2011 Fibromyalgia: Exploring New Possibilities for Relief By Rue Anne Hass, M.A., CCHt., EFT Master

The medical dictionary defines Fibromyalgia as a neurosensory disorder characterized by widespread muscle pain, joint stiffness, and fatigue. The dictionary also states that exact causes of fibromyalgia are not known. The disorder is believed to be caused by the interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural variables. It is possible to heal from Fibromyalgia, but it is not easy. It requires major life changes. But you are worth walking this road. How can tapping support you? Below are some key points for working effectively with Fibromyalgia using EFT. Please note, when working with a disorder that carries a diagnosis, we recommend you consult your health care physician before starting a new program such as EFT/Meridian Tapping.

COMMON THEMES AMONG FM SUFFERERS Does this describe you? You are allergic to so many things. Everything hurts. Nothing seems to work right. You have had a lot of stress in your life. You have come to believe that you are alone here, and you just have to tough it out. No one seems to understand. Have people told you all your life that you are too sensitive? Have you ever heard, “You take things in too deeply. What is wrong with you?” Do you feel like you are too much and not enough at the same time? Do you feel that connection is more important to you than anything, and sometimes you feel you almost sell your soul for approval? Perhaps part of you is thinking inside: “If I am perfect, maybe they will love me.” I believe that chronic conditions are not “diseases,” so much as they are the evidence of a spiritual dis-order.

2011 I believe that chronic emotional or physical discomfort is our spirit crying. The message of the cry is basically, “Let me expand! I want to express myself fully!” You deserve this. You were born for this. Tapping for fibromyalgia means reaching to the deepest levels of how you think about yourself and what is possible for you in the world. EFT does not “treat” fibromyalgia in the western medical sense, or as a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor would. You are tapping for the pattern of energetic constriction in your bio-electric field that is showing up as your physical discomfort, your feelings, your beliefs, and your self-talk. Each person with Fibromyalgia is different, unique.

ONE THEORY ABOUT HOW FIBROMYALGIA STARTS: We hold worry, fear and anger in place for so long that it can become pain in the body. As children we are told: Don’t get too big for your britches! What makes you so smart! You’re such a big know it all! You can’t cross the street by yourself. Don’t do it that way! or Why are you doing that!?! or I told you not to do that! Live by the rules or you’re grounded. (The rules often didn’t make sense to you.) So we develop beliefs like: I am too sensitive I am afraid of success I am afraid of invoking anger in others I am not enough. I worry about the future I can’t show what I am really feeling — that makes me too vulnerable. Then we grow up telling ourselves a very limited constricted story about who we are, and what happened to us, and what that means about us and what is possible for us… Holding all those feelings in our bodies over time can create illness. Beliefs are just often repeated thoughts. We can change them to thoughts that make us feel good and expansive instead!

2011 WHAT COULD BE AN “UPSIDE” OF HAVING FIBROMYALGIA? Often people use an illness like Fibromyalgia to create a boundary for themselves, when they need to say NO but they don’t feel strong enough to stand up for themselves. Even though it is a difficult condition to live with, in many ways Fibromyalgia keeps them “safe.” People with Fibromyalgia may have developed unconscious beliefs like: “If I heal I wouldn’t be able to… I wouldn’t know how to… • stand up for myself, risk doing what I want to do • grow spiritually • feel safe • do what I want to do • say what I feel • be who I am, justify being alive • ask for help or get attention • feel / know that I am special, worthy • take care of myself without feeling guilty “So—I (unconsciously) believe that I have to have fibromyalgia: • in order to be good to myself • in order to take care of myself • in order to stand up for myself … grow … feel safe... And now, I don’t know who I would be without it.”

WHERE WOULD YOU BEGIN WITH TAPPING FOR FIBROMYALGIA? If we start tapping for fibromyalgia by saying “Even though I have fibromyalgia, I deeply and completely accept myself,” all kinds of inner objections may instantly pop into our minds. That phrase might be a starting point, but only useful at the beginning to uncover all the beliefs and feelings that lie under it. So really, tapping for fibromyalgia means reaching to the deepest levels of how we think about ourselves and what is possible for us in the world. We are not “treating” fibromyalgia in the western medical sense, or as a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor would. We are tapping for the pattern of energetic constriction in our bio-electric field that is showing up as our physical discomfort, our feelings, our beliefs, and our self talk. Each person with fibromyalgia is different, unique. A good place to start is to tap for the pain or discomfort specifically.

www.2011PainReliefSummit.com

2011 WHAT QUESTIONS CAN WE ASK OURSELVES TO GET CLEAR ON WHAT WE SHOULD TAP ON? • What do you feel? • Where specifically do you experience the discomfort? Tops of my thighs, knees (“Even though I have discomfort in …”) • What is the worst part? My knees are weak, I can’t trust them (Even though my knees are weak... Even though I feel like I can’t trust my knees...) • How would you describe it? What is it like? Soreness (“Even though I have soreness in…”) Like an ache: Knees ache (“Even though my knees ache…”) Like my muscles are not toned (“Even though it feels like my muscles are not toned…”) Continue to use each phrase in italics in this way, sometimes as a set up statement beginning with “Even though…” and sometimes as phrases to say while tapping on each point. There is no way to do this “wrong!” You can’t harm yourself. • When do you feel it? What triggers it? When I am stressed and worried • When did it start? Exhausted from exercise Tension in my body A good follow-up to a tapping session like this is to ask ourselves, “If this pain or discomfort or these tears had a voice, what would it be saying?” When we really listen to what our symptoms are saying, they want us to change our lives, and change how we think about and talk about ourselves. Inner balance and harmony follow our thoughts. Tapping can open the door for harmony at all of our energetic levels. But—it requires that we allow our lives to change deeply too. For many people, that is the hard part.

2011 CREATE A TAPPING SET UP FOR GOING DEEPER INTO A SENSE OF WHAT THE PAIN IS SAYING—WHAT IS THE MESSAGE OF THE PAIN? Pain can represent an inner conflict. An inner conflict suggests your deep caring about something— your own intuitive knowing colliding with someone else’s idea of what is best for you. * Creating the set up: 1—Think of the internal conflict between wanting to choose what is right for you, and feeling like you need to make a choice that supports someone else. The two choices feel so tangled that it feels like you “are” the conflict. - One voice is the voice in you that comes from your past, your training in your family, how you had to be to survive, the voice of your “good boy or girl.” - The other voice is your true voice. 2—Think of a recent time when you experienced this conflict between standing up for yourself and sitting down for someone else. 3—Notice where and how you experience the conflict in your body. 4—What are the emotions connected to the conflict? 5—What is the intensity of the body sensations and the emotion 0-10? 6—What is the story that you are telling yourself about toughing it out instead of following your own truth? 7—Give the story a title.

FIRST ROUND OF TAPPING *TAP for needing approval from anyone in this situation Are you listening to your inner voice, your own truth for right now? Or, whom are you listening to? Whose voice? Do you need to be liked by them? … Or need to be understood by them?…. Sensitive people have a deep awareness of and need for connection. We must honor that in ourselves! We can do EFT to detach these needs from people who continue to be unresponsive and only hurt and disappoint us if we try to get our needs for connection met with them. Tap on Side of hand Even though I need this connection – (use your words) - I deeply accept myself….

www.2011PainReliefSummit.com

2011 Even though I need their approval… or I need them to like me… (use your words)…I deeply accept myself… and I honor myself for my need for connection… But even though I feel this need… I’m willing to accept that I can’t make this happen… and if that person is not available, I’m detaching now… choosing to connect with myself… to like myself… to seek my own approval of myself… my connection with myself matters the most… Tapping phrases: I always seem to put others’ needs before mine. My parents had a very conservative, religious, rule-driven, negative approach to child rearing. Growing up, I thought that the only way I could stand up for my self was to fight them – be against them I become as invisible as possible rather than to engaging with others and possibly failing. I desperately needed my mother‘s love and attention; since she was not responsive, my only option for feeling touch and attention and belonging was by being “the bad child / the good child.” (Add your own words) What I needed from them Maybe needing their approval Putting them first It’s as if I am not OK with who I am unless someone else approves of my actions. They always said I was “too sensitive” Needing them to like me It hurts that they won’t give me that I thought I had to be perfect But I can’t make it happen I honor my need for connection And I accept that I can’t make it happen So I am unplugging from them, and plugging into myself instead I am untying, untangling my ties to them, unraveling that unhealthy web I was caught in, connecting to myself instead. I’m connecting with myself… liking myself… approving of myself…. that’s what matters. Check inside — your feelings, body symptoms. What is the intensity of your feelings, and what is the story like now?

2011 SECOND ROUND OF TAPPING (different aspect) * TAP for the energy drain of holding the conflict within you: TAP on Side of Hand While you tap here, think about the conflict that your childhood put you in: coming into this life as you did, strong and smart and outspoken, full of energy. You were born into a family that had restrictions and limitations around self-expression. Someone had taught your parents, and their parents before them, and their parents before them, to tamp down and swallow and stuff their own exuberance and their feelings. Your parents’ intention was to quiet you and disconnect from you because you reminded them in too painful a way of their own squashed true voice. Or maybe they were trying to protect you from the hardships they had faced by “toughening you up.” But you thought there must be something wrong with you. Think of the conflict that that would have set up in you: a huge, identity shaping conflict… Put your attention now on acknowledging that all of that did happen—and it is over now. It is no longer happening. You no longer need to resonate or identify with that look, and that disconnection, and feeling beaten and hurt and confused Even though this conflict has been draining my energy, and I have been disconnecting from myself, I accept the parts of me that have been doing this… And even though I’ve let choosing for someone else instead of myself drain my energy and create negativity, I deeply forgive myself… now that I see it, I can change it…. And even though I have been letting my own energy leak out in my life, now I am choosing to take back my energy…. I am choosing to protect myself… I am saying no to disconnection…I am now choosing and cultivating the connections that enhance my life Tapping phrases: I felt under-appreciated, taken advantage of and unloved, because my definition of love was giving of myself to others and no one was giving to me. I felt inconspicuous, unwanted. I thought what happened was my fault. My voice was always denied. How can I choose, AND keep myself feeling good about my choice? I want to choose what is right for me. My body knows what is right for me. My heart knows what is right for me. I can always change my mind.

2011 Accepting what I can’t change… and changing what I can. This old conflict, letting it go now… I can’t let it go – it has shaped who I am! It is all I know! But that old identity is smothering me, squashing me, choking me. It keeps me from standing up, feeling grounded in my body, knowing what I want! But—I am no longer powerless; I have choice now. This energy drain I can stop putting so much energy into it. This energy drain Now that I see it, I can change it. This energy drain Taking back my energy now. I had thought of standing up for myself only in terms of standing up against someone else. As in, “I have to fight against you in order to be me”. I am a bright, capable, intelligent, creative person and I want to transform this pattern and heal it within. I can remember what it feels like to be the child full of life, energy, strength, strong opinions and excitement. That is who I really am! It is OK to be me. It is really OK to be me! It is not only OK, it is a miracle and a blessing to be me! Check inside. What does your body feel like now? What has happened to the feeling of conflict? Think of the situation you had in mind as you tapped. What is the story that you would tell about it now? In my experience, the highly sensitive temperament underlies the energy patterns and spiritual disharmony that can show up as Fibromyalgia symptoms. So, you might want to end your tapping session with a celebration: Especially because I LOVE THAT I AM SO SENSITIVE … I am deepening and expanding my sensitivity in even more powerful wonderful ways. Especially because I LOVE THAT I AM SO SENSITIVE… I hunger for deep connection with the world, I make creating and maintaining a sacred relationship with myself my first priority. Especially because I LOVE THAT I AM SO SENSITIVE… I have a mission of bringing peace into the world, I intend to be a portal through which loving, helpful energy can flow. Especially because I LOVE THAT I AM SO SENSITIVE…I am standing up for myself, paying attention to what I notice and honoring my sensitivity…. I am expressing who I am with love and a light heart.

She asks: What if our sensitivity can open access for us into deeper senses that go beyond seeing, hearing and touch into a more subtle realm? What if we have been given a gift that we haven’t been receiving? Answering these questions lies at the heart of her work. Her background includes seven years of university teaching, extensive training in psychospiritual philosophy and Energy Psychology therapies, and ordination as a minister by the Lorian Association, a spiritual research center that explores a contemporary spirituality.  Her teaching style is open, welcoming, clear, grounded, intuitive and flexible.  As a presenter she has been described as, “Very natural and easy.
