Upper-Intermediate - Quitting My Job and Starting Over(D3043) A:

The start of the new year, what do you think? How many days did your company give you for the Chinese New Year holiday?

B:

Hi, are you talking about that private company? Don't even talk to me about it. I've already turned to a new chapter.

A:

What do you mean by that? What does turning to a new chapter mean?

B:

I quit ages ago. Now I'm at a foreign-owned company starting a new chapter in my career.

A:

ā? cízhí la? zuò de hǎohāo de, zěnme shuō bù zuò jiù bù zuò le ne? Huh? You quit? You were doing so well, why would you throw it all away like that?

B:

Doing well? Only god knows what I've been through!

A:

zhème yánzhòng ā, dàodǐ fāshēng le shénme shì? wǒ kàn nà jiā sīqǐ xiàoyì bùcuò, qiánjǐng dào yě guāngmíng, nǐ kě bié shì yìqì yòngshì ā。 I didn't realize it was so bad. What happened to you? I thought that that private company was quite efficient and that the prospects looked quite bright. You shouldn't let your emotions affect your decisions.

B:

yě méiyǒu shénme tèbié de shì, jiù juéde xīnli tè wěiqū。 xīnshuǐ dī, suǒsuì de shì yīduī, shàngxiàbān tōngqín shíjiān jiā qǐlái děi huā qù dàbàntiān。 It wasn't anything in particular. I just felt very hard-done by. My salary was low, I had a load of trivial matters to handle and adding the commute to and from work, I was spending over half the day at work.

A:

tīng nǐ zhèmeshuō, yě zhēn shì gǎn tóng shēnshòu, xiǎng cízhí yīdìng shì juéde tài biēqū le。 Listening to you, I really have the same experience. That you wanted to resign is because you really felt like you were hard done by.

B:

shéi shuō bùshì ne? zhěngtiān zuò niú zuò mǎ de, fúlì bù hǎo jiù bù shuō le, kěshì yīdàn chū le wèntí hái dōu děi wǒ lái bēihēiguō。 You're not wrong there. Every day I worked like a dog. It's not even just that there were no benefits, but when something went wrong, I'd be the one who had to take the blame for it.

A:

That's really a pity!

B:

kěbushì ma? jiǎndān zǒngjié jiùshì: qián shǎo shì duō lí jiā yuǎn, wèi dī quán qīng zérèn zhòng。 Isn't it just? Summing it up, it pays peanuts, you have to do everything, it's really far away, my position was low, I had no power but with all the responsibility.
