Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV) World Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are unmanned submersibles controlled from the surface by skilled pilots. They’re widely used in the offshore oil and gas industry, as well as for inshore work like inspecting dams. The ROV is controlled by a pilot/co-pilot who is seated in an air-conditioned cabin. ROVs are also used in civil engineering, underwater archaeology, police work, defence industries, marine science and in the renewable energy sector. ROVs aren’t just used in the oil and gas sector, you could find yourself working for civil engineering projects like inspecting dams, ports and bridges, or in police investigations, marine science or archaeology. Civil and scientific work tends to be more stable, while the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors give you higher earning potential. *source: The Underwater Centre, Fort William Candidates who posses Nitec, Diploma or Degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, ROV is for you! Case Study Shamsul Bin Haron of 25 years of age, is a former technician with Singapore Aero Engine Services Ltd for 3 years. He wanted to do something more challenging and embark on a life experience that is unique and different from many others – the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). It was through Mendaki Sense that he was presented the opportunity to familiarize himself with life onboard a vessel, the IK Merdeka of Alliance Seaworks. Despite being far away from his family, he is able to communicate with them with the current satellite technology that enable him to stay connected almost everywhere. He can even Skype with his friends/family and keep abreast with the latest news. “My time spent working and living onboard a vessel, albeit short, has indeed been eye-opening one. I relish the experience gained and the company onboard the vessel. It takes a lot of sacrifices, compromises and courage to go where others won’t. I welcome the challenges and the unknowns that will hit me. I am ready.”
