HOOPER

sauvignon blanc semillon Smith & Hooper craft premium wines within a philosophy naturally expressed by the unique terroir of the region. The ancient geologies and moderate climate have transformed the noble Bordeaux varieties of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon into wines of finesse and distinction, with seamless flavours, exceptional palate weight and length. Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of Terra Rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance.

viticulture/winemaking

Both the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are grown on the deeper, loam and clay soils of our Hooper Vineyard on a two tier canopy system. The more fertile soils encourage vigorous growth creating cool shade for the fruit which preserves the intense grassy flavours of these varieties.

Our Wrattonbully vineyard plantings of Sauvignon Blanc are extensive, with a block of consistently good quality Semillon. This bounty allows choice to target the style for Smith & Hooper Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. Fermentation was initiated as separate wines, then a fifth of the blend was co-fermented in old French oak. After blending, around half of the blend spent 9 months in barrel with yeast contact and fortnightly stirring giving an excellent textural component.

vintage conditions

Vintage 2012 in Wrattonbully was very pleasing, with fruit quality being exceptional across all varieties. Mild temperatures were the greatest influence in Wrattonbully during this season, budburst was early across the majority of varieties and the mild temperatures continued into the New Year allowing the white grapes to retain their natural acidity.

winemaker’s comments

The wine’s aromas are intense with tropical notes of guava, passion fruit and paw paw. This is given complexity by roasted nuts and nougat. The palate offers a burst of flavour opening deliciously with grapefruit moving to a stone fruit and citrus compote. There is middle palate textural richness reminiscent of baked lemon curd tart. The wine finishes long and refreshing. Enjoy with light summer meals; try with a char-grilled octopus salad.
