[email protected] Overview of Presentation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Applying for Financial Aid Updates on Financial Aid UAB Academic Scholarships Notification and Disbursement Timeline Frequently Asked Questions Questions?
1. Applying for Financial Aid
• Complete the FAFSA – the Free Application for Federal Student Aid online at www.fafsa.gov
1. Applying for Financial Aid FAFSA • Takes less than 30 minutes to complete online at www.fafsa.gov • Real-time help is available via phone at 1-800-4FED-AID, or via online chat • UAB priority date for submitting the 2016-17 FAFSA: March 1 • If UAB requests additional documentation, please send ASAP! •
No aid can be awarded until we receive all requested documentation.
• Filing electronically allows use of IRS Data Retrieval Tool
The FAFSA results determine your eligibility for need-based aid!
1. Applying for Financial Aid What Information Do I Need for the FAFSA? • • • • • • • • • • •
Driver’s License Number (for student only) Dates of Birth Social Security Numbers 2015 IRS Tax Return 2015 W-2 Forms Asset Information—including bank statements, business records, mortgage information, etc… Free & Reduced Lunch, Food Stamp, and Welfare information Social Security and Disability Benefits Veteran’s Benefits Additional Income or Benefit Information Documentation of U.S. Permanent Resident or other Eligible Noncitizen information
1. Applying for Financial Aid What About Parent Information? • Students must provide information about their biological or adoptive parents. • If their parents are divorced, provide information for the parent with whom the student lived more during the past 12 months. • If their biological parent is remarried, the student must include the step-parent’s information, even if he/she does not provide any support to the student. • If their biological parents are unmarried, but living in the same household, the student must list both on the FAFSA. • It does not matter who claimed the student on their taxes. The rule is to provide the information for the parent(s) with whom the student lived the most or provided more than 50% of the financial support
1. Applying for Financial Aid Independent or Dependent Student?
• Generally, unless a student is 24 years old, married, is a veteran, or has dependents that he or she provides more than half the support, the student cannot be considered independent
1. Applying for Financial Aid I’ve Submitted My FAFSA – Now What? • Approximately 2 weeks after you submit the FAFSA, Student Aid Reports (SARs) will arrive via email or paper mail. o Review what you reported on the FAFSA and make sure everything is correct. o Supply any supplemental info requested by the UAB Financial Aid Office. (check your UAB email address)
o Sending supplemental information quickly will help avoid delays in determining eligibility for financial aid!
• Official Financial Aid awards will be made by UAB beginning April 1st or within a few days after the FAFSA and any additional requested documentation is received.
1. Applying for Financial Aid Why Does UAB Need More Information? • About 1/3 of applications are selected for a process called “verification” • Students will be asked to provide forms, tax documents and possibly other documents to the school • The school must have this information to determine how much aid the student can receive *Using the IRS Data Retrieval will reduce the chance of being selected for verification
1. Applying for Financial Aid What Types of Aid Can I Qualify For? There are two types of federal financial aid:
• Student-Athletes cannot exceed their cost of attendance
2. Updates on Financial Aid • 2017-18 FAFSA Changes: Prior-Prior Year or Early FAFSA • The change will allow students to report tax information from two years ago • 2015 tax information is used for the 17-18 FAFSA • 2016 information will be used for the 18-19 FAFSA
• This will also allow students and their families to fill out the FAFSA earlier in hopes to have their financial aid packages sooner • 17-18 FAFSA will become available October 1, 2016, rather than January 1, 2017
• How Early FAFSA processing will be implemented at UAB is still TBD but the priority date will likely move to December, rather than March

Frequently Asked Questions • How is cost of attendance (COA) calculated at UAB? • COA is made up of several components including: Tuition & Fees, Room & Board, Books & Supplies, Miscellaneous, Personal, and Transportation • The amounts are based on costs within the area as well as comparisons to other institutions of similar size with urban campuses
• How frequently is COA adjusted? • COA is reviewed each year and is typically increased every 2-3 years when a cost-analysis can justify the increase(s)
Frequently Asked Questions • Why is our COA gap so high? • COA gap may appear high because the COA used for all students includes the Personal and Transportation components. Some institutions include the Personal expenses with the Room & Board component, creating a skewed number for comparison
• How will a scholarship that includes the COA gap be distributed to the student-athlete? • A COA Gap Scholarship could either be awarded as a lump sum at the beginning of the semester or in monthly installments, like the OffCampus Room & Board award

The prohibition against recruiting includes extending verbal or written offers of financial aid to any prospective student-athlete during his or her attendance at the UAB camp or clinic (see Bylaw 13.9.2.2), but does not include recruiting conversations between UAB coaches and PSAs. ACS Tip of the Month Evaluations - Desktop Go to the Recruits Tab and then Compliance Activities. Click New Evaluation. Enter the requested information, including date, time, and type of evaluation. If the evaluation occurred outside of the PSA’s academic year (i.e., summer), make sure to check the box at the bottom. When you are finished click Next. You will be directed to a new page. If there was a host school for the evaluation, you can select the school on this page. If not, click “No Host School, Continue to Next Step.” Selecting a school will automatically add all PSAs connected to that school in ACS to the evaluation. If you selected Visited an Educational Institution in Step 3, you will be required to select a school. You will again be directed to a new page. Here you can select any other schools or teams that participated in the activity. Again, this will automatically add all PSAs connected with that school/team in ACS to the evaluation. When you are finished click “Continue to Next Step.” You are not required to select additional schools/teams. (This step will be eliminated if you selected Visited an Educational Institution in Step 3).

ACS Tip of the Month Evaluations - Desktop (continued) On the next page, you can select individual PSAs whom you evaluated. (This step will be eliminated if you selected Visited an Educational Institution in Step 3). You can do this one of 3 ways: Select PSAs already in your ACS recruiting database Create a new athlete profile directly from this page and automatically add him/her to the evaluation Upload a spreadsheet with all PSAs evaluated. The spreadsheet must contain at minimum first name, last name and grad year for high school PSA, but it may contain additional information, as well. For 2-year college PSAs, you should also include class (2-Year College) and subclass (1st Year, Qualifier; 1st Year Non-Qualifier, or Beyond 1st Year). Using this option will automatically create ACS profiles for any athletes not already in ACS and will map the evaluation to existing athlete profiles if enough data points are the same.
When you have selected all athletes, click “Continue to Next Step.” You will be directed to the final screen. Here you will enter the additional requested information, such as assigned staff members. When you are finished, click “Save & Return.”

OTHER BUSINESS & QUESTIONS? NCAA BYLAW 19.01.5 EXEMPLARY CONDUCT Individuals employed by or associated with member institutions for the administration, the conduct or the coaching of intercollegiate athletics are, in the final analysis, teachers of young people. Their responsibility is an affirmative one, and they must do more than avoid improper conduct or questionable acts. Their own moral values must be so certain and positive that those younger and more pliable will be influenced by a fine example. Much more is expected of them than of the less critically placed citizen.
