JOSH WOODRUM • QB • R-Junior Liberty • Roanoke, Va.

JACOB HAGEN • FS • R-Senior Presbyterian College • Greenville, S.C.

Woodrum recorded 355 yards of offense and was responsible for three touchdowns in leading the Flames past No. 25 Bryant, 38-21. He was 24-of-34 passing ( =70.6 percent) for 319 yards and a touchdown, in addition to rushing for 36 yards and two scores -- including a career-long 30-yard touchdown run. Woodrum connected with eight different receivers and directed Liberty to 498 yards of offense against a Bryant team that entered the contest allowing 10.3 points and 268 yards per game.

Hagen recorded eight tackles (six solo, two assisted), an interception, one pass break-up and forced a fumble in leading Liberty’s defensive effort against Bryant. His interception occurred in the red zone to end the Bulldogs’ first drive of the game and the turnover resulted in the Flames’ first points of the night. Hagen caused a fumble in Liberty territory during the third quarter, which LU recovered and converted into a touchdown on the ensuing drive. He later broke up a pass on fourth down to give Liberty the ball back with less than five minutes remaining.

DARIUS HAMMOND • RS • Sophomore Charleston Southern • Johnson, S.C.

JEFFREY PEGUES • LB • Freshman Gardner-Webb • Charlotte, N.C.

Hammond set a CSU record with a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter of the Bucs’ 20-18 win over The Citadel. He weaved his way through coverage and broke two tackles to give Charleston Southern a 17-3 lead in the third quarter. Hammond added a 39-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter to flip the field after a Citadel TD cut the CSU lead to two. Hammond finished with 119 return yards on his four kick returns Saturday (three punt, one kickoff).

Pegues recorded four tackles and two sacks in helping Gardner-Webb to a 43-36 win over Wofford Saturday night. He made his second career start at WILL linebacker, one of four first-year linebackers who found themselves in the regular rotation due to injuries. Pegues recorded his first career sack on 3rdand-9 at the Wofford 27 to force a punt with GWU clinging to a 29-28 lead midway through the third quarter. He stepped up again in the fourth quarter with a sack.

ANOTHER LEAGUE FIRST -- THREE BIG SOUTH TEAMS RANKED For the first time in Big South history, the Conference has three nationally-ranked programs in the same week, as the FCS Coaches poll has Coastal Carolina at No. 3, Liberty at No. 23 and Charleston Southern at No. 25 this week. It is the third time in League annals that three different members have been nationally-ranked in the same season. BIG SOUTH’S STREAK WITH NATIONALLY-RANKED PROGRAM CONTINUES The Big South has had a football squad ranked for 41 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 campaign (Oct. 24). The Conference has had a Top 5 team in eight of the last 13 rankings. Coastal Carolina is ranked No. 3 in this week’s FCS Coaches poll and No. 3 in The Sports Network ranking -- tied for the highest spot in Big South and school history, as the Chanticleers were No. 3 for three-straight weeks in 2013 (Oct. 21-Nov. 4) in the FCS Coaches poll. It is CCU’s and the League’s highest position in The Sports Network poll. The Liberty Flames are ranked No. 22 in The Sports Network poll and No. 23 in the FCS Coaches ranking, the second consecutive week the Flames are ranked in the Top 25. It is Liberty’s first appearance in the Top 25 since 2011. Liberty’s return gives the Big South two nationally-ranked teams in the same week for the third time in four seasons. In fact, the Big South has had two teams ranked in 14 of the last 21 weeks. Charleston Southern returns to the Top 25, as the Buccaneers are No. 25 in the FCS Coaches poll. CSU was No. 22/24 in the final 2013 polls and was ranked the final nine weeks last year. BIG SOUTH HAS TWO 4-0 TEAMS FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern each are 4-0 -- the second time in Big South football history that two teams opened the season 4-0 in the same year (the same two teams accomplished the feat the first time in 2013). In fact, the Big South is currently the only FCS Conference with two 4-0 teams. The Chanticleers are 4-0 for the second time in school history, while the Buccaneers are 4-0 for the third time in program annals. DAILY DOUBLE The Big South is 12-2 through 14 games against FCS opponents, one year after opening 12-3 vs. FCS foes through the first four weeks of the 2013 campaign. Last season, the Big South set a Conference record with a 16-9 regular-season mark against FCS competition (18-10 including postseason). This year, the Big South has scored five victories over the MEAC, four over the SoCon, two over the NEC and one vs. the Pioneer. The Big South will face the CAA, MVFC, Patriot and the SoCon this coming Saturday. FLAMES WIN BIG SOUTH’S MOST RECENT CLASH OF THE TITANS Liberty defeated No. 25 Bryant this past Saturday, 38-21, to improve the Big South to 7-8 all-time in games involving a ranked Big South member against a ranked non-conference opponent -- including 4-4 during the regular-season. Five of the eight losses have been by seven points-or-less.

PROTECTING THEIR HOUSE The Big South is undefeated at home thus far at 13-0. Coastal Carolina has the League’s longest active home win streak at 10, tied for the fourth-longest home win streak in Big South history. It is the Chanticleers’ longest home win streak since winning 12 consecutive home games from Sept. 11, 2004 - Nov. 12, 2005. Liberty’s home win streak now stands at five, followed by Charleston Southern (4), Gardner-Webb (4), Presbyterian (2) and Monmouth (2). HENDERSON HOPPING TOWARDS HISTORY Coastal Carolina RB DE’ANGELO HENDERSON has rushed for 498 yards through the Chanticleers’ first four games, matching the school record for most rushing yards through Coastal’s first four contests of a season that was established by AUNDRES PERKINS in the program’s inaugural season of 2003. Henderson’s total is more than former All-American teammate and current Baltimore Raven LORENZO TALIAFERRO, who had 486 yards after four games in 2013 en route to a school-record 1,729. Below is a chart featuring Henderson, Taliaferro and Big South single-season rushing record holder MIGUEL MAYSONET after four and five weeks. Thru Game 4 5

CAN’T FUMBLE THIS NOTE Big South football members have already returned five fumbles for touchdowns this year, setting the Big South single-season record for most fumble return scores. The previous record was four in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2011. A record four different teams -- Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina (2), Liberty and Presbyterian -- have the fumble return TDs this season. The previous best was three.

50-50 PROPOSITION Liberty placekicker JOHN LUNSFORD kicked a Big South-record 57-yard field goal this past Saturday against Bryant. The distance surpassed the previous long of 53 yards, which was first set by VMI’s MATT SHARPE in 2003 and tied by Keydet kicker BARRETT WAY in 2004. Lunsford converted his fourth career field goal from 50+ yards, tied for the most in Big South history with Flames’ kicker MATT BEVINS (2008-11). HE CRAN CATCH Gardner-Webb TE SETH CRANFILL is four receptions away from becoming the Big South’s all-time receptions leader among tight ends. He has 62 career catches, second only to former Coastal Carolina TE DAVID DURAN, who caught 65 passes during his career from 2009-12. Cranfill’s 620 career receiving yards are third-most among tight ends in League history, and his two touchdown catches against Wofford this past Saturday tied the Big South single-game record for TD receptions by a tight end. HAMMING IT UP Charleston Southern’s DARIUS HAMMOND returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown this past Saturday vs. The Citadel. It is the first punt return TD by a Buccaneer since CHARLES JAMES did it against Wesley College on Oct. 1, 2011. Hammond’s 74-yard return is the longest in school history and is tied for ninth-longest in Big South history. BLOUNT FORCE Gardner-Webb RB JUANNE BLOUNT needs 47 rushing yards to move into the Big South’s all-time Top 10. He enters this week with 2,309 career yards (most among active players) and 12th in League history, behind Coastal Carolina’s AUNDRES PERKINS (11th - 2,343) and Stony Brook’s EDWIN GOWINS (10th - 2,355). Blount is looking to become the only GWU player among the Conference’s Top 10 alltime rushers. QUADRUPLE FOR QUINN Coastal Carolina LB and Buck Buchanan Award candidate QUINN BACKUS has already forced four fumbles this season, tied for second-most in a season in League history. The record is five, established by Gardner-Webb’s MARIO WILLIAMS in 2003 and tied by Coastal Carolina’s D.J. RICE in 2007. Backus has a CCU-record seven career forced fumbles, tied with Liberty’s MANNY ROJAS (2003-06) for second-most in the Conference record book. That record is eight by Williams and Gardner-Webb’s BRIAN JOHNSTON (2004-07). HIGH RATE OF RETURN Coastal is 19-1 in its last 20 games when rushing for more than 200 yards, including 3-0 this season. The Chanticleers have rushed for more than 200 yards 64 times in their history, and are 59-5 ( =92.2) when reaching 200 rushing yards. Carolina has rushed for 200-plus yards in 21 of Head Coach JOE MOGLIA’s 32 games as CCU’s head coach, posting an 20-1 record in such games. POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 101, while the second-longest active streak belongs to Coastal Carolina (35). Meanwhile, Liberty is the Big South’s active leader for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 45, tied for the longest streak in Big South history. The Flames set the initial record from Sept. 23, 2006 – Sept. 18, 2010. INSIDE THE TACKLE BOX Coastal Carolina senior LB QUINN BACKUS is the active leading tackler in FCS with 352 career stops, which ranks fourth in League history. He is 48 away from becoming just the second player in Big South annals with 400. Meanwhile, Presbyterian College’s DONELLE WILLIAMS is tied for 26th with 234. On the cusp of joining the Big South’s 200-tackle club are Liberty’s NICK SIGMON (199) and Charleston Southern’s DEMARIS FREEMAN (198). SOLO ARTIST Coastal Carolina senior LB QUINN BACKUS is third all-time in Big South history with 191 career solo tackles, and needs five to move past Charleston Southern’s JADA ROSS for second-place. Ross had 195 solo hits from 2004-07. Backus needs nine solo stops to break the Big South career record of 199 that is held by former Presbyterian DB and current Arizona Cardinal JUSTIN BETHEL (2008-11). CAKE ROSS Coastal Carolina QB ALEX ROSS recorded back-to-back games with 300 yards of offense in Weeks 1 and 2, becoming the first Chanticleer signal-caller with back-to-back 300 offensive yard games since ARAMIS HILLARY in 2012 (309 vs. North Carolina A&T on Sept. 1 and 303 at Furman on Sept. 8). Ross is now tied for fourth all-time in Big South history for most games with 300 total offensive yards at seven. Meanwhile, Ross is eighth in League annals for most rushing yards by a quarerback with 827. He is 33 away from moving past former teammate QB ARAMIS HILLARY (859) for seventh-place. Ross is 173 rushing yards away from becoming the seventh Big South quarterback with 1,000 career rushing yards.

BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL TO DEBUT ON AMERICAN SPORTS NETWORK THIS SATURDAY The Big South Conference will make its season debut on the new American Sports Network (ASN) this Saturday, as the first telecast is the Elon at Coastal Carolina game live at 7:00pm. EVAN LEPLER (playby-play) and NATE ROSS (analyst) will call the action from Conway. Big South football will appear on ASN six times in 2014 -- five of them between Conference members, on affiliates and stations owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group. The six broadcasts push the League’s overall package to a Big Southrecord 14 this season (12 League games). In addition, the final five weeks of the 2014 regular-season will now feature two televised games each week. BANG THE DRUM Liberty QB JOSH WOODRUM has recorded back-to-back games with 300 yards of offense for the second time in his career. He notched 340 yards against Brevard in Week 3 and 355 this past Saturday vs. Bryant. Last season, Woodrum had 304 and 396 yards in consecutive outings. He now has five career games with 300+ yards of total offense, which ranks eighth all-time in Big South history. His 5,825 total yards are eighth-most as well. WOODWORKING Liberty QB JOSH WOODRUM has rushed for a touchdown and passed for a score in the same game six times in his career, and the Flames are 4-2 in such contests -- winning the last four. Meanwhile, Woodrum is tied for ninth in League history with 36 career touchdown passes and is 10th with 5,590 career passing yards. BEATTY OR NOT, HERE HE COMES Gardner-Webb QB LUCAS BEATTY became the eighth player in Big South history with 6,000 career passing yards when he eclipsed the milestone this past Saturday vs. Wofford. He currently ranks sixth all-time with 6,152, and needs 209 passing yards to move into fifth-place. Beatty already ranks in the Conference’s career Top 5 with 556 completions (4th) and 911 pass attempts (4th). He is on pace to become the second Big South quarterback with 600 career completions. Meanwhile, Beatty is among the League’s all-time leaders in total offense for plays (8th - 1,072) and yardage (7th - 5,859). HE’S GOT THE WILL Presbyterian College redshirt-junior LB DONELLE WILLIAMS recorded his 10th career 10-tackle game in Week 1 with 12 stops at Northern Illinois. Williams, who has played 29 career games, has averaged 8.07 tackles per game in his career -- one of 11 players in Big South history to average 8.00 tackles per game. Coastal Carolina LB QUINN BACKUS owns a per game average of 8.38 (352 in 42) -- the ninthhighest average in the record books. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!! Charleston Southern and Presbyterian College both added lights to their football stadiums during the offseason. CSU won its first-ever home night game in Week 1 and finished 4-0 in its home night games this season. PC was victorious in its two night games at Bailey Memorial Stadium this year. The Blue Hose played under the lights at home for the first time since Oct. 27, 1990 against Wingate at Old Bailey Stadium. PC lost that game, 33-22. BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL FIRST -- UNDEFEATED WEEK The Big South Conference went 6-0 during Week 3, the first time in League history that every Conference member won its respective non-conference match-up in the same week. Four of the wins were against FCS foes -- the same total in Week 3 of the 2013 season. Five Big South members were above .500 after three games -- another League first. PRESBYTERIAN KNOCKS OFF NATIONALLY-RANKED FURMAN The Presbyterian College Blue Hose defeated No. 12/12 Furman, 10-7, in Week 3 for their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2008 when PC downed No. 17 Liberty. Furman is now the highest-ranked team that PC has defeated at the Division I level. Presbyterian’s win over the Paladins marked the second-straight season the Big South has recorded a regular-season victory over a nationally-ranked non-conference FCS opponent, and the sixth different season overall in the Big South’s 13-year football history. FANNING THE FLAMES Liberty set a Big South single-game record for yards per play with its 16.03 average against Brevard in Week 3. The Flames gained 625 yards on just 39 offensive plays, smashing the previous record of 10.66 (Stony Brook vs. Pace - Sept. 8, 2012). Liberty averaged 12.96 yards per rush (23 for 298) against the Tornados, breaking the League single-game mark of 11.79 yards per carry that was established by Coastal Carolina in 2006 at VMI (28 for 330).

He is averaging 5.4 yards per carry, and his three rushing TDs are tied with Liberty’s JOSH WOODRUM and Charleston Southern’s AUSTIN BROWN for the most among the signal-callers. Maxwell has rushed for a touchdown in three consecutive games, the longest streak for a Big South QB since MALCOLM DIXON accomplished the feat for Charleston Southern in three-straight from Oct. 27-Nov. 10, 2012. BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL RETURNS TO ESPN3 IN 2014 The Big South Conference will televise eight football games exclusively on ESPN3 this season. The “Game of the Week” package includes a non-conference broadcast for the second time and begins Oct. 4 when Gardner-Webb hosts Charlotte. The first League game on E3 will be Oct. 11 with the Coastal Carolina at Presbyterian College contest. The eight games will again utilize instant replay with assistance from DVSport. CALL HIM MR. FUMBLEROOSKIE Liberty’s JACOB HAGEN returned a fumble 27 yards for a touchdown at North Carolina in Week 1 -- his second career fumble return TD. He is now the first player in Big South history to return two fumbles for scores. Hagen’s first career fumble return TD was a 44-yard return vs. Stony Brook in 2012. RETURN TO SENDER Coastal Carolina’s DEVIN BROWN returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown at North Carolina A&T in Week 2, tied for the second-longest kickoff return in League history. It was Brown’s second career kickoff return TD, and he is now one of seven players in the Big South record books with multiple kickoff return touchdowns. The record for most career kickoff return TDs is three, held by Liberty’s DOMINIC BOLDEN (2005-08), Charleston Southern’s GERALD STEVENSON (2007-10) and Liberty’s KEVIN FOGG (2009-13). ELIMINATING THE MIDDLE MAN Charleston Southern LB GABE MIDDLEBROOK returned a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown in the Buccaneers’ Week 1 win over Point. It is the fourth-longest fumble return in Big South history, and the longest in the League since Presbyterian’s BRANDON LESTON had a 91-yard fumble return against Georgia Tech in 2012. Middlebrook’s fumble return is the longest by a CSU player during the Big South’s football era (since 2002). The previous longest was a 77-yard fumble return for a TD by JADA ROSS against Gardner-Webb in 2007. ROSS, COOK ON INITIAL WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST For the second time in Big South history, two players opened the season as official candidates for the Walter Payton Award, as Coastal Carolina QB ALEX ROSS and Gardner-Webb WR KENNY COOK are among the initial 20 candidates for the top individual award in FCS. In 2011, Liberty QB MIKE BROWN and Flames’ WR CHRIS SUMMERS opened the campaign among the initial candidates. RECORD THREE PLAYERS ON BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD WATCH LIST A record three Big South players are among the initial 20 candidates for the Buck Buchanan Award, which honors the top defensive player in FCS. Coastal Carolina LB QUINN BACKUS, who finished seventh in the voting last year, headlines the Big South’s trio. Joining him are Gardner-Webb DL O.J. MAU and Liberty DB JACOB HAGEN. The Big South is tied with the Big Sky Conference for the most Buchanan Award candidates. TWO-POINT CONVERSION The Big South Conference is one of two FCS Conferences (Big Sky) to have two teams -- Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb -- with both a Walter Payton and Buck Buchanan Award candidate. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS ONE Coastal Carolina and Liberty will meet in the season-finale for the first time, as their Nov. 22 match-up in Conway will mark their 12th meeting. Coastal leads the series, 6-5, and the winner of the matchup has won or shared the Big South football Championship nine times. The Chanticleers won threestraight over Liberty from 2004-06 en route to three consecutive titles (two outright, one shared). The Flames were victorious from 2007-09 while winning three-straight Big South crowns (two outright, one shared). Coastal won last season’s meeting and both teams shared the title in 2013, as well as 2010 and 2012. GOOD WORK YOUNG MEN For the first time in Big South history, two football players have been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, as Charleston Southern’s CHRISTIAN REYES and Liberty’s JONATHAN BURGESS are among the 182 candidates from every subdivision and classification. The Big South has had one honoree named to the team -- Charleston Southern’s JORDAN LANCASTER in 2010.
