Jan 5, 2017 – Mar 23, 2017: Second R.E.A.C.H. Program

R.E.A.C.H. Timeline Fall 2017: 2 -R.E.A.C.H. programs in Erie County & 1 Mercer County

Spring 2018: R.E.A.C.H. provided in Crawford County and Erie County.

Winter 2017: First R.E.A.C.H. program for students with intellectual disabilities.

Basics of R.E.A.C.H. ◊ One day a week for 8 weeks ◊Mission of R.E.A.C.H.: To work with students in the early stages of the transition process and provide them with knowledge and experiences necessary to achieve a community integrated employment outcome. ◊R.E.A.C.H. is staffed by OVR

Students of R.E.A.C.H.

Who is R.E.A.C.H. for? ◊ 5 - 8 students with disabilities ◊ Students must have at least two years left in high school. ◊ Ideally, the students in R.E.A.C.H. are unsure of what they want to do after high school or have unrealistic career goals. ◊ Students who know they do not want to continue on to college are a good fit for R.E.A.C.H.

Incentive to Participate 1st Session: ◊ Uniforms (including shoes), iPad mini & graduation party. 2nd Session: ◊ Getting out of scheduled class & graduation party. 3rd Session & on: ◊ Getting out of scheduled class, uniforms and graduation party.

Exit Meetings After R.E.A.C.H. each the ERC meets with each participant individually to discuss: ◊ Progress throughout the program ◊ Discusses goals for the last two years of high school ◊ Completes the OVR application with the family

School’s Responsibilities ◊ A minimum of 10 student referrals. ◊ A room with computer, projector, and screen. ◊ Transportation to and from the employer. ◊ A contact person in case of emergencies. ◊ Participation in R.E.A.C.H. graduation ceremony. ◊ Room to meet with students for exit meetings at the school.

PM Portion of R.E.A.C.H. Week 1 ◊ Students transported to Salvation Army to put together a weeks worth of outfits on a budget.

PM Portion of R.E.A.C.H. Weeks 2-7 ◊ Students transported by school district busses to employer’s location. ◊ Jennifer, our BSR, finds business that are near the students school district. ◊ Students receive a tour of the facility, learn about careers available and then complete a job task, such as: folding boxes, organizing springs, picking green beans, etc.

PM Portion of R.E.A.C.H. Week 8 ◊ Students who fulfill REACH’s requirements will take part in a Graduation Ceremony and will receive a Certificate of Completion from the program. ◊ Graduation Ceremony will be followed by an ice cream or pizza party as a celebration for the students hard work. ◊ In the past, OVR staff have paid for Graduation refreshments, will now be asking community for donations.

Dress Code Policy ◊ If a student does not adhere to the dress code, their parent/guardian will be called to bring them clothes that fit within the dress code. ◊ If the parent/guardian is unable to bring the student dress code appropriate attire, the student will be excused from the program for the day and sent back to class. ◊ This may affect the student’s ability to graduate from the REACH program per the graduation requirements.

Dress Code ◊ Black, gray, khaki or navy dress pants. No shorts, no capris, no spandex, no active wear, no tapered leg, no rips or tears, no bold or large logos, and no pocket detail. Pants must fit appropriately in the area of the waist and in the length. ◊ Polo shirt, dress shirt or blouse. Must not be tight or revealing, no bold or large logos or graphics, no active wear, no t-shirts. ◊ Shoes should be close toed and appropriate for a work environment. Heels should not be worn.

Behavior Policy Behaviors expected from students involved in R.E.A.C.H. : ◊ Student will arrive on time. ◊ Student will respectful and will refrain from disruptive behavior. ◊ Student will listen and comply with REACH staff’s instructions and participate in all activities. ◊ Student will not take part in distractive talking. ◊ Student will turn off electronic devices before class begins. ◊ Student will not sleep or do work for other classes during R.E.A.C.H. ◊ Student will not bully other R.E.A.C.H. students.

This is not an all-inclusive list, but rather guidelines for expected behaviors.

Behavior Policy ◊ If a student is not following the behavior policy they will be given three opportunities to improve their behavior. ◊ If student is unable to change their behavior, they will be excused (fired) from R.E.A.C.H. for the duration of the day. ◊ If fired the student’s parents will be informed of the incident, as will the school staff. ◊ If the student is unable to compose themselves at the employers’ location, school staff will be called and they will address the situation with the student.

Graduation Requirements

Graduation Requirements

Attendance: ◊ Student must attend 7 full days of the R.E.A.C.H. program. ◊ Absences must be an excused absence from school. ◊ Students are expected to complete missed work in a timely fashion and can ask for assistance, if necessary.

Graduation Requirements Credits: Each student needs 50 credits in order to graduate from the R.E.A.C.H. program.

Students Receive Credits from: ◊ Pre-Test, Worksheets & Survey ◊ Questions for Employers ◊ Behavior Cards ◊ Post Tests

Graduation Requirements Students who do not earn 50 credits or are not present at REACH for 7 full days will not be invited to attend the graduation ceremony and will not receive a certificate of completion from the REACH program. This will not affect their school grades or their ability to apply for OVR services.

1st R.E.A.C.H. Program

◊ 11 students from Perseus House Charter School of Excellence. ◊ Offered during the summer-time. ◊ Worked with Sight Center of NWPA for space & transportation.

1st R.E.A.C.H. Program ◊ Was able to provide uniforms, lunch & iPad minis with KNFB Reader APP through provider agreement.

◊ Did pre- and post- test each week, results lead to most improved and MVE each week w/ candy bars.

2nd R.E.A.C.H. Program

◊ 6 students from Fort LeBeouf High School. ◊ Several students could not purchase afford clothes that would adhere to R.E.A.C.H.’s dress code. Lead us to request donations for clothing.

2nd R.E.A.C.H. Program ◊ Only did pre- & post- test at the beginning and end of the program. Students may have done better with more frequent testing. ◊ This session of R.E.A.C.H. lead to need for graduation requirements due to lack of participation from some students.

Model ◊ Several schools send 2-3 students each session of R.E.A.C.H. ◊ Takes place in a central location – possibly tech center or IU ◊ Schools responsible for transportation to and from central location ◊ Seeking out community resources donate a van & driver or funds for transportation, to and from employer.

R.E.A.C.H. for I.D. Pop. ***In Developmental Phase*** We are redesigning R.E.A.C.H. for students with intellectual disabilities. ◊ Mission remains the same ◊ No classes in AM portion, instead focus is on community resources ◊ In AM segment students will be transported to community resource offices and taught what each provider offers and eligibility criteria.
