Reason: a process of supporting a claim/conclusion on the basis of evidence Reason is an ongoing phenomenon that theoretically has no end. A leap of faith has to be made at one stage or another. E.g. the 4 year old, who can keep asking “Why” forever. Emotion: A state of consciousness in which joy, sorrow, fear etc. is experienced as distinguished from cognition (thinking) and volition (willing). Emotions have reasons behind them. Reason and emotion are intertwined, not separate from one another Faith: Belief, trust in, and obedience to a deity. Deity; (1) Cosmological def.: a higher power that created the world and everything we know in it. (2) Ethical Notion: A higher power that provides guidance for right or wrong actions. (Higher Power: something other than any human being of group of human beings). Some Concepts Relating to Faith; Fideism: Belief that faith goes beyond what reason can prove. The Divine is revealed through faith and does not require reason. Rationalism: Belief that religion should be consistent with reason and evidence. Atheist: Someone who does not believe in the existence of God. Agnostic: Belief that the evidence to prove the existence of God is unknowledgeable. Critical Rationalism: Belief that faith is based on direct revelation of God and that there should no logical inconsistencies between revelation and reason. Spirituality: An inner attitude or respect for the sacredness of oneself and others, independently of belief in a particular religion o personal Godin association with compassion, justice, seeking and perseverance in the face of adversity.
