Rainwater Pumping Station Viernheim Viernheim, Germany
The rainwater pumping station is the main pumping station of the City of Viernheim. Water for 32.300 inhabitants and rainwater from an area of 720 ha flows into it. During dry periods, the waste water is pumped at a rate of 8.000 – 10.0000 m3/day to the sewage treatment plant Weinheim via 6 speed regulated pumps. During rainy weather the inflow of water may rise dramatically. This inflow cannot be managed by the small waste water pumps. In this case the water is pumped by 7 rainwater pumps of each 400 kW to rainwater basins. Afterwards, the rainwater is pumped to the sewage plantby the smaller speed controlled pumps. Especially during rainy weather, no interruptions of pump operation are permitted as this may cause flooding of the City of Viernheim. The available power supply from the grid is not sufficient to start and to operate more than one rainwater pump. Due to this reason and due to the necessity of 100% availability of the pumps the power supply of the pumping station is secured by 6 diesel generators of each 700 kW. The pumping station works completely automatically. Staff is present only during the daytime.
