Pum ori. W e clim bed the norm al southw est ridge route on Pum ori. Clim bing began on A pril 10 and on the 11th we set up Cam p I at 5700 m eters. There were no clim bing problem s in getting to C am p I but the route was threatened from the left (K ala Patar) side by ice- and rockfall. W e fixed rope above Cam p I. Cam p II w as set up on A pril 15 at 6100 m eters at the foot o f the tow ers on the southw est ridge. O ur fem ale m em ber, M argret G abl, reached Cam p II. Betw een C am ps II and III we had rock o f UIAA G rade III and IV and ice up to 60°. W e fixed 1000 m eters o f rope up to Cam p III, w hich we established at 6550 m eters on A pril 18. W e found there the dam aged tent o f the ill-fated A m erican 1984-5 w inter expe dition but saw no signs o f their bodies. On April 21 M arkus Fringer, A dreas Praxm arer and Josef K athrein clim bed steep ice and then easier slopes to reach the sum m it (7161 m eters, 23,494 feet) in five hours. On April 23 A lfred R ainer, W olfgang W ippler and Dr. G erhard K ienpointer got to the top. On April 26 I reached the sum m it with Sherpa Ang Lhakpa. W e rem oved m ost o f our fixed rope.
