Membership is a great, stress-free way to get involved in the outdoors! All TOWN groups are independent and free to develop their own bylaws and rules but must be registered with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department who holds the copyright to T.O.W.N. Each chapter holds monthly meetings and coordinates outings for a variety of activities for members. The great thing about each group is that each one has members interested in a wide variety of activities so if you are looking to find an outdoor hobby that fits you, this is a great place to sample a little of everything. TOWN group share their schedule of events with each other which allows members to attend activities sponsored by other groups and the groups often work together to coordinate exciting adventures!

Frequently Asked Questions What kind of activities do you do?

What is TOWN? TOWN groups are an off shoot of the very popular Becoming An Outdoors Woman program (BOW) initiated by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1993 which introduced women to a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Activities are held locally and even statewide and out of state to allow members to experience or increase their expertise in a wide variety of outdoor activities. This could include but is not limited to archery, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking/water sports, camping/backpacking, fishing, fly fishing, hunter education, map/compass navigation, outdoor photography, outdoor cooking, wilderness first aid / survival as well as just social outings such as shopping or visiting local attractions.

How are activities planned? All members are encouraged to propose trip ideas as well as to lead trips. Ideas are presented and discussed at meetings and then placed on the trip calendar.

BOW Workshops were an instant success, typically filling up within two days of being posted. As the workshops progressed, Texas Parks and Wildlife staff noticed the same women were coming back to the workshops again and again because once they returned home there was no one to share their new experience with.

How much do TOWN events cost?

In 1995, the idea for TOWN was born and the first chapters were formed by BOW Alumni. Since then, chapters have been established in major cities across the state including Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, San Antonio, San Marcos and Bastrop. You need not have attended a BOW Workshop or have a particular outdoor skill to participate in TOWN.

Are husbands, boyfriends or children allowed?

We try to keep all costs to a minimum and this can vary by event. Typical costs will be for park use fees, equipment rental, instructor fees or outfitter charges.

Do I need my own equipment? Depending on the type of event and equipment required, it could be provided by the instructor or perhaps members may have equipment to share. In some cases you may need your own. Events are typically limited to women only. However, special co-ed or child friendly events may occasionally be planned. However, any member who plans an event is free to designate it as co-ed or child friendly. Daughters are welcome at most events provided they meet the skill level required and are over 18.

How do I get involved in TOWN? Interested women 18 and over are welcome! You may attend two meetings or two outings before deciding if you wish to join. Dues are $20 per year (after August 1 they are $10 for the remainder of that year). For membership application or additional information email us at [email protected] or mail us at 601 N Bledsoe, Gilmer, Texas 75644.
