Our Current Unit of Study: The artist who painted a blue horse We just started a unit inspired by Eric Carle’s book The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse. It is a simple picture book that Carle created as an homage to Franz Marc. We will explore how artists influence each other, like how Marc’s blue horses inspired Carle to create his colorful animals. We will also discuss how every artist is unique because we all have our own interests and preferences. This unit will culminate in the creation of painted paper collage animals in the style of Eric Carle. For the past two weeks we’ve been focused on making a piece of art that conveys our personal preferences: what we like to draw, what materials we prefer to use, what colors we like.

We learned a lot about each other and our artistic preferences making these mixed-media pieces.

It looks like we’re standing in front of one of our masterpieces in an art gallery!

Essential Questions In every unit, there are some big questions we’ll explore while looking at and making art. Here are the questions we’re pondering during this unit: 

Why do artists break from established traditions?

How is a personal preference different from an evaluation?

Learning Objectives Here are the things I want students to know and be able to do in this unit:  

   

I can recognize and name warm and cool colors I can recognize and describe visual textures I can mix and use paint responsibly I can conserve paper I can use art vocabulary to express preferences about artwork I can talk to others about the choices I made when creating art

Looking Forward We’ll be working on this unit through the end of January and into February. Starting this week, we’ll be switching our focus to paint mixing and creating visual texture. We’ll apply this knowledge when creating paper for use in collage.
