TURNPIKE TUSSLE The softball version of the Turnpike Tussle comes to the Trusler Sports Complex as #25 Emporia State plays host to Washburn.

LAST AT BAT Tricia Vogel went four for six and drove in five of Emporia State’s ten runs in the Hornets double header sweep of #9 Missouri Western. ESU won game one 5-2 and took the nightcap 5-4 to take over sole possession of first place in the MIAA. The Griffons got on board with a run in the top of the third inning. The Hornets responded with a three run homer from Vogel in the bottom of the inning. Stephanie Goodwin gave the Hornets a pair of insurance runs in the fifth with a home run. Karley Schmelzer scattered nine hits over 7.0 innings, struck out seven and had one walk to pick up her eighth win of the season. MWSU got ahead early again in the nightcap taking a 2-0 lead in the third. Taylor Reichard started the Hornet come back with a lead off homer in the fifth and tied it when Zordel scored on a ground ball. Vogel broke the tie with a two RBI single and Self made it 5-2 with a sac fly. The Griffons scored two in the seventh before Schmelzer pitched the final .2 innings to pick up her second save of the year. Laurne Sharp allowed four runs, three of them earned on seven hits in 6.1 innings to earn her fifth win. THE COACHES Julie LeMaire is 19-7 in her first season at Emporia State and is 111-84 in her fourth season as a head coach. She came to ESU from Ft. Hays State and took the Tigers to the MIAA Tournament Championship game last season. She was 4-3 against Washburn while at FHSU. Vanessa Becerra is 11-13 in her first year at Washburn and 45-31 in her second season overall as a head coach. This is her first meeting with ESU.

SCOUTING WASHBURN The Lady Blues are 13-13 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA after starting the season 1-7 in Oklahoma and Texas. They have won seven in a row and eight of their last nine games. Kacy Covert is batting .411 with 11 runs and five RBI while Lindsey Moore is hitting .333 with four homers and 19 RBI and is 5-4 with a 4.38 ERA in the circle. Kayla Oldham is 6-7 with a 3.28 ERA in the circle. WU batters lead the MIAA in hit by pitch on the season and have been called for a league high five illegal pitches with runners on base this season. SERIES AGAINST THE BLUES ESU leads WU 74-53-1 and has won 24 straight games against the Lady Blues. The Hornets have not lost to the Lady Blues since a 4-3 loss on April 20, 2005 in Topeka. The last Emporia State loss to Washburn in the Trusler Sports Complex was a 10-7 decision in game two when they split a double header on March 16, 2004. LAST TIME VS. WU The Hornets swept the Lady Blues in a double header at the WU Softball Complex. Abby Hughes went three for four with three runs and three RBI for ESU in a 9-0 run rule win in the first game. Kaitlin Martin hit a solo homer for the only runs ESU would need in the second game a 3-0 Hornet win. Karley Schmelzer got a win and a save on the day, tossing a three hit shutout in the first game and working two hitless innings for the save in the night cap. UP NEXT ESU continues their home stand with a double header against Ft. Hays State in the Trusler Sports Complex on Saturday. First pitch on Applebee's Autograph Day is set for 12 noon. Posters will be available after the double header in the dugout of Turnbull Field.

Game Notes #25 Emporia State vs. Washburn March 30, 2012

BIG BIRD First baseman Tricia Vogel (So./Clearwater, Kan.) ws four for six with five RBI in the double header sweep of Missouri Western. Her three run homer in game one against MWSU was the game winner. She is batting .419 with eight doubles, four home runs and 33 RBI this season. She is batting .618 in MIAA play with a 1.088 slugging percentage. She is hitting a team best .500 with runners on base and .543 with runners in scoring position and has a .462 batting average with two outs on the year. She was four for six with three RBI and four runs scored in the first game against West Texas A&M. She was named MIAA Hitter of the Week after going batting .615 with a 1.545 slugging percentage in the first weekend of conference play. She has come up to bat a team best seven times with the bases loaded and has four hits in those situations including a grand slam against Northwest Missouri. She is ranked 13th in the nation in RBI per game, 83rd in batting average, and 112th in slugging percentage and doubles per game. She leads the MIAA in RBI, is fourth in batting average, total bases and hits, sixth in slugging percentage and doubles, and eighth in on base percentage. She hit just .184 in 22 games for the Hornets last season. GOOD ONE Outfielder/designated player Stephanie Goodwin (Fr./Overland Park, Kan.) hit a two run homer against Missouri Western, for her 12th extra base hit of the year. She is batting .435 with 24 runs scored, five doubles, three triples, four home runs and 18 RBI in 22 games and has a slugging percentage of .768 on the year. She has reached base in 21 of 22 games this year and her batting average has yet to dip below .400 on the season. She has a .500 on base percentage when leading off an inning. She is ranked 17th in the nation in triples per game, 21st in total triples, 34th in runs per game, 48th in batting average and slugging percentage, and 62nd in on base percentage. She is leading the MIAA in batting average, is ranked second in slugging percentage, triples and on base percentage, third in runs scored, and eighth in total bases. She hit .615 for Kansas Class 5A state runner-up Blue Valley HS last season. PETS IN THE ZOO Left fielder Andrea Piezuch (So./Lenexa, Kan.) ws two for four with a run scored in game two against Missouri Western and had an outfield assist in the seventh inning. She is batting .371 with two doubles, two triples, and two homers and 14 runs in 17 games this season. She has a .400 on base percentage that balloons to .500 when leading off an inning this season. She is batting .386 with 11 runs scored in 12 games in her return to the lineup after missing nine games with an injury. She hit a lead-off home run in game two against West Texas. She is sixth in the MIAA in triples but does not qualify for the national rankings due to the number of games played. She hit .302 last year with 25 runs scored and did not commit an error in the outfield in 58 chances. BREW'S CREW Center fielder Jessica Brewer (Jr./Kansas City, Mo.) is batting .321 with a team high 29 runs scored on the season. She has reached base in 19 straight games and has scored a run in seven straight games. She is hitting .429 with two outs this season. She is ranked 28th in the nation in runs per game and is 90th in strikeouts per at bat. She is ranked second in the MIAA in runs scored and fifth in stolen bases. She was named first-team All-MIAA in the outfield last season and was named honorable mention All-MIAA as a freshman. TOP SHELF Catcher Amanda Self (Jr./Blue Springs, Mo.) went three for five in the double header sweep of Missouri Western. She is batting .320 on the season with seven doubles, two home runs, 17 RBI and 13 walks. She has a .430 on base percentage, is batting .353 with runners in scoring position and has seven two out RBI. She is on an eight game hitting streak and has raised her average 85 points during the streak. She is sixth in the MIAA in walks and ranks third in runners picked off. Only 14 players have tried to steal on her this year and she has thrown out three with two pick-offs. She earned third-team All-American honors last season for the Hornets and was named second-team All-MIAA. She hit .397 with five home runs and 47 RBI last season. She had just one error in 370 chances and only three passed balls behind the plate last season. She was an honorable mention All-MIAA selection as a freshman.

2012 Softball THE RIGHT CARD Second baseman Taylor Reichard (So./Belton, Mo.) had a solo home run ot cut the MWSU lead in half and start ESU's comback in game two against the Griffons. She is batting .315 with six doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI. She is hitting .393 with runners on base and .389 with runners in scoring position. She is ranked ninth in the MIAA in slugging percentage. She was a second-team AllMIAA selection at third base last season after hitting .282 with three homers and 24 RBI. TODAY Right fielder Kendra Gifford (Fr./Chapman, Kan.) is batting .274 with three doubles, 18 RBI and four home runs on the year. She has scored 16 runs, been walked a team best 14 times and is four for four on stolen base attempts. She hit a grand slam against West Texas on the first pitch after a 30 minute rain delay. She is batting .325 with runners on base and .320 with runners in scoring position. She has a team best ten two-out RBI in 23 such at bats this season. She is ranked 103rd in the nation and fifth in the MIAA in walks. She was an All-NCKL pick at Chapman HS. IT'S NOT GRAGGING Third baseman Jessica Gragg (Fr./Topeka, Kan.) was three for three with a double in game two against Missouri Western. She is batting .357 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 17 games with 13 starts this season. She is hitting .600 with the bases empty on the year. Six of her 11 RBI have come in six plate appearances with a runner on third and less than two outs. She was an all-state performer for Topeka HS last season. TAYLOR MADE Shortstop Taylor Zordel (Fr./Topeka, Kan.) hit .455 with four runs scored in ESU's four games against nationally ranked teams last week. She is batting .309 on the season, with two home runs, 14 RBI,15 runs scored and is eight of nine on stolen base attempts. She hit .545 with four runs scored in her first four MIAA road games and is hitting .357 with nine runs, seven RBI and six stolen bases over her last ten games. She is the 33rd toughest player to strikeout in the nation with one strike out in every 34.0 at bats and is ranked second in the MIAA in that category. She is ranked fifth in the MIAA in stolen bases. She was an NFCA HS All-American for Washburn Rural HS. GARDEN OF EDEN Pitcher Karley Schmelzer (Jr./Garden Plain, Kan.) has six wins, a save and a no decision in her last eight appearances. She is 8-2 with a 2.89 ERA and two save on the season and opponents are batting just .219 against her. She has 77 strike outs in 70.1 innings pitched this season. She was named MIAA Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 with a no-hitter in the opening week of MIAA play. She threw her second no hitter of the year and third of her career against SBU. She tossed her first no hitter of the year against Henderson State with 12 strikeouts. She is ranked 15th in the nation in saves, 28th in strikeouts per seven innings, 53rd in shutouts, 78th in total strike outs, 87th in hits allowed per seven innings, 100th in wins, and 148th in ERA. She is ranked second in the MIAA in saves, third in strikeouts, fourth in opponents batting average and wins, and tenth in ERA. She was named second-team All-MIAA last season. She was 19-7 with three saves and a 1.08 ERA on the season and struck out a team best 170 batters in 175.1 innings pitched. She was ranked second in MIAA and ninth in nation in ERA. She tossed a five inning no hitter against Southwest Baptist and took a no hitter into the sixth against Angelo State in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament before ending with a one hit shutout.

2012 Softball SHARPEN UP Pitcher Lauren Sharp (Fr./Gladstone, Mo.) is 5-2 with a 3.79 ERA in nine appearances this season. She struck out four Lady Buffs in 3.0 innings to get the win in ESU's 19-11 extra inning win at #23 West Texas. She is ranked 11th in the MIAA in wins and 15th in opponents batting average. She was 5-3 with a 2.93 ERA last season. She gave up five earned runs in her last 27.0 innings pitched for a 1.30 ERA. She had 32 strikeouts in 43.0 innings of work. One of her losses last season came despite not giving up a run in 4.0 innings of work against Central Oklahoma due to the international tie breaker. HEAR YE, HEAR YE! Pitcher Jennifer Heerey (Sr./Wichita, Kan.) is 6-3 with a 2.75 ERA with seven complete games in nine starts this season. She has 54 strike outs in 56.0 innings pitched. She is ranked 101st in the nation in shut outs. She is ranked seventh in the MIAA in strike outs, eighth in wins and ERA, and 11th in opponents batting average. She is hitting .214 with a .405 on base percentage in 28 at bats this season but has not stepped to the plate since February 26. She was named honorable mention All-MIAA in the circle last year. She was 12-6 with a 2.62 ERA with one save and had 107 strikeouts in 123.0 innings of work. She had one double and one triple to go along with four RBI at the plate for the Hornets last season. She was named second-team All-MIAA as a sohomore after earning honorable mention All-MIAA honors as a freshman. She won 21 straight decisions after dropping the opening game of last season to break Truman's Jennifer Hulsopple's MIAA record of 19 straight wins set in 1999. She has won 60 games in her ESU career. HOME COOKING The Hornets have won 63 of their last 69 games at the Trusler Sports Complex overall. ESU has hosted five regional tournaments since 1996 and four since 2005. The Hornets are 15-7 in NCAA Tournament games at the Trusler Sports Complex. SUCCESS IN MAY The Hornets have a 31-18 overall record in NCAA Tournament play. The Hornets are 20-7 in post season elimination games (MIAA and NCAA tournament) over the past seven years. HORNET HISTORY Emporia State has finished as the NCAA Division II National Runnersup twice, in 2006 and 2008. ESU has qualified for NCAA Regional play eight straight years and nine times in the last 16 seasons. The Hornets won the NAIA National Championship in 1983 and 1984 and won the AIAW National Championship in 1980. BY THE NUMBERS • The Hornets have won at least 40 games in each of the last eight years. • Teams currently in the South Central Region have played in five of the last 12 national championship games. • Emporia State is one of just two NCAA Division II schools in the nation to have their softball, baseball, men's outdoor track & field and women's outdoor track & field teams all ranked in the top 30 nationally.
