Objectives:

Develop and use proper soccer technique to pass the ball

HINTS:

Enforce structured drink breaks. Players at all levels often have difficulty monitoring their intake of fluids. Activity 1- “3-2-1 DRILLS”

Warmups:

Duration: 10 MIN

Hold a quick team meeting to welcome players to practice and tell them the focus tonight will be on passing the ball. Have players dribble around the field. On your call, “3-2-1,” players must stop and place their dominate foot on top of the ball. Have players do 10 toe-taps and then dribble away. Do a series of repetitions with each. Add pull-backs, cuts, and turns as players grow more comfortable. Passing Into A Square

COACHING DEMONSTRATION Have players line up at well spaced cones on one of the sidelines and show players how to position the body to pass the ball. Coaching points should include: using the inside of the foot to push pass the ball in the desired direction, keeping the plant foot beside the ball, and hips pointed toward the target. Begin by having players push pass the ball without the ball (ghost pass). Repeat several times. Then have players pass you a ball one at a time as you move down the line. Offer praise and reinforce the good habits you are observing. Activity 2- PASSING INTO THE SQUARE

Duration: 8 MIN

Players are divided into groups of two. Build several small squares (2 yards x 2 yards) with a cone at each corner. One player attempts to push pass the ball so that it lands within the square. The other partner returns the ball. Players switch roles after five passes. Players may keep a tally of how many times they successfully land their ball inside the square. Repeat a time or two and shuffle partners. Continue to offer praise and celebrate good passing skills. Teach players that the strength of their passes matter in soccer. Activity 3- CANNON BALL RUN

Duration: 8 MIN

“Pirates” must dribble across the “deck of a ship” without being tagged by “cannon balls” (balls) as they dribble by. The “Captain” (Coach) commands the dribblers down and back in an orderly fashion. One cannon baller is selected to push pass the ball out onto the deck to tag pirates. Pirates who are tagged become cannon ballers. The game ends when there is one pirate left. Repeat a time or two. Continue to offer praise and celebrate good dribbling, cutting, turning, and passing skills. REPEAT COACHING DEMONSTRATION Use this to check for players’ understanding, to measure growth and to target players who may need additional help. Activity 4- SMALL SIDED GAME 4 v 4

(Keep the focus on tonight’s objectives!)

Duration: 20 MIN

End practice with a short team meeting to review the session objectives and highlight the good things seen and observed.
