TOP STORY

The Robert Morris University volleyball team will try for its fifth win in its last seven matches when the Colonials host the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders at 1:30 p.m. Friday during the two-day Robert Morris Invitational. The Colonials will follow that up Friday at 6:30 when they take on Penn, and they conclude the tournament, part of the university’s Homecoming festivities, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Rutgers. The RMU Invitational is the last major college sporting event of any kind to be held at the Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. “The Chuck,” as the Colonials will play forthcoming home matches at the North Athletic Complex prior to the January 2019 opening of the new, state-of-the-art UPMC Events Center. LAST TIME OUT

The Colonials took two out of three matches at the two-day Valley Forge Invitational in Philadelphia last weekend. Robert Morris swept Siena 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-18) on Fri., Sept. 8 before bowing to Navy, 3-0 (25-27, 21-25, 23-25), and edging host La Salle University 3-2 (7-25, 25-17, 29-31, 25-9, 16-14) on Sat., Sept. 9. Freshman middle blocker Emma Granger, in addition to her Valley Forge Invitational All-Tournament Team selection, earned NEC Rookie of the Week honors for her efforts. Granger hit .364 and averaged 2.82 kills and 1.27 blocks over the three matches, also racking up ten service aces in that span. UP NEXT

Robert Morris begins Northeast Conference play by traveling to Loretto, Pennsylvania next Friday to take on Saint Francis University at 7:00 p.m. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

Middle Tennessee (3-8) was swept in its first six matches and lost eight in a row overall before running the table at the Comfort Inn-vitational in Morehead, Kentucky Sept. 8-9. MTSU defeated Troy 3-1 and South Carolina State 3-0 that Friday, then took down Morehead State, 3-1, last Saturday. It was the first time in seven seasons that the Blue Raiders went perfect in a preseason tournament. Penn (3-3) opened its 2017 season by falling to Campbell in the opening match of the George Mason Invitational Sept. 1 before defeating Central Michigan, 3-1, later that day, and taking down the hosts 3-0 Sept. 2. The Quakers, like the Colonials, are coming off a split in the Valley Forge Invitational that began with a Sept. 8 sweep of Siena. Their weekend concluded with a 3-1 loss to Navy Sept. 9 and a 3-2 loss to La Salle Sept. 10. Rutgers (3-6) makes its way to Moon trying to snap a five-match losing streak. Most recently, the Scarlet Knights went winless at the Kangaroo Classic, getting swept by Northern Iowa and host Missouri-Kansas City Sept. 8, then falling to South Dakota 3-1 Sept. 9. Their last win was a 3-0 decision over visiting Siena Aug. 30. ABOUT ROBERT MORRIS

The Colonials were predicted to finish in fifth place in the 2017 NEC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. RMU missed qualifying for its 18th consecutive NEC Tournament by just one game last season. In each of the last 18 seasons the Colonials have posted a winning record in league competition, which stands as the longest such streak of any NEC member, past or present.

BYE-YA, CHUCK! Once again, the Colonials will wave goodbye to the Sewall Center this Homecoming weekend, and while “The Chuck” will be torn down eventually, the legacy they leave in their longtime home venue will never disappear. With a capacity of 3,056, the Charles L. Sewall Center for Leadership has housed the Robert Morris volleyball program since 1985, when it was dedicated and named for the man who served as RMU’s president 1967-1989. The Colonials enter the Robert Morris Invitational with a presumed all-time record of 187-118 (.613) at “The Chuck,” though precise records for the 1985-86 and 1988-90 seasons were not kept. The Sewall Center hosted the Northeast Conference Women’s Volleyball Championships in 1997, 2004 and 2008, with Robert Morris capturing an NEC final berth in ‘04.

FROSH STILL FLOURISHING Emma Granger has been recognized by the NEC each of the first three weeks of the season, as the rookie middle blocker continues to shine as one of the conference’s breakout stars. Against La Salle, the Dalton, Ohio native reached season-highs in digs (6), kills (15), points (21.5) and service aces (5). Granger leads the Colonials in kills per set (2.93) and blocks (42), and she has climbed into a fifth-place tie on the NCAA leaderboard with 23 aces—having just faced national front-runner Alyssa Cianciulli of La Salle (29), interestingly enough. DOUBLING UP Alyson Londot finished with double-digit kills (15) versus the Explorers, one of four Colonials to do so; Mirna Sarjanvoic (15), Maria Alfano (13) and Granger (13) were the others. Furthermore, Londot did it for the seventh time this year, and she added 13 digs for her second double-double of the weekend and fifth of the season. Another member of the Colonials’ voluminous freshman class (see below), Londot has taken the team lead with 123 kills as an outside hitter, averaging 3.43 per set in the month of September. WELCOME FRESHMEN Head coach Dale Starr welcomes eight freshmen to the team in 2017, including Maria Alfano, Caroline Bain, Whitney Brown, Skylar Clements, Emma Granger, Alyson Londot, Mirna Sarjanovic and Erika Wilt. This matches the 2014 squad for the most freshmen on a Dale Starr-coached Colonial team. The previous high was six, back in 2015. HITTING THE SPOT A look at the early-season statistical leaders of the Northeast Conference suggests the impact of that freshman class is already being felt team- and league-wide. Robert Morris’ .195 team hitting percentage is tops in the NEC entering Friday, and the Colonials are holding opponents to a .203 clip, which trails only Central Connecticut’s .145. Individually, Emma Granger, who is averaging an NEC-best (17th in the NCAA) 0.56 aces per set, also ranks third in the conference among qualified players with a .350 hitting average. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED The Colonials will have to find a way to replace the production of four-time All-NEC honoree Arden Fisher. Fisher became just the third RMU player in program history to earn All-NEC honors all four years of her career. Fisher was a second-team honoree her first three years before earning first-team laurels in 2016. She became the first volleyball player in in RMU history to record 1,000-plus career kills (1,246) and 1,500-plus career digs (1,852). Her 598 digs last season ranks second in the individual single-season records. She also finished her career ranked second in career digs and fifth in career kills. A HISTORIC RUN Robert Morris recorded its 18th consecutive winning record in NEC play. By doing so, the Colonials extended the longest such streak of any NEC member, past or present. Over that timespan, RMU has gone 162-42 in conference play: 1999: 9-0 2004: 8-0 2009: 11-5 2014: 12-2 2000: 8-1 2005: 7-1 2010: 13-3 2015: 11-3 2001: 8-1 2006: 5-3 2011: 10-6 2016: 8-6 2002: 9-0 2007: 6-2 2012: 13-3 2003: 8-0 2008: 8-0 2013: 8-6

RMU’s recent success is due in part to a dominant team blocking effort, an area which Starr completely overhauled in his first season with the program. As a result, the Colonials have ranked third or better in the Northeast Conference in team blocking in six of Starr’s seven seasons at the helm. Starr has continued the proud tradition of RMU volleyball. He has guided the Colonials to a 75-29 mark in league play and has defeated every team in the conference at least four times. In 2016 RMU tallied an 8-6 mark in NEC play and finished with a winning conference record for the 18th consecutive season, extending the longest such streak of any NEC member, past or present. Under Starr’s guidance, the Colonials ranked in the top three in the NEC in six categories. Starr led the Colonials to their eighth NEC Tournament title in 2015, the first in six appearances with Starr at the helm. Robert Morris defeated three-time defending NEC champion LIU Brooklyn on its home court in an epic 3-1 comeback after RMU dropped set one. Robert Morris received an automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, where the Colonials fell to Ohio State in the First Round. Robert Morris’ 19 wins in 2015 are the most achieved in a season under Starr.

In 2014, Starr saw his team compile its best conference record (12-2) during his tenure. He led the Colonials to their first NEC Tournament title match since 2010 and had three student-athletes earn All-NEC accolades – a season best under his direction. RMU paced the league in blocks, averaging 2.41 per set and 2.92 in conference matches. The Colonials also finished second in digs, opponent hitting percentage, and hitting percentage. Starr guided the 2013 RMU team to its 15th-consecutive NEC Tournament berth, finishing the conference slate with an 8-6 record. The Colonials led the conference in digs and Starr had a student-athlete make an All-NEC team for the fourth straight season. On Oct. 19, Starr earned his 200th career win with a three-set sweep of St. Francis (Pa.). With a senior-heavy roster in 2012, Starr led the Colonials to their 14thconsecutive NEC Tournament behind the strength of 13 regular-season wins against NEC foes. Despite a slow start in early-season tournaments, Starr led RMU to a thrilling five-set victory over West Virginia, the first victory over a Big-XII team in program history. Two members of Starr’s 2012 squad would earn All-NEC honors for the second consecutive season. Academically, the team won the conference’s Team GPA award for the second-straight academic year, as the mark of 3.65 doubled as the highest mark among all of RMU’s athletic programs. The highlight of the 2011 season under Starr had to be the three-set sweep of crosstown-rival Pittsburgh. The win was the first victory over the Panthers in program history. In his first season with Robert Morris, two of Starr’s student-athletes claimed first team all-conference honors in 2010 and a total of four claimed weekly honors from the NEC. Starr guided his squad to a victory over then six-time defending NEC champion LIU-Brooklyn in the conference tournament semifinals. After eliminating the Blackbirds in a thrilling, five-set match, RMU then competed in its 13th league championship match, extending its own conference record.
