RESPECT Overview: One distant selling point of martial arts is the teaching of respect. Children can learn to be respectful through example and experience. They will know the minute they enter your school, that it is different from other places. Have another student or assistant explain how and why you bow when you enter and exit an area, also a formal greeting to the class and any other rituals that your school may observe. Allow them to join in when the class says, “Yes ma’am!” “No Sir” They will learn to be respectful by your instruction and by the example set by others. The students will also take their cue from you. Do you show respect to your staff, the students and parents? Respect is given to those in authority, however it is also reciprocal. If you give it, it will be returned to you in the same manner. No parent says, “I want my child to grow up to be irresponsible and of bad character” Unfortunately, many don’t realize they have to exhibit the traits they would like their child to learn. “Do as I Say, not as I do” Is not a part of the child’s learning process, because they will do as the grownups around them do. This is where your school comes in, it may be the only place the child has the opportunity to witness respect in action. Although children will demonstrate the behaviours they live with, you have the opportunity to make a small change for the betterment of the child’s character.

YES, MA’AM, YES SIR Objective: The student will learn to respond to directions with respect Equipment: Take home sheet Program: The student will respond with yes, Ma’am or yes sir when asked to do something Preparation: Divide students into small groups of 5-6. I fyou have less then 10 students, have one group. Have groups form cirlcles Say: • Today we will work on our respect. What is respect? To treat with honor or nicely. Treating others how you would like to be treated. How do you want to me treated? Disrespect is the opposite of respect. It means to treat someone badly. How might you treat someone badly? Talking back, talking badly behind their back, calling names. Today we will model respect • The activity we will do is called Yes, ma’am, yes, Sir. Each of you will have the chance to be Sir or Ma’am. When it is your turn, you will tell each student in your group one at a time to do something. They will run up to you, bow and answer the yes, Ma’am, Yes, Sir then do what you asked. You might have them do a front kick, 5 push-ups or 6 jumping jacks. But remember, you will be the student and will be required to do what your friend asks. To earn respect, you must treat others how you would like to be treated

MASTER MAY I Objective: The student will learn to say, “ May I, Sir/ma’am” and “Thank you, Ma’am/Sir” Equipment: Take home sheet Program: The student will play a rendition of mother, may i? Saying “Sir/ma’am/Master, may i?” and “Thank you, Ma’am/Sir”. Say: • Are you ready for a fun activity? Yes, Sir/Ma’am! Good. We are going to practice saying yes, sir or ma’am, and Thank you, Ma’am or Sir. Raise your hand if you have ever played Mother, May i. • This activity is like that, only you will say Sir or Ma’am, may i do a front kick or something else we have worked on. I will answer, “Yes, you may,” or “No, you may not” and then suggest something else you may do. You will answer, Thank you, Ma’am or Sir, and do what you asked or were told • After you are successful, you may move forward one step. To be successful though you have to ask correctly, answer and do the activity.

GREETINGS Objective: The student will learn the proper way to greet a new student Equipment: Take home sheet Program: The student will learn the proper way to greet new students and guests to your school and why Say: • Do you remember the first time you came to my class? Were you a little afraid of nervous, because you didn’t know what would happen? It’s that way for everybody. The best way to make our guests and new students feel welcome is to treat them with respect • How should we greet new students? How can we let them know what they should do? Have a student or assistant assigned to the new student to show and explain what is happening. • Well, if you are going to show and explain why and what we do, I need to make sure you know what we do and why. • Because each school and discipline is different, you can tailor this to fit your needs. Explain your greetings, how and when you bow, your creed, and dismissal.

ACTIONS SPECK LOUDER THAN WORDS Objective: The student will learn that sometimes how they act reflects their intentions more then what they say. Equipment: Take home sheet Program: The student will model behaviours with and without the proper tone and gestures Say: • Use a voice that sounds bored, and uninterested posture and mannerisms. Today we are going to have a lot of fun. I know I can hardly wait to begin class. I’m so excited you are all here today, so we can have fun together. I just think I’ll burst with excitement. • What’s wrong? Don’t I look or sound excited? Why not? That is what we will talk about today. There is an old saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” Actions don’t speak! What could that mean? Actions speak louder than words? • Just because we use words, how we say it and look says more than just plain words • We really are going to have fun today. You are going to act out different stories, but using different body language and tones, like I did earlier. • I am going to call two of you up at a time, and tell you what i want you to act out. The first person will do it all wrong, like I did. The second person will do it, so that you will believe it.
