NM STATE MAKES WAVES AGAINST NO. 1 WASHINGTON In the Aggies’ game against No. 1 Washington on March 10, junior Kelsey Horton hit just the second home run Husky ace Taran Alvelo had given up all season, giving NM State a 1-0 advantage. Later in the inning, sophomore catcher Nikki Butler hit another long ball against Alvelo. The 2-0 lead for the Aggies tied Washington’s second largest deficit this season. The previous time the Huskies had trailed was against then-No. 6 Texas A&M. Alvelo had previously given up just one homer all season. UVU BREAKS PROGRAM RECORDS AGAINST SOUTHERN UTAH Utah Valley’s offense exploded in a 14-1 victory over Southern Utah on Feb. 25. The Wolverines tallied 14 hits on their way to scoring 14 runs against the Thunderbirds. UVU scored a school-record 13 first-inning runs, which included sending 18 batters to the plate. The output was the most runs UVU has scored since March 14, 2017, when it defeated Maine, 14-3. The 18 batters in the inning was also single-inning school record. In the recordbreaking inning, the Wolverines recorded 11 total hits, four extra-base hits and a grand from senior Taleigh Williams. SU’S LARKINS, NANCE TEAM UP FOR WIN, SAVE AGAINST HAWAI‘I Seattle U’s Andie Larkins and Carley Nance teamed up for a stellar pitching effort in a 4-2 win over Hawai‘i on Feb. 16. Larkins earned the win after allowing one earned run on four hits, while Nance got the save with three perfect innings to preserve SU’s lead. NMSU’S RODRIGUEZ HAS TWO HITS OFF OU’S PARKER NM State senior Rachel Rodriguez had the team’s only hits in a 2-1 loss to then-No. 1 Oklahoma on Feb. 17. Rodriguez hit a double and a single off Oklahoma ace Paige Parker, who had given up just seven hits over five games at that point in the season. SEATTLE U GETS WIN IN ONE-HITTER The Redhawks tallied just one hit, a double by Madison Cathcart, but defeated Nevada, 2-1 on Feb. 17. Maddy Kristjanson’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning brought in Kaylee Ree for the winning run.

2018 WAC Softball AGGIES EARN FIRST WIN OVER RANKED TEAM SINCE 2015 NM State took down No. 17 Kentucky in the team’s first two games of the season for its first win over a ranked opponent since April 6, 2015, when it beat No. 19 Arizona State, 6-4. NM State also beat the first ranked opponent it faced that season, as it took down No. 18 Nebraska 16-11 on Feb. 6, just the third contest of the season for the Aggies in 2015. UVU HURLER JENSEN TAKES NO-HITTER INTO SIXTH INNING Utah Valley newcomer Addie Jensen took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning against reigning NCAA Tournament team North Dakota State on Feb. 11. Jensen ended up being the tough-luck loser in an epic pitcher’s duel, as she allowed just three hits and no earned runs in 8.1 innings of work against the Bison. She also struck out three and walked just one, and the lone two runs that were scored off of her came in unearned via the international tiebreaker rule. The 8.1-inning outing was Utah Valley’s longest since former Wolverine great Bailey Moore went 7.2 against Kansas City on April 15, 2016. SEATTLE U PLAYS TWO EXTRA-INNING GAMES IN SAME DAY On Feb. 10, Seattle U won two marathon extra-inning outings against CSUN and Central Michigan. Susanne Morris hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to lift Seattle U to a 6-4 win over CSUN. Then, in a nearly four hour, 10-inning contest, the Redhawks rallied past Western Michigan, 11-8. SU came back from a 7-3 deficit to win a game that ended after midnight local time. The 3-2 start is Seattle U’s best opening weekend since 2013. SIERRA SMITH HITS FIRST HOMER IN GCU SOFTBALL STADIUM Grand Canyon junior Sierra Smith hit a grand slam in the second game of a doubleheader against Montana on Feb. 8. It was the first home run in the newly renovated GCU Softball Stadium and gave the Lopes the sweep over the Grizzlies. NM STATE TO HOST 2018 WAC TOURNAMENT NM State will host the 2018 WAC Softball Tournament. All six teams will advance to the double-elimination tournament, which will be held at the NM State Softball Complex May 9-12. This is the fifth time the Aggies have hosted the event, as they did so in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017. GRAND CANYON PICKED TO WIN 2018 WAC TITLE In a preseason vote of the six WAC softball coaches, who could not vote for their own team, Grand Canyon was selected as the preseason favorite to win the title. The Lopes took the top spot with 24 points and four first-place votes, while NM State was just behind in second with 22 points and the other two firstplace votes. Seattle U was selected to finish in third place with 16 points, just ahead of Utah Valley in fourth place with 14 points. Kansas City (8) and CSU Bakersfield (6) round out the poll. PRESEASON ALL-WAC TEAM NM State sophomore first baseman Kelsey Horton was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year and Seattle U junior Andie Larkins was selected as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year in a vote of the league’s six head coaches, who could not vote for their own players. Grand Canyon placed the most players on the Preseason All-WAC team with four, while NM State had three. Joining Horton and Larkins on the Preseason All-WAC Team were Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage, Kendsey Hill, Shea Smith and Sierra Smith of Grand Canyon; Nikki Butler and Rachel Rodriguez of NM State; Lauren Frailey Spendlove and Caragh Morris of Utah Valley; Kelsey Goodwin of Kansas City; Chris Hipa of CSU Bakersfield; and Kaylee Ree of Seattle U. RETURNING ALL-CONFERENCE PLAYERS Of the 13 first team All-WAC players from last year, eight return for the 2018 season, including NM State’s Nikki Butler, Kelsey Horton and Rachel Rodriguez, Grand Canyon’s Kendsey Hill and Sierra Smith, CSU Bakersfield’s Chris Hipa, Seattle U’s Alyson Matriotti and Utah Valley’s Lauren Frailey Spendlove. Eleven of the second team All-WAC selections return for 2018, including three from NM State (Victoria Castro, Fahren Glackin and Kayla Green). Also returning are Grand Canyon’s Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage and Shea Smith, Kansas City’s Kelsey Goodwin and Maegan Rollow, Seattle U’s Madison Cathcart and Andie Larkins, Kaylynn Burt of CSU Bakersfield and Caragh Morris of Utah Valley.
