Sermon Discussion Questions Gentle Defense – 1st Peter 3:13-17 – April 22nd, 2018 1. Reflect on a time when you weren’t as winsome as Christ calls us to be. What did you learn from that experience? What would you do differently, if you could? 2. How would you define winsomeness? 3. Peter assumes that Christians will operate as “exiles” in this world. To what extent do you feel your life is one of exile? To what extent do you not experience the tension of being an exile? 4. Miroslav Volf writes, “Christian difference is therefore not an insertion of something new into the old from outside, but a bursting out of the new precisely within the proper space of the old.” If he is correct, what might that difference look like? 5. Do the words “gentleness” and “respect” characterize the way you interact with non-Christians? 6. Are your interactions with non-Christians one way in person, and another way online? 7. Who or what comes to mind when you hear the phrase, “repugnant cultural other”?
8. Do you agree with Pastor Joey when he says that we are called to a “soft difference”? Why or why not? 9. How would you define “soft difference”? 10. What’s the distinction between a soft difference and a weak difference? 11. Pastor Joey gave three application ideas. Which spoke most to your situation? 12. What would Faith Church look like if we primarily defined ourselves as those “born again into a living hope,” and didn’t define ourselves in opposition to those we are against?
