Teacher note: Student pairs will race the clock to identify line(s) of symmetry in pictures and classify them into groups. Group size: pairs Materials: card backs, pages 19-21; card fronts, page 22; small plastic bags; stopwatch; small sticky notes or index cards; answer key, page 49 Before class: Run card backs, pages 19-21, on the back of card fronts, page 22, for each pair of students; cut out and laminate the cards for durability. Then place each set in a plastic bag; obtain a stopwatch or other device to keep time. Directions: • Divide students into pairs, and distribute a plastic bag containing cards and 4 sticky notes or index cards to each pair. • Instruct students on how to play. Have each pair label its sticky notes or index cards as follows: asymmetrical, 1 line, 2 lines, 3 or more lines. • Students will remove the cards from the bag and lay them face-down on a desk. • Upon the signal of “Ready, Set, Go!” students will turn over cards one at a time and look at the object on the card. As partners, they will determine how many—if any— line(s) of symmetry are in the object and group similar objects together in separate piles on their desk. They may have to rotate the cards to determine lines of symmetry. They will have six minutes to group as many of the pictures as possible. • When time is up, partners must stop and place any unused cards back in the bag. As a whole class, check the cards that were classified by each pair. If a card was placed in the wrong pile, players must place it in the bag with the other unused cards and not count it in their final total. • Once accuracy has been verified, each pair will count the total number of cards left on its desk to determine the winner of the race. The pair with the most cards is the winner. • Optional—allow the other pairs to finish sorting and classifying their unused cards by giving them three additional minutes. Be sure to check for accuracy when finished.

Extension: Ask students to define the main idea of the cards. They are all things found in a kitchen. Next, assign each pair of students a different room (living room, classroom, bedroom, study), or have pairs select a specific room on their own. Ask each pair of students to create a set of cards showing symmetrical items within the room. They can draw the objects, look for examples in old magazines, or use the Internet to find pictures. Pairs will then exchange card sets with another pair of students who will classify the objects by the number of line(s) of symmetry.
