Ren Land, exploration, science, and first ascents. Fol low ing a successful exped itio n to n eig h b o rin g M ilne Land in 2004, 50 m em bers o f West Lancashire C o u n ty Scouts again left the U.K. in July for the Arctic. O u r final destination was to be the rarely visited Ren Land, a m o u n tain o u s, glaciated area attach ed to th e m a in land o f East G reenland in th e in n erm o st d ep th s o f Scoresby Sund. T he m ain p arty arrived at C onstab le Point on July 20 by chartered flight from Iceland Air. O ver the following tw o days, the m ain p arty traveled via M ilne Land and on to Ren Land using Twin O tter aircraft, a helicopter, and six local speedboats. Base cam p was at a height o f 656m (GPS) on the n o rth side o f th e E dward Bailey Glacier, w hich flows do w n to the C atalindalen. Existing m aps are based on aerial photography, w ith very little g ro u n d exp lo ratio n . Collectively, the expeditio n explored alm o st 1,000 sq u are m iles o f glaciated m o u n ta in o u s te rra in in th e cen ter o f Ren Land. T his will im prove know ledge an d detail on the 1:50,000 m aps p repared by a N etw ork m em b er o f the expedition. T he area was a m ilieu o f spires an d m inarets—

far harsher than experienced in M ilne Land in 2004. D espite this, we clim bed 32 m o u n tain s— all o f w hich were first m o u n tain eerin g ascents an d have been nam ed, subject to confirm ation. M ost o f these were two to four days from base cam p. C hallenging gullies and mixed routes were put up by several m em bers o f the expedition. We also identified m ajor clim bing objectives, p a r ticularly for those into big wall climbing; som e were th o u g h t to be well in excess o f 1,200m high. D u rin g o u r tim e in East G reen lan d , the ex p ed itio n also established n e u tro n -sen sin g e q u ip m en t for cosm ic ray analysis o n b eh a lf o f th e U niversity o f C en tral L ancashire, caught seed bugs for the U niversity o f Stirling, an d collected glacial rafted debris for the University o f Lancaster. From co m p ariso n w ith th e available aerial p h o to g ra p h s (1987) we will be able to provide an indication o f the rate o f recession o f th e glaciers in the area. T he w eather was fairly typical for th e Arctic. O f the 32 days in East G reenland we expe rienced only tw o o f low m ist/light rain, 16 days o f p red o m in an tly su n n y w eather, and for the rem ain in g 14 w all-to-w all blue skies, 24 h o u rs a day. We did m an y activities at n ig h t to take advantage o f slightly firm er snow an d less m eltw ater We began on July 27 w ith an ascent o f C o m m an d m e n t Peak (2,127m , 0527 1400 / 7891 1800) in the Alpine Bowl.
