hen he scored twice on opening night in September of 1997, Ryan Walsh set a high standard for himself in Cape Breton. The product of Conception Harbour, Newfoundland, was no one-night wonder. The then 19 year old would finish the Eagles’ inaugural campaign with 47 goals and 54 assists, collecting 101 points as one of two Eagles in history to pass the century mark. Walsh was one of seven players Cape Breton inherited from Granby’s playoff run the prior season and took the biggest step forward of any in development with the move east. His scoring prowess was such that he collected 25 more points than the next highest point getter. This would earn him favour with the audience at Centre 200, as he won the fans-choice award at the year end banquet. It was one of four trophies he’d capture, along with being the team’s leading scorer, most sportsmanlike player and co-MVP. At the beginning of the 1998-99 season, Walsh was named the second captain in Screaming Eagles history. Additional responsibility only enhanced his play as he produced at a torrid pace to open the season. The third-year QMJHLer scored 35 goals and 44 assists in just 42 games, including a stretch of 13 consecutive games with a point. Cape Breton would use Walsh’s star power to help build for the future, dealing the elite forward to Shawinigan in return for Guillaume Lefebvre. Lefebvre was later moved in a deal that netted the Eagles’ Jean-Philippe Côté and Stuart MacRae. While the Eagles were benefiting from this chain of trades, Walsh moved on to excel at the university level, being named a second team CIS all-star while skating for UNB. With 180 points over 107 career Eagle games, he has more points per game (1.68) than any other player in team history. In the early years of growing pains for Cape Breton’s QMJHL franchise, Ryan Walsh was the first dynamic scorer to don the black and gold.
