COACHES VOTE WEST FLORIDA PRESEASON FAVORITE
Birmingham, Ala. — As the Gulf South Conference Women’s Soccer season approaches, two things are for sure, West Florida will be looking to repeat as GSC Tournament Champions and will enter the season as the preseason favorite. Both Lee and Mississippi College will be better acclimated to the league as they will soon be full-fledged members in 2015-16 and 2016-17, respectively. LU had an impressive first season in the GSC finishing second with a 14-4-2 record, including 8-1-1 in the conference. Both Shorter and Union have completed the process for NCAA DII and will join the GSC ranks. West Florida fell just short in winning back-to-back NCAA DII National Championships last year. Over the past two seasons, West Florida has claimed two GSC Regular Season Championships, two GSC Tournament Championships and one Division II National Championship. A new head coach joins the GSC ranks in Rebecca Nolin. She steps in to fill the void vacated by former head coach, Mel Heinz. Nolin brings both coaching and collegiate and professional playing experience to the staff and will look to bring VSU back to form. The 2014 Preseason All-GSC Team featured 11-total players this year. Leading the charge were both West Florida and West Alabama, with three student-athletes each. Kelly Andres, Taylor Harbison and 2013 GSC Freshman of the Year Sara Helgadottir represented UWF, while UWA saw 2013 Co-GSC Player of the Year Nicki Gears (37 points: 15 goals, seven assists), Katy Morris and Lydia Sutcliffe. Both Deysla Reyes and goalkeeper Olivia Mills garnered spots for Valdosta State, while Alabama Huntsville, Christian Brothers and North Alabama all had one player each. Khadijah Jannah, who lead UAH in goals (10) and points (23) in 2012, but did not play in 2013, made the team, while Camilla Rodrigues (CBU) and Chloe Richards (UNA) rounded out the list of honorees.
2014 GSC WOMEN’S SOCCER PRESEASON COACHES’ POLL West Florida was again dubbed the top choice as the No. 1 team (81 points) by the coaches entering this season. Valdosta State comes in with 67 points (one first-place vote, four second-place votes, two third-place votes and two fourth-place votes) to once again claim the second spot. Christian Brothers falls into the three-spot, just a point shy of a tie with VSU, while West Alabama (54 points) claimed fourth. Rounding out the Top 5 was North Alabama, with 50 points. Union was picked to finish sixth, followed by Alabama Huntsville, West Georgia, Shorter and Delta State, in that order, respectively.
