HOOPER

sauvignon blanc semillon Smith & Hooper craft premium wines within a philosophy naturally expressed by the unique terroir of the region. The ancient geologies and moderate climate have transformed the noble Bordeaux varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon into wines of finesse and distinction, with seamless flavours and length. Wrattonbully is one of Australia’s most exciting viticultural discoveries of recent times. Blessed with the celebrated soil profile of Terra Rossa over limestone, the region is rapidly establishing a high class reputation for wines of depth and elegance.

viticulture/winemaking

Our Wrattonbully vineyard plantings of Sauvignon Blanc are extensive, which allows a wide choice in targeting the style for Smith & Hooper Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. There is a single block of Semillon and it is a consistent quality fruit producer. Both the Sauvignon Blanc and the Semillon are grown on the deeper, loam and clay soils of our Hooper’s Vineyard. The more fertile soils encourage vigorous growth creating cool shaded fruit that preserves the intense grassy flavours of these varieties. vintage 2013 region  wrattonbully winemaker peter gambetta harvested 20th to 27th february 2013 alc/vol 12.0% total acid 6.1 g/L ph 3.30 vegan & vegetarian friendly

The Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were blended as juice and cofermented in old French oak. The finished wine spent 11 months in barrel and fortnightly lees mixing has given an excellent textural component.

vintage conditions

The lead up to vintage 2013 was perfect for Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Good crops set during the mild conditions of the flowering period, and the summer months were warm and mild. Occasional rains gave the vines a great start and allowed them to access sub soil moisture into summer. There were no prolonged heat spikes in Wrattonbully and these conditions, together with skilful vineyard management, produced grapes of outstanding quality, concentrated flavour and high natural acidity.

winemaker’s comments

Smith & Hooper Sauvignon Blanc Semillon has intense fruit aromas of lime zest and poached pear, given complexity by flint characters from yeast lees contact and barrel maturation overlaid with a preserved lemon salt tang. The wine tastes scintillatingly fresh; opening with a citrus compote then moving to middle palate textural richness reminiscent of a baked lemon curd tart and an alluring dash of white pepper. The wine has presence throughout the palate with a long and refreshing finish.
