Reading Partners November 2014
Marlyn's Message In Memoriam Leonard Fein 1934‐2014 Seventeen years ago, President Bill Clinton declared that all American children should be able to read by 4th grade. In response, Leonard Fein, a social progressive, fierce peacenik and staunch defender of Israel founded a little pilot reading program in Boston to gauge the need in the student population and the interest in the potential Jewish community pool of volunteers. Soon thereafter, he created the National Jewish Coalition for Literacy by reaching out to Jewish community organizations all over the U.S. Our little program started here in 1999 and just like the national program, we too have grown. In the first year, we read with around 20 children. Over the past 15 years, we have impacted the lives of 3000 local children and created a cadre of dedicated volunteers, ages 15‐90+. Fifteen years later, our service is as important and vital as ever. Even more vital! In his mission statement, Leonard wrote that "until 4th grade, children learn to read; from 4th grade on, they read to learn." In our schools, children are now reading to learn much earlier, with non‐ fiction texts showing up in 1st grade. Schools have raised the bar for these young
students and Reading Partners is responding to that change. Thank you Leonard, for your vision, supreme organizational skills, and for calling us to service.

Record Keeping Log Records demonstrate the success that the child is experiencing in reading and writing, which will help both the child and you to recognize your success. Keep a collection of the child's work in a folder.
1. Keep a journal or planning outline. 2. Record the books read or games played. 3. Keep writing samples. 4. Record success on a "Look What I Did" sheet. 5. Use Reading Partner's "Lesson Log" to record your session activities.
