Teachers,  Students  and Parents  Display  Their  Talents and  Share  Their  Stories  at  2nd Annual  "Believe  With  Me" Gala   Nearly  500  supporters,  students, parents  and  teachers  joined  us  for the  Partnership's  second  annual  Believe  With  Me  Gala  in  downtown LA,  to  witness  the  amazing  work  and  talents  of  Partnership students  and  teachers.  VIEW  GALLERY Our  students  and  families  took  center  stage  at  the  gala  with their  emotional  and  passionate  stories  of  overcoming  the  odds.  99th St  3rd  grader  Brillana  Boyd  inspired  a  standing  ovation  with  her original  poem,  "Believe"  and  there  wasn't  a  dry  eye  in  the  room after  Huerta  Elementary  parent,  Leticia  Calderon,  spoke  about  how the  Partnership's  Parent  College  gave  her  a  renewed  focus  on  her children's  education.  READ  MORE

New  Boards  To  Advise  the  Partnership   As  we  strengthen  and  grow  our  model,  fostering  involvement  from our  network  is  crucial  to  the  Partnership's  future  and  longevity.  We are  developing  three  advisory  boards  to  ensure  we  have  strong

edSurge  Tech  for  Schools Summit Educators  and  edtech organizations  meet  for  two  days on  the  USC  campus  to  have honest,  open  conversations about  edtech  challenges  and opportunities.  MORE NGSS  and  Common  Core  in California  schools The  California  Science Teachers  Association  is  holding a  conference  on  Dec.  6  focused on  shifting  instruction  through practices:  NGSS  and  Common Core  in  California  schools.  The options  include  a  web  seminar or  face-­to  face  summer institute.  MORE 55thAnnual  Mathematics Conference   The  California  Mathematics Council  is  hosting  its  55 th  Annual  Mathematics

stakeholder  voice  to  drive  a  broader dialogue  on  the  direction  of  the Partnership. The  advisory  boards  are  comprised of  crucial  groups:  teachers,  parents and  students  from  across  our network  of  schools.  Board  members will  advise  the  Partnership  on  a  range  of  issues  including refinement  of  mission,  goals,  and  core  values;;  ways  to  bring  our schools  together  and  integrate  effective  practices  across  our network;;  and  coordination  with  LAUSD  as  a  means  of  improving service  to  our  schools,  among  other  responsibilities.  Stay  tuned throughout  the  school  year  for  updates  by  our  advisory  board representatives  at  your  school.  READ  MORE

Community  Unites  to  Makeover Markham  Middle  School   Nearly  100  volunteers  from  Creative Artists  Agency  and  the  Watts community  came  together  at  the Markham  Middle  School  campus  last month  to  makeover  the  campus.  Students,  staff,  volunteers  and community  members  revamped  the  campus,  covering  the  school  in a  lively  color  scheme,  creating  inspirational  murals  across  the campus  and  improving  landscaping.  Volunteers  enjoyed  lunch provided  by  a  fleet  of  food  trucks  while  families  enjoyed  various kid's  activities,  including  a  party  jumper.     Special  thanks  to  State  Assembly  candidate  Prophet  Walker for  gathering  support  from  The  California  Endowment,  The California  Wellness  Foundation,  B.  Wayne  Hughes  Jr.,  the  Harold Robinson  Foundation,  TOMS  Shoes,  HACLA  and  Markham Summer  Camp  and  all  of  the  event  sponsors  who  made  the  day possible!    VIEW  GALLERY

Culture  and  Climate  Corner:   Restorative  Justice  at  Three Partnership  Schools By  Tanya  Franklin With  the  generous  support  of  The California  Endowment  and  the technical  assistance  of  the  California Conference  for  Equality  and  Justice, Roosevelt  High,  Markham  Middle and  Gompers  Middle  Schools  each  received  a  Restorative  Justice coordinator  to  develop  and  implement  restorative  practices  this  past school  year. As  a  result,  suspensions  have  been  reduced  by  65%  at  Markham and  85%  at  Gompers.    In  addition,  the  out-­of-­classroom  discipline referrals  have  decreased  by  29%  and  41%  (Markham  and Gompers,  respectively).    At  Roosevelt,  the  disproportionate suspension  rate  for  students  with  disabilities  has  decreased  by  34% and  the  Restorative  Justice  Task  Force  is  a  new  collaborative  body of  teacher,  staff,  student,  and  community  leaders  working  together on  school-­wide  campaigns  like  Anti-­Bullying  Week  and  the  Hope Campaign  (pictured).  READ  MORE

Conference  in  Palm  Springs from  October  24-­25,  2014  and will  focus  on  the  upcoming standardized  assessments  and how  to  implement  the  new California  Common  Core  State Standards  for  Mathematics  in the  classroom.  MORE

The  Myra  Sadker  Foundation Teacher  Awards  are  designed to  promote  and  support classroom  and  school  projects that  help  students  learn  about and  promote  equity  in  and beyond  school.  Awards  range from  $1,000  to  $2,000.   Deadline:  rolling  throughout  the year.  APPLY  HERE The  Toshiba  America Foundation   is  accepting  applications  from teachers  who  are  passionate about  making  science  and mathematics  more  engaging  for their  students.  Grant  requests for  $5,000  or  more  will  be accepted  and  reviewed February  1st.     APPLY  HERE

  DIRECTV  Fosters  Learning with  Math  Challenge Now  in  its  second  year,  the DIRECTV  Math  Challenge  fosters  a love  of  math  in  elementary  and middle  school  students  through  a variety  of  incentives,  including  field trips,  backpacks,  pizza  parties  and more.     The  Math  Challenge  awards  students  based  on  progress  using  the ST  Math  blended  learning  program,  as  well  as  based  on  aggregate classroom  and  school  math  results.  In  May,  DIRECTV  brought exclusive  end-­of-­year  events  to  the  campuses  of  the  grand  prize-­ winning  elementary  and  middle  schools  to  celebrate  math achievement.  Students  at  Sunrise  Elementary  and  Gompers  Middle School  had  the  opportunity  to  practice  their  math  skills  through  a variety  of  hands-­on  experiences  beyond  the  classroom.  Thank  you DIRECTV  for  your  support!    VIEW  GALLERY  

  Two  Partnership  teachers  have  joined  the  Partnerships  Board  of Directors.  We  welcome  Traci  Taylor,  99th  St.  Elementary  teacher and  Joy  Lee,  Roosevelt  High  School  math  teacher.   Congratulations  to  Math,  Science  &  Technology  Magnet  Academy at  Roosevelt!  With  94%  of  10th  graders  passing  both  the  ELA  and math  CAHSEE  in  March,  the  school  was  ranked  #3  in  CAHSEE pass  rates  among  all  LAUSD  schools.   Kudos  to  Mendez  High  School  and  Math,  Science  &  Technology Magnet  Academy  at  Roosevelt  for  not  only  passing  the  WASC inspection,  but  for  being  renewed  for  six  more  years!   Roosevelt  Magnet  student,  Roxana  Ayala,  attended  the  White House  Science  Fair  to  participate  in  a  press  conference  with President  Obama  and  Esri  to  announce  a  $1B  investment  in  cloud-­ based  STEM  Software.  See  her  photo  with  Obama.   FOX  Sports  West  celebrated  Santee  Education  Complex's  National Champion  Cheerleading  squad  by  bringing  in  the  FOX  Sports  West Girls  to  speak  to  the  cheerleaders  and  give  them  sweaters  and backpacks.       Two  Gompers  Middle  School  students  will  take  part  in  the  ultimate space  adventure  when  they  attend  Space  Camp®  at  the  U.S. Space  and  Rocket  Center  (USSRC)  in  Huntsville,  Ala.  thanks  to  a grant  from  the  Northrop  Grumman  Foundation.
