SDV 100: Academic Planning    School Counselor(s):   Amodeo, Olinares, Laiti, Patel                          Date(s):   February 18th & 19th, 2016  Grade Level(s):    11th grade students participating in SDV 100  Time Required for Lesson:   45 minutes      ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors Addressed:  Behavior: Learning Strategies   8. Actively engage in challenging coursework  9. Gather evidence and consider multiple perspectives to make informed decisions  Behavior: Self‐Management Skills   1. Demonstrate ability to assume responsibility  8. Demonstrate ability to balance school, home, and community activities  Behavior: Social Skills  8. Demonstrate advocacy skills and ability to assert self, when necessary    Learning Objectives:   Students will:  ‐ Be able to identify the factors that colleges consider in college admission decisions, including the  importance of taking challenging coursework.  ‐ Be able to use their teacher and counselor recommendations, test scores, current academic  progress, interests, and time commitments to make informed decisions about course selections  for the next year.  ‐ Advocate for and make decisions regarding the courses they will take next year.  ‐ Identify how courses they are taking this year and courses they select for next year will enable  them to meet diploma requirements and fulfill their academic and college/career goals.    Materials & Resources Required:  ‐ Copy of “Factors Colleges Consider in Admission Decisions” handout  ‐ Copies of each student’s transcript  ‐ Copies of 4‐year academic plan template    Activity & Procedure:  1. Counselors will inform students about the most important factors in college admission  decisions.    2. Students will analyze their high school transcript with a school counselor to understand their  progress toward meeting diploma requirements to determine what required courses they must  take next year.  3. Students will then assess their interests, academic progress, and time commitments to  determine the level of challenge they would like to pursue in each course and which elective  courses they would like to take.    4. Students will then work with a school counselor to revise their 4‐year academic plan (it is  developed when they enroll and revised each year).     

Dominion High School  Office of School Counseling  21326 Augusta Drive  Sterling, VA 20164   Evaluation:  Process Data:     26 11th grade students participated in this lesson of SDV 100.    Perception Data:  Through discussion and checks for understanding, students will demonstrate that they can identify at  least the top three factors in college admission decisions and the importance of thoughtful course  selection.      Outcome Data:  Students will leave this lesson with a complete 4‐year academic plan and an initial selection of courses  for next year.   Given that this lesson aims to help students reflect on their academic plan, we will also  gather data related to academic achievement as evidenced through grades and selection of rigorous  coursework as evidenced through course requests.
