Welcome! We’ll be making three bags in the series: October: Ellie Lum’s Market Tote Bag (Klum House Sewing Studio in North Portland) November: Ticklegrass Designs’ Bodobo Box Bag (supply list available in October) December: Lazy Girl Designs Bendy Bag and optional Fobio key fob (supply list available in November) The Pine Needle is ordering both the Bodobo Box Bag and Joan Hawley’s Bendy Bag patterns. You’ll need to download the pattern for the Market Tote Bag here: http://www.klumhouse.com/collection/custom-market-tote-bag-pdf-instructions Ellie is working on a paper copy of the pattern but it won’t be available until early next year. NOTE: the pattern is 50 pages long but you don’t need to print the entire pattern. Print the pages for the style of bag you are making: Print pages 1-4 Style A (leather handles attached with brads/rivets) ... print pages 5-26 Style B (sew on fabric straps) ... print pages 27-50 Additional options to customize either style: Interior metal zipper pocket(s) 4-compartment exterior pockets and doubled base layer for extra reinforcement (these go together) Magnetic snap closure
Bag exterior: 1 yard heavy weight canvas or denim for the bag exterior, base, interior pocket and optional straps. 54” wide cotton canvas is inexpensive and an ideal weight for the bag. Exterior pockets: 1/3 yard medium weight fabric such as linen or cotton/linen blend. If you choose quilting weight cotton, I recommend 5/8 yard; we’ll cut larger rectangles and fold them in half so it is doubled. Interior pocket(s): if you prefer to make the interior pockets from a contrasting fabric instead of the exterior bag fabric, you’ll need a 9½” x 14” rectangle for each pocket with an 8” metal zipper. If you have trouble finding 8” zippers, the interior pocket size can be modified to fit the zipper. The pocket width is the zipper length plus 1½” by 14” long. The pattern calls for one zipper pocket but you can certainly add a second so there’s a pocket on both sides. Interior pocket trim: two rectangles 2” x 8½” for each pocket.

Leather handles: two straps 27” long. Modern Domestic has these and the price is very good. Ellie has a leather handle kit on her website for $20. She has 3 colors of leather (natural, brown, black) and brads: http://www.klumhouse.com/collection/leather-handles-with-brass-hardware You can also find leather straps at Oregon Leather and Tandy Leather. The straps I saw at Tandy Leather are much more expensive. Irons, ironing boards and larger cutting mats are provided in the classroom
I will provide brads/rivets and all the tools necessary for setting them.
NOTE: do not use invisible zippers as these are intended to be installed in a garment seam. Nylon coil zippers and zippers with metal or plastic molded teeth work well for the interior bag pockets. Types of zippers: Nylon Coil Zipper:
Zipper with Plastic Molded Teeth:
Invisible Zipper (not suitable for this project):
Zipper with Metal Teeth:
While I personally like a medium weight zipper for the interior pocket, it is a personal preference; garment weight zippers work as well. Nylon coil zippers come in several weights; commonly available are 3mm (light or dress weight) and 5mm (medium weight).
In order to finish the bag in class, please cut and mark the bag fabrics as described on pages 6-11 for Style A (leather handles) or pages 28-32 for Style B (sew on fabric handles). Please read the pattern carefully and notice when fabric pieces are to be folded on a marked “line” vs. folded to a marked line. If you are using quilting weight cotton for the exterior pockets, here are substitute instructions for Step 4 on page 9 (Style A) or page 31 (Style B). From the 5/8 yard exterior pocket fabric, cut two rectangles 17½” x 19”. Fold in half and press to make rectangles that are 8¾” x 19”. Mark the center of each folded exterior pocket rectangle. Cut two interior pocket trim rectangles 2” x 8½”. Fold the interior pocket trim rectangles in half and press to make 1” x 8½” rectangles.
