz”, footnote, p. 504]: “Gabriel Broch = Ben Rabbi Aron Kohen hiess ursprunglich Gabriel Aron. Auch hier sind zwei Linien zu unterscheiden. Die erste, zu der Gabriel und Salomon Broch gehoren, und eine zweite, welche sich von Abraham Pinkas herleitet und zum Unterschiede Neybroch naunte.” Translated to English: “Gabriel Broch, son of Rabbi Aron Kohen, was originally Gabriel Aron. Again two lines are to be distinguished. The first, to which Gabriel and Salomon Broch belonged, and a second, which derived from Abraham Pinkas and which Neybroch distinguished as a difference.” A BROCH male was originally KOHEN, and was the father of: o Salomon, b. c1700; deceased by 1768. He m. Anna [b. c1714]. She died in household #23, 22 Feb 1789.  Sara Broch, b. 1735; d. household #23, 11 Jul 1830. Unmarried  [Rabbi] Aron Broch, aka Rabbi Aron Kohen, b. 1740 o Bernard, b. c1702; deceased by c1758. His wife’s name is unknown, but they were the parents of:  Schendel Broch [Neubroch], b. 1724; d. Prostejov, 9 Mar 1802, age 78. She was unmarried.  Pinkus Broch, b. 1730  Aron Broch [Neubroch], b. 1737 o Joseph, b. c1705. His wife’s name is unknown, but they were the parents of:  Baruch Broch, b. 1729

First Branch -- Descendants of Salomon Broch, aka Salomon Kohen  SALOMON BROCH, aka SALOMON KOHEN, b. c1705 o Salomon’s wife was likely the “Anna Broch(in), age 74” who d. in household #23, 22 Feb. 1789. Their children were:  Sara Broch, b. 1735. “Sara Broch, age 95, d. household #23, 11 Jul 1830.”  Arron Broch, b. 1740  ARRON BROCH, aka RABBI ARON KOHEN, b. 1740, o “Geschichte Der Juden In Prossnitz”, by Dr. Leopold Goldschmied, Prossnitz, p. 501: “Diese beiden neu aufgefundenen Protokollbucher setzen uns in den Stand, eine vollstandige Liste der Judenvorsteher von Prossnitz aufzustellen. Gabriel Broch,” which translated to English means: “Two newly discovered logbooks have enabled us to draw up a complete list of the Jewish presidents of Prossnitz. Among the men, as ancestors of families, who have been greatly respected here, have held the office of Judges. Prostejov, 16 Oct 1803 [witnesses: Aron Neubroch, Suskel (?) Zelinger (?)].” She died in Jun 1811: “Anna Selinger, age 40, d. household #40, 23 Jun 1811.” [See SELINGER]  Schendel, b. 1773. “Abraham Lipnik, age 32, widower, and Schendel [no surname given], age 28, m. Prostejov, 6 Apr 1801 [witnesses: Lasar Kohn, Aron Broch].”  Sara, b. c1775. “Baruch Funk, age 23, household #23, and Sara Broch, age 22, m. 1 Jan 1794 [witnesses: Arron Broch Kohn, David Hirsch].” She is also seen as “Sorl” and “Rosel”. She died in Mar 1810: “Sara Funk, age 34, d. household #24, 28 May 1810.” [See FUNK]  Hitzl [no surname], b. household #23, 10 Jan 1785. “Peretz Neubroch, age 32, and Hitzel Broch, age 22, m. Prostejov, 15 Mar 1807 [witnesses: Aron Neubroch, Aron Broch].” She died in Sep 1831: “Hizel Neubroch, age 46 [female], d. household #24, 1 Sep 1831.” [See NEUBROCH]  Gabriel, b. household #23, 16 Jul 1788. “Gabriel Broch, age 20, and Gluckel Back, age 17, m. Prostejov, 3 Jan 1809 [witnesses: Aron Broch, Aron -------].” Following Gluckel’s death, he married 2nd, 27 Mar 1833, Elka [Ewa] Broda: “Gabriel Broch, age 45, household #27, widower, and Ewa Broda, age 36, widow, m. Prostejov, 27 Mar 1833 [witnesses: Jacob Steinscneider, Georg Steinschneider].” [See Goldschmied passages above]. Gabriel Broch died in Vienna on 6 Nov 1874, age 86. Did he have a third wife “Anna”, or was the identical to “Elka”? There were several distinct branches to the Brull family in Prossnitz. All descend from JOSEPH [JESUA] [SCHEYA] BRULL, b. c1680. He may have been identical with JOSEF BRILLIN, oldest son of Wolf Brillin [b. Fulda, Germany, 1644] and grandson of Rabbi Meschullam Eliesar Sussman Brillin [b. Fulda, c1594, d. Fulda, 1660], Rabbi in Worms, Germany, 1637-1652. Wolf Brillin moved eastward from Fulda and Worms, was living in Bamberg, Germany 1692, and may have died in Vienna. His known children were: Josef, Meir, and Chana [b. Bamberg, 1692, d. Vienna, 7 Nov 1720, m. Low Kalishheim-Nassau].
