The Early SKILLZ Program focuses on eight early skills that are fundamental for 3 and 4-‐year old development: 1. KICKING 2. PUNCHING 3. BLOCKING 4. CRAWLING 5. HOPPING 6. ROLLING 7. RUNNING 8. CATCHING
8 Program: Early SKILLZ (3 and 4-‐yrs.) Skill: Kicking Drill: Listen for your number Equipment needed: Four numbered circles and 3 blocks Instructors needed: One
Description: In this drill the students will stand on a numbered circle. When you call their number, they will run to the middle of the deck and kick a stack of blocks over. This is great for teaching students how to focus and wait for their turn.
Steps: 1.
2.
Lay out four numbered circles on one end of the training deck and place a stack of blocks in the middle of the training deck. Assign one student to each number. If you have more than four students, you can split them into groups and have each group take turns.
3.
Make sure each student remembers his number.
4.
Explain that when you call out their number, they must run to the middle of the deck and kick the bottom block over. This will help them build focus with their feet too!
5.
Call out a random number. That student must run to the middle of the training deck and kick the stack of blocks over.
6.
Continue until each student has a turn.
7.
The kids love this drill because they like knocking things over, so they’ll listen really well during this drill.
8.
You can make this drill even more challenging by having the students kick the middle block on the second round, and then see if they have the focus to only kick the top block on the third round.
9 Program: Early SKILLZ (3 and 4-‐yrs.) Skill: Punching Drill: Pass the line Equipment needed: 3 to 4 small square targets, tape (or white belts) Instructors needed: One per line
Description: In this drill the students will practice controlling their power by striking a target over the line. This drill will build gross motor skills and focus as well. Steps: 1. Divide your students into several lines with no more than 4 per line. Using masking tape or a white belt mark a line that is approximately 3-‐ steps away from the start of each line. 2. For each line the instructor will have the first student stand up in a guarding stance. The instructor will hold the small target at striking distance from the student as shown in the picture.
3. The student will strike the target with a punch with good power so that the target flies over the line that is marked 3-‐steps away. Give the student three shots to strike the target over the line.
4. Repeat the drill until every student has at least two turns.
5. To make the drill fun, switch roles and have the students hold up the targets as the instructors strike the targets with great power.
10 Program: Early SKILLZ (3 and 4-‐years old) Skill: Blocking Drill: Dizzy Blocks Equipment needed: One foam sword and one ring per line Instructors needed: One per line
Description: The students will spin in a circle three times and then block a foam sword as it swings towards their head. Steps: 1. Divide your students into groups. 2. Lay a ring on the ground and sit next to the ring with a foam sword. 3. Explain the rules: • When it is your turn, you will stand in the middle of the ring. • You will spin around four times while staying inside of the ring. • Then, you will block the foam sword as I swing it towards your head four times, switching arms each block. • Make sure you keep your fists tight. • Make sure you pull your other arm to your side as you block. 4. Continue until each student has a turn. 5. You can make it fun by making it a race to see which person is the fastest.
11 Program: Early SKILLZ (3 and 4-‐year olds) Skill: Crawling Drill: Race to the ring Equipment needed: Eight colored rings (or similar objects) Instructors needed: One
Description: In this drill the students will practice bear crawling to various rings. Bear crawling targets the core muscles and at the same time builds hand-‐eye-‐ coordination along with hand-‐foot coordination. In this drill, the students are building these skills as they race to the rings. Steps: 1. Lay out eight rings spread out randomly around the mat. 2. Explain the rules: • I will call out a color and you will bear crawl to the ring matching that color. • Place one hand in the middle of the ring. • Try and be the first bear to place your hand in the middle of the ring. 3. Continue until you call out each color ring twice. 4. You can make it a fun game by giving each “bear” a point when they are the first one to reach the ring.
12 Program: Early SKILLZ (3 and 4-‐years old) Skill: Hopping Drill: Collect the circles Equipment needed: 5 rings and 5 rubber dots per line Instructors needed: One
Description: The students will hop into rings while collecting dots that are set in between each ring. This is great for helping the students build balance, spatial awareness, gross motor skills, and hand-‐eye coordination. Steps: 1. Divide your students into lines. 2. For each line you will need to lay out 5 rings with 5 rubber dots in between each ring. 3. Explain the rules: • When I say “go” you will jump into the first ring and pick up the first rubber circle. • Then you will jump into the second ring and collect the second circle, and so forth all the way down. • If you drop a dot, then you must start over. • The person that reaches the end the fastest is the winner. 4. Continue until each student has at least three turns.
13 Program: Early SKILLZ
Skill: Rolling Drill: Messy room Equipment needed: One dozen small balls Instructors needed: One per line
Description: In this drill the students will practice rolling small balls across the mat. The instructors will roll the small balls back, as the students try and get as many balls across to the instructors side when the time is up. The group with the most balls on their side has the messiest room. This is a great drill to build hand-‐eye-‐coordination, as well as special awareness.
Steps: 1.
2.
3.
Place your students on one side of the mat and the instructors on the opposite side. Using cones or similar objects mark the middle of the mat so that one side is the students’ room and the other side is the instructors’ room. Dump a bin of small balls in the middle of the mat.
4.
Explain the rules: • When I say “go” you will roll the balls to the instructors’ room. • The instructors are going to rolls the balls back to your room too. • You will keep rolling the balls to the instructors’ room so that your room is not messy. • After 30 seconds, the room that is the cleanest is the one with the least amount of balls.

Place a starting marker on one side of each line that is approximately 4 to 5 feet from the first cone. 2. Line up 1 student on each starting marker. 3. When you say “go” the students will run quickly to the first cone and pick it up, then run back and place the cone on the starting marker.
4. They will continue this drill by running to the second cone and stacking it on top of the first cone back at the starting maker; and then the third cone; and finish with the fourth cone. 5. Continue the drill until every student has at least two turns. 6. Make sure you monitor them closely as some younger students may pick up all 4 cones at once.
