ARAMIS HILLARY • QB • Senior Coastal Carolina • North Augusta, S.C.
QUINN BACKUS • LB • Sophomore Coastal Carolina • Greenwood, S.C.
Hillary was 30-of-47 passing for 356 yards and three touchdowns at Toledo, setting school records for completions and attempts in a game, and throwing for the third-highest passing total in Coastal history. He led the Chants to four touchdown drives against the Rockets and did not throw an interception in recording a 148.52 pass efficiency rating. Hillary was 12-of-16 for 153 yards and a touchdown in the first half, and rallied the Chants from a 17-7 deficit to a 21-17 lead early in the second half. He also converted three third down pass plays during three of Coastal’s four TD drives -two of which were touchdown strikes.
Backus tallied a team-high 13 tackles at Toledo, with nine solo stops, a forced fumble and fumble recovery. With Coastal down 10 points midway through the fourth quarter, Backus stripped Toledo’s Cassius McDowell and recovered the fumble, and five plays later the Chanticleers scored a touchdown to get to within three points.
JOHN LUNSFORD • K • Freshman Liberty • Fort Myers, Fla.
TAMYN GARRICK • QB • R-Freshman Presbyterian College • Williston, S.C.
Lunsford scored a career-high eight points against Lehigh, making both field goal attempts (32 and 40 yards) and both point-after-touchdown kicks. In addition, he booted all five of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks to minimize Lehigh’s starting field possession.
Garrick enjoyed a career day against Furman, as he was 20-of-32 passing ( =62.5 percent) for 270 yards and a touchdown. He rallied PC from a 24-0 halftime deficit with three scoring drives, as he was 13-of-19 for 184 yards and his TD pass in the second half.

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET, who became the fourth player in Big South history with 3,000 career rushing yards when he eclipsed the milestone in Week 3, is now third all-time in League annals with 3,341 rushing yards. He needs 69 yards to move into second and 293 to break the Conference career record of 3,633 set by Liberty’s RASHAD JENNINGS from 2006-08. Here is a look at the Big South’s 3,000-yard rushers: RK 1. 2. 3. 4.

MORE ON MAYSONET Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET has rushed for 580 yards in the first four games of the season, establishing a Big South record. The previous standard was 542, first set by Liberty RB RASHAD JENNINGS in 2006 and matched by Maysonet last season. With 145.0 rushing yards per game, Maysonet is pacing ahead of his Big South single-season record of 136.4 rushing yards per game that Jennings set in 2008. Meanwhile, Maysonet is the first Big South player with two rushes of at least 70 yards in the same season, as he had an 84-yard rush in the season opener vs. Central Connecticut State and added a 71-yard scamper in Week 3 at Syracuse. Maysonet is now the third player in Big South history with three rushes of 70 yards or longer, joining Coastal Carolina’s MIKE TOLBERT and Gardner-Webb’s DAVID MONTGOMERY. BUCS SNAP TWO LOSING STREAKS Charleston Southern’s 23-20 win at Shorter this past Saturday ended the Buccaneers’ 15-game overall losing streak as well as their 13-game road losing skid. It was CSU’s first win since Nov. 13, 2010 vs. Presbyterian and its first road victory since winning at PC on Nov. 7, 2009. THE HILLS ARE ALIVE Coastal Carolina QB ARAMIS HILLARY established school records with 30 completions and 47 pass attempts this past Saturday at Toledo. He totaled a career-high 356 passing yards against the Rockets, the third-highest total in CCU history and most since ZACH MacDOWELL had 382 against Liberty on Nov. 13, 2010. Hillary is averaging 23.3 completions, 34.8 attempts and 281.3 passing yards per game, and is on pace to break the Big South single-season record of 223 completions (projected 256) and 360 attempts (projected 383). Hillary is on pace to throw for 3,099 yards, which would be the secondhighest single-season total in Big South history. SEAWOLVES EXTEND HOME WIN STREAK TO NINE Stony Brook has won nine consecutive home games, a streak that began Sept. 24 of last year. It is the sixth-longest home win streak in Big South history. During their streak, the Seawolves are averaging 45.1 points (including six 40-point games) while holding their visitors to an average of 18.2 points. The Big South record for longest home winning streak is 12 games. PASSING GRADES Stony Brook QB KYLE ESSINGTON has thrown a touchdown pass in eight consecutive games, while Coastal Carolina QB ARAMIS HILLARY has a six-game TD pass streak. Essington’s streak includes tying the Big South record for consecutive games with at least two touchdown passes (six), and has 17 TD throws in his streak. Hillary has totaled 13 touchdown passes in his current string. MEN WITH A PURPOSE Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET amassed 298 all-purpose yards this past Saturday at Colgate, the sixth-highest single-game total in Big South history. Maysonet gained 198 on the ground and another 100 on kickoff returns to push his career total at SBU to 3,720 and into seventh-place on the Big South’s career list. Meanwhile, Presbyterian’s MICHAEL RUFF needs 98 yards to become the 12th player in League history with 3,000 in a career. POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 78, having broken the old mark of 67 last season. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb has not been shutout in its last 48 games, followed by Stony Brook (44) and VMI (24). HUBBA BUBBA Gardner-Webb kickoff returner J.J. HUBBARD had a 69-yard kickoff return this past Saturday at Pittsburgh, two weeks after recording a 73-yarder against Richmond. Hubbard’s career long is a 79-yard kickoff return, which he did last season for a touchdown at VMI on Nov. 19.

30 FOR 30 The Big South has had three different quarterbacks complete at least 30 passes in a game this season, the most times in the Conference since four quarterbacks combined to do it six times in the 2008 campaign. FIRE STARTERS Liberty teammates ALDREAKIS ALLEN (125) and SIRCHAUNCEY HOLLOWAY (107) rushed for 100 yards against Lehigh this past Saturday, the first time that two Liberty backs gained 100 rushing yards in the same game since Sept. 29, 2007 when ZACH TERRELL (115) and RASHAD JENNINGS (101) accomplished the feat. It was the 11th time Liberty had two 100-yard rushers in the same game since 2002. SCORE-FOR-MORE PROMOTION Stony Brook RB MIGUEL MAYSONET became the fifth non-kicker in Big South history to score 200 points in a career when he surpassed the milestone in Week 2. He is now 10th in League annals with 222 points. His 37 career touchdowns rank fifth in Big South history, and he needs one to tie VMI’s TIM MAYPRAY (2006-09) for fourth all-time at 38. Maysonet needs to reach the end zone three more times to become the fourth player in League history with 40 career touchdowns. Meanwhile, Maysonet’s 33 career rushing TDs are third-most in Big South history. TOUGH SCHEDULE After opening the season at FBS member Wake Forest, Liberty played three consecutive nationallyranked opponents. It was the third time a Conference member played back-to-back-to-back games against nationally-ranked foes, as Gardner-Webb did so in both 2005 and 2006. Liberty played three nationally-ranked opponents in 2011, its most as Big South members, and could play a fourth if Stony Brook remains in the rankings when the two teams meet on Nov. 10. The Big South single-season record for most games played against nationally-ranked programs is four (seven times, last by VMI in 2011). THIS NOTE IS SURE TO FIRE UP SOMEONE Liberty has suffered three of its four losses by seven points-or-less with a combined 12 points in those contests. The Flames haven’t had this many close calls since the 2006 campaign when Liberty had four losses by seven points-or-less. ANTICIPATION Gardner-Webb DB KAMAR MORRISON returned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown this past Saturday at Pittsburgh, the seventh-longest fumble return in Big South history. Morrison’s score at Heinz Field was the first fumble return TD for a Runnin’ Bulldog since BILLY LUTHER returned one 35 yards for a score against VMI on Oct. 28, 2006. DASH AND MASH -- THE NEXT GENERATION Stony Brook rushing tandem MIGUEL MAYSONET (580) and MARCUS COKER (283) have combined for 863 rushing yards and 11 rushing TDs already this season, and the Seawolves are 3-0 when the duo score a rushing touchdown in the same game. Last season, Maysonet and BROCK JACKOLSKI had 885 rushing yards and six scores after four games. BYRD WATCHING Presbyterian College RB LANCE BYRD, who became the 12th player in Big South football history with 2,000 career rushing yards when he surpassed the milestone in Week 1, is currently 12th all-time in League annals with 2,195, and needs 20 rushing yards to move past former Coastal Carolina RB PATRICK HALL (2,214 from 2003-05) for 11th. HAZEL EYES Coastal Carolina WR MATT HAZEL saw his touchdown reception streak end at five games as he did not reach the end zone this past Saturday at Toledo. His streak is tied for third-longest in Big South history with former VMI standout TIM MAYPRAY. JAMES THE XI Charleston Southern DB CHARLES JAMES recorded his 11th career interception in Week 3 at Illinois, tied for third in League history and matching the school record set by PHILLIP ASHLEY from 2006-08. For James, it was his fourth career INT against an FBS opponent. He had two picks at Hawai’i in 2010 and one interception at Florida State last season. James has 20 career pass break-ups (ninth all-time) and is seventh in Conference annals with 31 passes defended. His 143 INT return yards are fifth-most in the Big South record books.

POLL POSITION Stony Brook is ranked No. 18 this week in both the FCS Coaches poll and The Sports Network national ranking. It is the first time that a Big South member has been ranked in BOTH polls each of the first five weeks of the regular-season (including preseason). The last time a Big South program was nationally-ranked in the fifth week of the season was Liberty in 2010 (No. 25 by The Sports Network). LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP Stony Brook QB KYLE ESSINGTON and WR KEVIN NORRELL have connected on three touchdown pass plays of at least 60 yards this season. In Week 1, it was an 89-yard touchdown pass against Central Connecticut State -- the second-longest pass play in Big South history. In Week 2, it was an 86-yard scoring strike against Pace -- the fourth-longest pass play in Conference annals. In Week 3, the duo hooked up for a 63-yard TD strike at Syracuse. Essington and Norrell are the first quarterback-receiver combination with two 80-yard pass plays in the League’s record books, while Norrell is the first Big South player with two 80-yard catches. Essington is the fourth Big South signal-caller with two 80-yard completions. KING OF THE HILL Coastal Carolina QB ARAMIS HILLARY, who became the ninth quarterback in Big South history with 10 career rushing touchdowns in Week 1, remains ninth all-time with 11 and needs two more rushing scores to tie former Chanticleer QB TYLER THIGPEN for eighth. Coastal Carolina is 9-1 in games when Hillary scores a rushing touchdown (2-0 this season), and in games when Hillary rushes for a touchdown and throws a TD pass, the Chanticleers are 6-1 (also 2-0 this season). CALL HIM PRESSURE PEMASA Gardner-Webb junior DL PRESTON PEMASA, who became the 10th player in Big South history with 30 career tackles-for-loss in Week 1, is eighth all-time with 32.0 and needs a half TFL to tie former Charleston Southern linebacker JADA ROSS for seventh at 32.5. DOUBLE DOWN Liberty is the Big South’s active leader for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 22, the fifth-longest streak in Big South history. The Flames took over the top spot after Stony Brook’s streak of 28 consecutive games was snapped last season on Sept. 3 at Buffalo, as the Seawolves managed just a touchdown against the Bulls. PURE ESSENCE Stony Brook QB KYLE ESSINGTON has thrown a touchdown pass 25 percent of the time this season, as he has tallied seven TD strikes on his 28 completions in 2012. Essington now has 27 career touchdown passes, one shy of moving into the Big South’s all-time Top 10. He is three shy of becoming the ninth Big South quarterback with 30 career TD passes. HE’S JUST PAT Liberty WR PAT KELLY surpassed 100 career receptions at Montana in Week 3, becoming the 22nd player in Big South history to reach the milestone. He had 14 catches against the Grizzlies -- tied for second-most in a single-game in League annals. Kelly now has 116 career catches, tied with former teammate B.J. HAYES for 16th all-time in the Conference record books. STONY BROOK’S MIGUEL MAYSONET ON PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST For the sixth time since 2006, the Big South Conference has an official candidate for the top offensive individual honor in FCS. Stony Brook RB and reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Year MIGUEL MAYSONET is among the 20 initial candidates for the 2012 Walter Payton Award. Maysonet is just the second Big South running back to make the list, joining former Liberty rusher and current Jacksonville Jaguar RASHAD JENNINGS, who finished 8th in the voting in 2008. DURAN DURAN Coastal Carolina TE DAVID DURAN became the first tight end in Big South history with 60 career receptions when he reached the benchmark in Week 1. His two catches against North Carolina A&T broke the Conference tight end career record of 59 that was set by Gardner-Webb’s JOSH MILLER from 2007-10. Duran is already the Conference’s all-time leader for receiving yards by a tight end with 823. THREE’S COMPANY Coastal Carolina DB DONTAVAIS JOHNSON had three interceptions in the season opener against North Carolina A&T, the seventh player in Big South history with this trifecta and first since Charleston Southern’s CHARLES JAMES had three picks at Liberty on Oct. 9, 2010. Johnson is the third Coastal player with three INTs in one game, joining MARRIO NORMAN (Oct. 20, 2007 vs. Presbyterian) and JOSH NORMAN (Nov. 7, 2009 vs. Gardner-Webb).

SKIFF & WESSON Stony Brook kicker WESLEY SKIFFINGTON set a Big South single-game record with 11 PATs made and attempted in the Seawolves’ 77-7 win over Pace in Week 2. His 145 career point-after-touchdown kicks are second in Big South history, while his 253 career points are third on the League’s all-time kick scoring chart. WAS THAT A NINER I JUST HEARD? Gardner-Webb TE SETH CRANFILL had nine receptions against Samford in Week 3, establishing a Big South single-game record for most catches by a tight end. BIG SOUTH’S TV PACKAGE IS ITS LARGEST EVER, NEW “GAME OF THE WEEK” ON ESPN3 The Big South Conference will have its largest football TV package ever in 2012, as a League-record 27 games will be televised this season. Overall, the Big South will appear on television every week of the season for the first time in the League’s 11-year football history, and will also have a “Game of the Week” carried on ESPN3 during all seven weeks of the Conference season for the first time. The Big South’s Conference TV slate features seven games on ESPN3 and an additional two on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN). I LOVE THE 80s Stony Brook accomplished a Big South first against Central Connecticut State in Week 1, as the Seawolves had two 80-yard plays in the same game. The first was an 89-yard touchdown reception by KEVIN NORRELL. The second occurred on SBU’s next drive, an 84-yard touchdown run by MIGUEL MAYSONET. Norrell’s reception is the second-longest pass play in Big South history (the record is 90 yards), while Maysonet’s scamper is the second-longest rush from scrimmage in the Conference record books (that record is 86 yards). MASTRO OF THE UNIVERSE Coastal Carolina junior NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO is the Big South’s career leader for punt returns with 51, having become the all-time leader as a sophomore. The previous career mark was 43, set by Liberty’s WYNTON JACKSON (2003-07). Mastromatteo is third in League annals with 390 career punt return yards, 135 yards away from Jackson’s Big South mark of 525. Meanwhile, Mastromatteo is third in Big South history with 98 combined kick returns in his career (47 KR, 51 PR), and two away from becoming the third player with 100 combined kickoff/punt returns. BEATTY ON IT Gardner-Webb QB LUCAS BEATTY threw for a career-high 320 yards against Samford in Week 3, becoming the first GWU signal-caller with 300 passing yards in a game since STAN DOOLITTLE had 301 at VMI on Oct. 3, 2009 and the most since DEVIN CAMPBELL had 338 against Coastal Carolina on Nov. 8, 2008. Beatty’s 30 completions against the Bulldogs are the most for a Gardner-Webb QB since Doolittle had 32 in the VMI game in ‘09. WOODWORKING Liberty QB JOSH WOODRUM threw for a career-high 322 yards at Montana in Week 3 while completing 34 passes -- tied for third-most in a single-game in Conference history and the most in a game since Presbyterian College QB BRANDON MILEY had 34 at Gardner-Webb on Oct. 18, 2008. Woodrum’s 322 passing yards against the Grizzlies were the most by a Flames’ QB against a non-Conference opponent since MIKE BROWN had 338 passing yards against St. Francis (Pa.) in the 2010 season opener. HE ALMOST WENT ALL THE WAY At Georgia Tech in Week 2, Presbyterian College freshman DB BRANDON LESTON returned a fumble 91 yards for the Blue Hose, the second-longest fumble return in Big South history. The Conference record is a 99-yard return for a score set by Liberty’s RANDALL STATE at Akron on Oct. 12, 2002.
