What’s The Good News?

Lot’s of  things are being set  in motion with the Area‐wide  project.  As we head into the  fall 2008 season,  most sites  for research have been  determined and plans are  underway to get fall  treatments lined out.  It’s a  good thing to be getting the  Area‐wide project out on the  ground.  The Education/  Products team is underway  as well, with initial projects  started and a planned first  conference call on Oct. 23— 9:00 am PST.    As the Area‐wide project  keeps gaining steam,  I hope

that this newsletter evolves  from a ‘keep everyone  updated’  to a newsletter that  has practical and useable  information for managing   annual invasive  grasses.

wish to contribute, please  let  me know.  If I don’t hear from  you, you may be hearing from  me for that ever important  content.

I am thinking that  some regular  columns should  start appearing  which address  actual field  applications of  EBIPM and user  friendly advice—kind of like a  Meditate on Medusahead— coffee shop visit .  If you have  Park Valley, UT.   suggestions for columns or

Area-wide Project -What’s the Good News?

Website Update: Under Construction The Area‐wide project is now  on the internet.  A tremendous  amount of work is still needed  to get us to a functioning,  useful site.  If you have a few  minutes, we would appreciate  you taking a look and giving  input on what you think would  make the site more helpful.   We  also need copy for the  website.  We need a medusa‐ head and cheat grass  description page.  If someone  would like to take this on for  us, please let me know.

Alex Boehm has put together  some maps for the Area‐wide  project and we are hoping to  make that interactive to each  watershed.  Along those lines,  we would like each water‐ shed to submit details about  the specific goings on in that  watershed.  I will be sending  out a template soon for the  watershed coordinators to fill  in for this part of the website.

should be listed on the  website let us know as we  want to keep everyone  updated on the happenings.    Check out the site at  www.ebipm.org and offer  your input to make this a  great site.

The other request I have is, if  you know of any events that

Area-wide Working Conference Plans are underway to hold a  working conference in March  2009 to bring together  everyone involved in the Area ‐wide Project.  Currently, the  plan is to hold the conference  over 2 days in Reno, NV.

our understandings of the  good work going on through‐ out the Great Basin as part of  the Area‐wide Project.   This  working conference should  give us ample opportunity to  do long term planning for the  project as well.  As we go  As we draft an agenda we  forward with the project  hope to have presentations  from each of the watersheds.   having well defined strategic  plans will enhance our  This should enhance all  of

successes not only each season  but particularly in the long  term sustainability of the  project.  We will try to get the  days set soon so that you can  put them on your calendar.    Looking forward to seeing you  in Reno.

Getting the Word Out After the last conference call,  we are realizing that many of  you are getting the word out  about the Area‐wide Project.   Please let us know how we  can help.  Do you need  brochures?  Would a table  top display be helpful?  We  would like to be helpful in

providing you with materials  as you are out and about to  meetings, workshops, field  days  wherever you might be  talking about the Area‐wide  Project.  All these venues  provide us the opportunity to  increase our audience and  awareness for the project.

We will, within the next  month, be submitting   popular press articles to  various publications to begin  a general awareness  campaign.

The ‘What’s the Good News?’ is a product of the 'Area-wide Project' an USDA-Agricultural Research Service grant

bringing together land managers and researchers to manage invasive annual grasses through the adoption of EBIPM on threatened or dominated ecosystems within the Great Basin region of the western U.S.
