News:

The 2016-17 Crusader Athletic season kicked off under sunny skies on the NNU Soccer Field on Saturday with the women's soccer team opening the new year by hosting Eastern Oregon in an exhibition contest. The game was part of a busy month for the NNU women, who played three games in Trinidad during a week-long competitive and cultural tour of the Caribbean island earlier this month. While the Crusader women were in action on the pitch in Nampa, Idaho, the NNU men kicked off with a scrimmage on the road, playing at NCAA Division I Gonzaga. Just the start of a busy week of action for NNU's teams, as the Crusaders host "Rivalry Week" with cross-county foe The College of Idaho visiting three times. While all three games will be exhibition contests for NNU, bragging rights and the prestige of saying "We Beat The Yotes!" will be prize enough in these contests for the Crusaders. WOMEN'S SOCCER: The NNU ladies were back on campus in late July, practicing in preparation for the upcoming season and a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Trinidad. The Crusaders left on August 5 for the island nation, played three games overseas, and got to experience the varied culture of the country located just off the coast of Venezuela. NNU returned to the U.S. a week later and began preparation for its home exhibition opener, as the Crusaders hosted Eastern Oregon on Saturday. The Crusader ladies put in a solid performance, dominating play, but could not finish

off any of their 14 shots and settled for a 0-0 draw in the unofficial contest. Daniele Ortiz made 4 saves in one half of action in goal, and Chloe Sholtz added 2 more saves playing the second half in net for the Crusaders. The NNU ladies were back on the field Monday evening, hosting Walla Walla Community College in a scrimmage. ON TAP: The Crusaders get the chance to put on a show for the new students arriving on the Nampa campus as NNU hosts The College of Idaho at 5 pm. on Friday night at the NNU Soccer Field. While the game will be the final exhibition for NNU prior to starting its season in California on Sept. 1, the game also will be for bragging rights against the long-time rival Coyotes. The Crusaders won last year's meeting, 2-0, over The C of I. MEN'S SOCCER: The Crusader men hit the road to face a foe over the weekend, scrimmaging in Spokane, Wash., against NCAA D-I rival Gonzaga, a team that NNU played in an exhibition last fall, also. The game was one of two tune-ups for a Crusader squad that hits the pitch under the direction of a new first-year coach, Joel Delass. Delass takes over for former Crusader player and long-time coach Coe Michaelson who now is the head man at Cal Baptist. ON TAP: Fans will get their first chance to cheer on Delass and his new team this Saturday as NNU hosts the finale of "Rivalry Week," entertaining The College of Idaho at 5:30 pm. That will be the final tune-up for the Crusader men, who start their regular season with a 5-game, non-conference homestand that kicks off against Hawaii Pacific on Sept. 1 at 5:30 pm. VOLLEYBALL: The NNU spikers hit Photo by Paul Grubbs the court for the first time in an exhibiCrusader goalkeeper Ryan Foo makes a diving save during Saturday's scrimmage at Gonzaga. tion on Wednesday night, igniting "Rivalry Week" by hosting The College of Idaho at 7 pm. at the Johnson Sports Center. Crusader head coach Doug English is 3-0 against the Coyotes, but 2 of those 3 wins went a full 5 sets. Expect another battle between these two teams as NNU looks to get its season off to a strong start. ON TAP: Following the rivalry tune-up against The C of I, NNU will get a week to prepare for its season openers before the Crusaders head to Utah for three matches at the Dixie State Tournament. NNU opens the season on Friday, Sept. 2, playing Cal State Monterey Bay in the morning, then faces host Dixie State that night. NNU wraps up the weekend with a Saturday morning contest against Black Hills State. (Continued):

Nuggets: •

• The Crusader volleyball team won the NCAA Division II national statistical championship in blocking for the 2015 season, averaging 2.90 blocks per set as a team. • NNU's 2015 fall teams were represented nationally by a pair of players who earned NCAA Division II All-American honors. Julio Castillo — who now is playing professional soccer in Sweden — and returning volleyball player Madi Farrell each were named honorable mention All-Americans. Last year in team competition with Canyon County rival The College of Idaho, the Crusaders went 5-1 overall, sweeping the Coyotes during the fall sports season.

Updates:

Delass named new men's soccer coach

Their will be a new head man guiding the Crusader men's soccer team for the first time in the program's NCAA history as Joel Delass steps in

to guide NNU. Delass is a former assistant coach from Wheaton College in Illinois, where he also played and earned All-American honors. After a five-year professional career, Delass began coaching as an assistant at Cornerstone (Mich.), then returned to his alma mater where he spent the last four seasons as the top assistant for the NCAA Division III program. Delass enjoyed tremendous success on the sidelines with the Thunder, who went 7217-8 overall in his four seasons with Delass on the coaching staff. Wheaton played in the 2014 NCAA D-III National Championship game with Delass on the sideline. Joel Delass

Steele named new women's basketball coach

The new direction for Crusader women's basketball begins under the guidance of Steve Steele, a veteran assistant coach with ties to the NCAA West Region and experience in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Steele takes over the NNU program after spending the last three years as a top assistant under former Crusader player Julie Heisey (van Beek), the 10-year head women's basketball coach at Seattle Pacific. Prior to three seasons on the bench with GNAC rival SPU, Steele served as an assistant for two years at Concordia Irvine, a member of the NCAA Division II West Region. Along with bringing experience and knowledge of the GNAC with him to NNU, Steele — who also won a high school national championship during a 12-year career on the sidelines at national powerhouse Brea Olinda (Calif.) — will be an outstanding mentor for the Crusaders student-athletes as he earned his Bachelor's degree in Religion from Concordia Irvine, and has a Master's in Coaching and Athletic Administration.
