Pinewood – The American International School of Thessaloniki, Greece, is an independent, co-educational PreK-12 school offering an enriched American collegepreparatory curriculum and International Baccalaureate Diploma program to students from the local and international communities. The school’s fine arts and information technology programs enhance all areas of instruction and the extensive After-School Activities Program encourages students to participate in a full range of activities outside the classroom. Students are given individualized attention within small class settings. As a whole, the academic program challenges students to develop critical, philosophical and ethical thinking skills. The school, established in 1950, is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges & Schools and has been an IBO World School member since 1999. In addition, Pinewood is a member of the Near/East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (NE/SA) and is sponsored by the Office of Overseas Schools, U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. Pinewood is composed of one legal entity whose official title is Pinewood Schools of Thessaloniki, Inc. Mission Statement Pinewood aims to offer students a progressive, personalized American international education centered on academic excellence in each student’s journey towards self-actualization. This is achieved in a stimulating, multicultural learning environment that emphasizes service, respect for ethical values and awareness of local culture.
Vision Statement Pinewood strives to be a growing center of excellence in the region by educating students through best practices for reaching their full potential as adaptable, global citizens. Legal Status and Incorporation Pinewood was incorporated in Delaware, USA in 1962 as Pinewood Schools of Thessaloniki, Inc. and as a non-profit educational organization. Governance Pinewood operates under a local 9-member Board of Directors composed of appointed community members, the U.S. Consul General in Thessaloniki, elected parents and one faculty representative. Academic Diplomas Awarded Pinewood awards the American High School Diploma upon graduation. This diploma is fully recognized by the United States and the Greek Ministry of Education and is equivalent to those bestowed by Greek public schools. In addition, students who successfully complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program are awarded the IB Diploma by the IBO in Geneva, Switzerland. Faculty and Students The school is composed of 34 faculty members from 9 different countries. Five faculty members hold Doctorate degrees, seven hold Master’s degrees and all hold Bachelor’s degrees. The Director overseas all curriculum coordination in consultation with the Principal, IB Coordiantor and Team Leaders. Currently, the school enrolls approximately 250 students with over 35 nationalities represented in the student body. College Counseling (College Board/CEEB#: 738720) College Counseling at Pinewood is an integral component of each high school student’s education. The process of deciding what to do after high school is a time of great discovery and development. Dr. Giampapa and Mr. Tsachtanis, who assume the roles of College Counselors, design workshops with students throughout the year. Then, in the junior and senior years, students also begin to meet oneon-one to discuss specific future plans. The College Counseling program is highly individualized and it is the students’ responsibility to take advantage of the services that are offered. All students in Grades K-10 take the NWEA MAP (Measure of Academic Progress), an externally designed computer adaptive assessment test in English, Mathematics and Science, each year. All students in Grades 10 and 11 take the College Board PSAT each year in October. Preparation courses are also offered to all students for the SAT I and TOEFL. One-hundred percent of Pinewood’s graduates go on to attend university in the United States, United Kingdom, Englishspeaking universities in other parts of the world and other national universities. Grading System for Grades 6-12 Grading is on a 0-100% scale, with 60% as passing. Students with an overall average of 95% and above in a given quarter earn Director’s Honors and students with an overall average of 90% to 94.4% earn High Honors. Credits and Graduation Requirements In Grades 9 through 12, 0.5 or 1.0 credit is awarded for each course completed with a passing mark of 60% or above. A minimum of 22 credits is required for graduation. Students may transfer credits to/from another school upon the approval of the school administration.
