Two Good Farms CSA September 12, 2016 This week’s share continues the transition from summer to fall. You will still find summer favorites such as peppers and ground cherries, but it is the cooler weather, fall crops that are really starting to assert themselves. You will find a bag of fresh broccoli raab/mizuna mix, as well as hearty roots such as beets, radishes, potatoes, and carrots this week. Weather permitting, we will be transplanting spinach in a few days so it is only a matter of time before that quintessential cool/cold season green makes its way into your box. One of the great things about farming organically is that it affords us the ability to share our farm with many different forms of life. By forgoing pesticides, we don’t have to worry about destroying the many benign and even beneficial insects that would make their homes among our veggies. For example, our pepper greenhouse has developed a booming population of these lovely creatures, the common garden spider (Argiope aurantia). They can grow up to two inches long and while they will probably never be accepted by arachnophobes, they are not aggressive and will only bite if severely provoked, producing a reaction similar to a bee sting. They love the heat of the greenhouse, as well as protection from destructive winds and rain. And they keep down the mosquitoes that can make harvesting a real pain. Also, we would like to extend an invitation to our annual CSA party/potluck, this Sunday, September 18, starting at 3:00. We will supply a meat based and a vegetarian main course, but please bring a dish to share. If you would like to come, How to contact us just RSVP so we know how many to expect! Email:
