The annual AP Statistics High School Poster Competition is fast approaching. It will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Chapman University, 2-5pm. This event is jointly hosted by the Orange County/Long Beach and Southern California ASA Chapters. This is a great chance to get to know the AP stats program and see what our talented high school students are doing with Statistics. Chapter members will have a great opportunity to collaborate with high school teachers to encourage next generation learning Statistics. All judges will be treated to light refreshments, plus the added prestige of being a judge and sharing your expertise! All AP Stat teachers will be given lunch and a chance to network and all will have a chance to visit our beautiful Chapman campus and a chance to win a prize.
We need judges! We need AP Stat teachers! We need AP Stat students with their posters! If you are interested in participating as a judge or otherwise helping out with this event, please contact Heidi Gransar at
[email protected]. For AP stat teachers and students, please contact Karen Beatty at

ASA DataFest in Southern California Chapman University and UCLA April 27-29, 2018 By Madeline Bauer, USC (retired), and Harry Hiner, Hiner Partners
Professor Rob Gould started DataFest in 2011 at UCLA with 30 students. This event has become so popular in Southern California that a second SoCal site was hosted at Chapman University for the 2017 ASA DataFest. ASA DataFest is now sponsored by the American Statistical Association and hosted by some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the US, Canada, and Germany. More than 2000 students took part in 2017 (see the map on the next page and https://gallery.shinyapps.io/datafest-map-allyears/). A key feature of ASA DataFest is that it brings together the data science community: Undergraduate students do the work, but they are assisted by roving consultants who are graduate students, faculty, and industry professionals. Many professionals find DataFest to be a great recruiting opportunity–they get to watch talented undergraduate students work under pressure in a team and examine their thinking processes. After two days of intense data wrangling, analysis, and presentation design, each team is allowed a few minutes and no more than two slides to impress a panel of judges. Prizes are given for Best in Show, Best Visualization, and Best Use of External Data.
