Start here! Good morning! Today, I’m going to share a story about a woman who got into a lot of trouble. She did something really wrong, so wrong that people wanted to throw rocks at her! Can you imagine that? Wow! They brought her to Jesus, and - to everyone’s surprise Jesus loved her and forgave her. He then told her to repent of her sins. That’s interesting, isn’t it? Jesus didn’t tell her to quit sinning so that he could forgive her. He loved and forgave her so that she could start a new and better life. That’s what I’m going to talk about today.

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO THE SERMON TIME Here is a quick rundown of our plan for the sermon time this morning. Think of it as some inside information. Follow along with me! I am so excited that you’re here with us! 1. The Prayer for Illumination The prayer before the sermon is called the “Prayer for Illumination.” What does that mean? Great question! It means that we’re going to ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate (a big word meaning something like “shine light on”) the meaning of the Bible so that we can understand it. God is going to help us understand and apply His Word. 2. The Bible Reading After the Prayer for Illumination, I will read from the Bible. Now remember: the Bible isn’t my word. Our passage isn’t even just the words of the person who wrote it. Ultimately, it is God’s Word! The Holy Spirit inspired them to write our passage this morning. That is awesome! 3. The Sermon God engages, equips, and entrusts certain individuals to become preachers in the Church. We call these guys pastors. They prayerfully prepare a sermon each week. And as they faithfully proclaim the truth, God speaks through them to the Church. 4. The Pastoral Prayer After the sermon is over, I will pray for you, for our church family, for our community, our country, and our world. We’ll pray for God’s grace to transform everything for his glory.

OUR BIBLE READING John 7:53-8:11 (ESV) 53 They went each to his own house, 8:1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” Artwork (C) 2016, Drew Pocza. Used with permission. www.pocza.com

SERMON NOTES

YOUR ARTWORK

When you do something wrong, how do you feel? Do you worry that others might not forgive you or that you might get a big punishment? If so, you understand a little bit about the woman in our story.

Below, draw a picture from the sermon. Maybe you could even show your artwork to me sometime! I’d love to see it!

How does Jesus respond to the woman caught doing something wrong? How does God respond to you when you sin? How should you respond to others, when they do
