SOUNDINGS COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Soundings program is an integral component of Castleton’s general education program. Soundings is a rich sampling of the liberal arts, broadly understood to encompass humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and natural sciences. The Soundings faculty represents a variety of disciplines and seeks to present diverse and rewarding experiences for students.
OBJECTIVES: Broad objectives that students develop in the following areas: * Personal development * Appreciation of diversity * Ability to connect Soundings to the broader liberal arts disciplines and majors * Self-awareness, self-reflection, and self-expression * Local and global awareness Specific objectives include: *Attending a variety of events and demonstrating proper etiquette during events, e.g., being courteous to performers, lecturers, and other audience members. *Writing relevant, well-constructed, reflective responses to event questions posed by Soundings instructors.

TICKETS:
Non-Soundings students, family members, faculty, staff, and the general public are welcome to attend Soundings events. Although Soundings students get into all Soundings events for free, some events do charge for guests to attend. Those tickets may be purchased at the Fine Arts Center Box Office. Soundings events held outside of Casella Theater are open to the public, provided seating is still available after all of the Soundings students have arrived. Non-Soundings students will then be admitted into the event on a first come, first served basis. For questions about a particular event, please contact the Fine Arts Center Box Office at: (802) 468-1119 between 10am - 4:30pm on Monday-Friday.
EVENT QUESTIONS/WRITTEN RESPONSES: •
At the end of each Soundings event, following the attendance upload, the prompt for the event question will be made available on Moodle.
•
Students have 1 week after each event to submit their responses online. Late responses will not be accepted.
•
Save your response: It is highly recommended that students write their responses in a Word program, SAVE THEM, and copy/paste into the text box. Then, if the response does not submit for some reason, there is a record.
•
Grading: The Soundings instructors will read and evaluate each response. To pass, responses must be thoughtful, detailed, and thoroughly answer the question with a minimum of 5-7 relevant sentences. o Passing: If a response is acceptable, the student will have successfully completed a Soundings event. A passing grade will be noted as a “1” under that event in Moodle and will be listed 2 weeks after the event. o NOT Passing: If a response does not pass, the student will receive a ‘0’ for a grade, and an email from an instructor within 2 weeks of the event providing an opportunity to re-write the response to pass. The revised response must be returned to the instructor within 3 weeks of the event to be re-evaluated. o For issues regarding grades, please inform an instructor within 3 weeks of the event (1 week after grades are posted). Grade disputes will not be considered beyond that deadline. Please do not contact an instructor regarding a grade until grades are posted 2 weeks after the event.

SOUNDINGS ETIQUETTE:
Soundings events are attended by students, community members, faculty/staff, and the general public. The overall success of these events is dependent on courteous and considerate audience behavior. One of the fundamental goals of the Soundings program is to present exciting, enjoyable, enlightening events to the student body and the communityat-large. To that end, we bring in world-class artists who have performed all over the world as well as presentations from your fellow classmates. These performers and lecturers deserve your respect and attention. Unruly, inconsiderate behavior will not be tolerated! Consequences for behavior that has been deemed inappropriate by the Soundings instructors, staff members, or any Castleton University representative can result in: • Zero credit for the attendance of that event • Those students may be asked to leave the event • In extreme cases, the student(s) will automatically fail the Soundings course, regardless of the number of events they previously attended
A Few Specific Guidelines: •
• • • • • • •
Turn off all cell phones and electronic devices before the lights dim. This includes the light on cell phones, which may NOT be used during the performance. Performers and neighbors deserve a distraction-free environment. Sit hat-free and hood-free so as not to block the view of others. Do not prop your feet up on the seat in front of you. Food, beverages, water bottles, etc. do not belong in the theater or other performance venues. Students with these items will be asked to leave them outside. Save conversations for intermissions. Once a performance has begun, the only times to leave a performance venue is during intermission and at the end. Invite off-campus friends and family to cultural events on our campus! Enjoy the presentation!
PARTICIPATING IN EVENTS: Soundings I students may receive credit for up to two events in which they participate. To receive credit, sign in with an usher and present your ID card before and after the event. Proceed with answering the event question as with any other event.
