MONTHLY NEWS & EVENTS AT NEW COMMUNITY CHURCH

The Value of the Body

Tim Handyside // Elder over Small Groups I dare you to find it? I dare you to find one place in Scripture where we are commanded to meet in small groups. While you may find some functional examples of it, you won’t find it commanded anywhere in Scripture. If that is the case, how come we have a whole ministry built around it? Why do we encourage it within our membership class and from the pulpit? Why do so many within our body participate? Here are a few brief reasons why we are so passionate about small groups here at NCC: 1) It provides a means of sanctification. The Stop by Christian race was never meant to be a solo ncc-stl.org/small-groups voyage. Instead, Scripture employs us to “stir up to find a Small Group one another on to love and good works” and to near you! “encourage one another and build each other up”. C.J. Mahaney put it this way: “Small groups provide the encouragement, correction and accountability that keep us from drifting. As important as it is to cultivate a personal relationship with God... We need others to help us in our pursuit of sanctification.” 2) It provides a means of strength. Galatians 6:2 commands us to “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” The spiritual life is no picnic and there are times when the burdens of life weigh us down. It is in those times that we need others within the body of Christ to surround us and to help us shoulder that burden. Small groups provide the context for which that can happen. 3) It provides an outlet for service. There is no way that all the gifts that exist within this body of believers can be exercised on a Sunday morning. Small groups offer a place where you can and practical outlets to serve one another and to use the gift(s) God has given you. There are many more reasons why small groups are vital to the health of our church, but hopefully these give you some encouragement to get involved in one if you aren’t already. Be sure to look on our website for a small group near you and get plugged in. If you have any further questions, I’d be happy to discuss them with you. Book of the Month

Side by Side: Walking with Others in Wisdom and Love

Jerry Marshall PASTOR-TEACHER Jeremiah Kirberg PASTOR OF ADMINISTRATION

Edward T. Welch

Everyone needs help from time to time, especially in the midst of painful circumstances and difficult trials. In this short book, a highly respected biblical counselor and successful author offers practical guidance for all Christians—pastors and laypeople alike—who want to develop their “helping skills” when it comes to walking alongside hurting people. Written out of the conviction that friends are the best helpers, this accessible introduction to biblical counseling will equip believers to share their burdens with one another through gentle words of wisdom and kind acts of love.
