What is a Trap? A Trap is when you force the offense into a situation they do not want to be in •Disrupt the offensive’s timing •Force poor shots •Create field advantage for your defense (i.e. bad spots) •Double team • Via picks • The follow • Off a slide

Where to set your Traps: 1

Walk into traps “doubles”
Mess up their timing
Force bad angles
Force player to commit to sweep: 1. Anticipate clear thru and jump him 2. Communicate to take away outlets
Force player to commit to dodge and 1. Stay on his hip (to force a crappy shot) 2. Walk into bad angle
Bad angle shot
Force player to commit to dodge or roll back and stay on it 1. Stay on his hip (deny roll)/slider to face 2. Know he is rolling and follow dodger from Adj or high crease
1. On ball defender leads and follow dodger from X (adj) and double from behind 2. On ball defender leads and slider comes to roll back 3. On ball defender trails and slide to his face

The Rules: •Stress the fundamentals on and off the ball • Bent knee/athletic stance • Ready position • Support the ball • Look the part • Posture • Communicate, communicate, and communicate • Listen, hear, talk •i.e.-stay on slide, peel, push etc

The Rules: On the Ball •Commit to initial dodge • Force one way, give slide the best opportunity • Force one way to send into a bad spot •Direct the dodger into your “Trap” •Do not chase stick • If beat, stay on his back • If you are even or ahead, turn him back (schematic) •Understand your Trap • Bad spot on the field • Bad angle shot • Double 7
TRUST DISCIPLINE TEAMWORK MENTAL TOUGHNESS PHYSICAL TOUGHNESS
The Rules: Off the Ball •Know the game plan- understand the what and who •Identify yourself, ”Communicate” • “Trap”- he could be beat but you see a trap possibility- no “peel” call •Ball You Man •Proper approach on slide • Where he is going • Under control • Through stick head and body “Trap”

Drills to help build a “Trap” 1 v 1 (with slider) • Sets the tone • Trapper (aka, the slider) communicates whether to stay on or not “peel” • Move how the on ball guy is playing (lead/trail/even) • The trap via slide
2v2 • Switch ALL picks at first • Get thru all picks and follow (THE FOLLOW TRAP) • The trap via picks • The trap via follow
4v4 • A few different options • Slide off initial pass • Have O set picks • Creates the slide/switch • Use rules discussed earlier • Teaches decision making
2v3 • Works on setting up a trap off a recovery • Must identify and communicate properly • Proper on ball • Proper slide angles • Starts off a quick slide • The trap bad angle • The trap via slide (follow)
6v6 • Lets see what we have to work with • Set plan before practice-OBJECTIVES • We will slide • We will force here • We want this___

Why use the “Trap”: 1.The Trap is a way to reinvent your slides 2.Even when you are beat, you aren’t beat 3.You don’t need to change your scheme’s the “buy-in” 4.Reinforces your fundamentals 5.Develops decision makers! 6.Have fun doing it 1. “Did you see that Trap?” 2. “Hey, let’s set this Trap?”
