2011 Recruiting Class FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Feb. 2, 2011 Football announces 2011 recruiting class Salukis emphasize athleticism, bulks up on defense and adds skill to offense CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois head coach Dale Lennon announced at Wednesday’s press conference that he has brought in 22 players as part of his 2011 recruiting class, 19 of which signed National Letter’s of Intent with the Salukis. As part of his fourth recruiting class at SIU, Lennon signed 11 defensive players, seven players on offense and one kicker while three student-athletes have been offered priority walk-on status. Lennon came away more than pleased in his assessment of the newest group of Salukis. “If you look at a depth chart, right across the board we pretty much hit on what was needed,” Lennon said. “A lot of times in a recruiting class you’re looking two, three years down the road. Some could help us a little sooner than that, but I definitely like the athleticism of this group of recruits.” Searching for athletic, championship caliber players was a primary focus in this recruiting cycle. “We wanted athletic and I think that is what we were able to accomplish,” he said. “You just look at the bios of the players that we signed and all their numbers are impressive. They show tremendous athletic ability and have potential to probably play several positions as far as football is concerned. I really like the mix of players that we have coming in.” SIU is bringing in five players from the state of Illinois and five from Missouri, four of which are from the St. Louis region. In all, SIU had student-athletes from nine different states represented in its 2011 signing class. Championship experience is big with this class. The 19 players that signed NLI’s have combined to win 11 state championships in high school and four were on teams that were runner-up. Highlighting the list from heralded programs is Q’Niko Thomas out of Euless Trinity (Texas) High School and a pair of defensive players out of Hazelwood Central High School in Florissant, Mo. Thomas’ Euless Trinity program won state championships in 2009 and in his freshman year of 2007, when the Trojans achieved a No. 1 national ranking. Thomas played strong safety and outside linebacker at Trinity. Defensive back D.J. Cameron and middle linebacker Cortland Dunlap are the two prospects out of Hazelwood Central. The duo guided the Hawks to Missouri Class 6A championships in 2008 and 2009 and a runner-up finish in 2010. Both players come in highly ranked by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in its Super 30 rankings. Cameron was

2011 Recruiting Class ranked No. 26 and Dunlap was rated No. 12. Dunlap also garnered a No. 15 overall ranking among all players in the state of Missouri by Rivals.com. A big focus of the class was on defense, where the Salukis added five linebackers and four defensive linemen. Kyle Combs, another middle linebacker, comes to SIU after winning three state championships in Arizona. He is one of two products from Arizona, along with outside backer Josh Skadeland. Kevin Reed, a 6-2, 215-pound outside linebacker from Laney (Calif.) College and Blake Mattson (Hartland, Wis.) are the other two linebackers in the class. Up front the Salukis signed four defensive linemen. Calvin Belts (Maplewood, Mo.), Adam Brandt (Stevens Point, Wis.) and Eze Obiora (College of DuPage) are all defensive ends while Kezmond Myles (Bessemer, Ala.) is a nose tackle. Myles attended the same high school as legendary football and baseball star Bo Jackson. Offensively, Lennon signed a pair of quarterbacks, two wide receivers and one tight end. Matt Vincent out of Miramar, Fla. and Matt Lipham from Slidell, La. are the two quarterbacks. Israel Lamprakes, who led Daphne (Ala.) High School to the Class 6A championship as a senior, and Josh Sullivan out of Orlando, Fla. are the two receivers. Adam Fuehne, a 6-7, 232-pound product of Damiansville’s Mater Dei Catholic High School in Illinois, is the one tight end. Up front in the trenches, SIU added four offensive linemen and three of the four are local products. Tanner Crum (Mt. Carmel, Ill.) and Adam Vanderpool (Kansas City, Mo.) both signed NLI’s. Cody Ward (Herrin, Ill.) Tyler Wolz (Marion, Ill.) were offered priority walk-on status. Ward is also a skilled long snapper. After losing the school’s all-time leader in field goals made with the graduation of Kyle Dougherty, Lennon signed kicker Chris Adams out of Ballwin, Mo. Tommy Moore, listed as an athlete, is the final player in the class. Moore, a priority walk-on, is out of Springfield, Ill. There he played both offense and defense at Lanphier High School.
