Science Lectureship
32nd Annual Brossman Foundation and Ronald E. Frisbie Science Lectureship
Millersville University and the Mr. and Mrs. William F. Brossman Charitable Foundation present the 32nd Annual Brossman Foundation and Ronald E. Frisbie Science Lectureship Program. The program includes a competitive examination for high school sophomore and junior science and mathematics students, laboratory demonstrations, a special afternoon lecture for selected elementary and middle-school students, and an evening presentation by Dr. Hazel A. Barton. The University wishes to acknowledge the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Brossman, the late Mrs. Emily B. Sprecher, Class of 1926, and the late Mrs. Anne B. Sweigart, for their support of this program. We also wish to acknowledge Mrs. Bertha Brossman Blair, Class of 1912, the founder of the Brossman Foundation and the trustee board of the Foundation under the guidance of Ephrata National Bank. In addition, we wish to acknowledge Mr. Ronald E. Frisbie Sr. for his long support of the Science Lectureship. Mr. Frisbie, a longtime executive at the Denver & Ephrata Telephone Company, was awarded the Millersville University President’s Medallion in 2012. He has served on the Lectureship Program Committee since its inception in 1985 and serves on the Advancement Advisory Board for the College of Science and Technology. The Lectureship is also supported by the Office of the Provost.

Dr. Hazel A. Barton
Professor, Department of Biology–University of Akron
Dr. Hazel A. Barton is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Akron. Her current research is geared toward understanding microbial interactions and adaptations to nutrient limitation, as experienced by ecosystems in deep subsurface cave environments (see www.cavescience.com). This work has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and U.S. National Park Service. Dr. Barton is also investigating the ecology and evolution of the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the causative agent of the White-nose Syndrome epidemic in bats. This research has been funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Barton Lab has been recognized as one of the ‘top ten most awesome research labs’ by Popular Science magazine. Dr. Barton is also an avid caver, having explored caves on five continents, is a past director of the National Speleological Society (NSS), the Quintana Roo Speleological Survey, and an award-winning cave cartographer. Her cave research has been featured in Sports Illustrated, Forbes, National Geographic Explorer, Outside, Science News, The Scientist, Popular Mechanics, Wired, Geo, and Smithsonian magazines; in the book Extreme Scientists: Exploring Nature’s Mysteries from Perilous Places; on NPR and BBC Radio; on Animal Planet, the History Channel, The Early Show on CBS, BBC TV; and in the IMAX movie Journey into Amazing Caves. Dr. Barton is currently a Fellow of the National Speleological Society, a Kavli Fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, Chair of the Committee on the Status of Women in Microbiology for the American Society for Microbiology, and was the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award.
