New Bridge’s Design
Projected Schedule • November 1 _ Contractor’s “Notice to Proceed” • December 1– Demolition & New Construction begins • Fall 2019 – Construction complete • Spring 2020 – Landscape restoration
Phase 1 Work & Maintenance of Traffic • Set up of work site (November 2017) • Removal of roadway median; existing bridge is split into two parallel bridge spans. A temporary barrier is installed between the spans. • Southern span (northbound lanes) is removed. • Traffic is reduced to one lane per direction across Carlin Springs Road bridge • When south span is removed, all traffic on Carlin Springs and George Mason must be rerouted via detours (December 1-3 weekend)
Detours - Used Only During Short Term Closures
Phase 2 Work & Maintenance of Traffic • Construction of new south side bridge section • All traffic (vehicles and pedestrians) is shifted to the north span • When steel beams are installed both roads will be closed for one day (a Saturday, date TBD)
Phase 3 Work & Maintenance of Traffic • Removal of existing north side span • Construction of new north side bridge span • Construction of new sewer line in Carlin Springs Rd and Abingdon Street. • All traffic (vehicles and pedestrians) is shifted onto the new south side span. • When north span is removed, all traffic on Carlin Springs & George Mason Drive must be rerouted via detours (a weekend in early summer 2018), Also closure on one Saturday for steel beams installation. • Abington Street within sewer line construction zone is reduced to one lane (north bound only).
Sewer Line Construction
Phase 4 Work & Maintenance of Traffic • Refurbishment of bridge abutments and wing walls • Completion of permanent sidewalks on new bridge • Vehicular traffic on Carlin Springs Road will be returned to two lanes in each direction across bridge • Full pedestrian travel (both sides of bridge) will be restored after permanent sidewalks are completed
Completion • Removal of construction trailer, temporary signage and building materials • Restoration of site and planting of new landscaping
• No impacts on traffic movement (vehicles or pedestrians)
Expected Community Concerns • Cut-through traffic as a result of short-term lane closures and traffic detours • Potential traffic congestion from lane reductions & detours during construction • Some access restriction on N. Abingdon Street • Pedestrian crossings of N. Carlin Springs Road at N. Wakefield and N. Edison streets • Rerouting or disruptions to Metrobus Route 25 service • Noise & dust from demolition and construction
