2012 Southeast Missouri Spring Football Notebook Redhawks Set to Begin Spring Drills Southeast Missouri will officially begin its preparation for the 2012 season when it opens spring drills on Apr. 2. Southeast will have 15 practices, with its annual spring game slated for Saturday, Apr. 28. All practices and scrimmages are open to the public and held at Houck Stadium. See the Redhawks complete spring practice schedule below.

Association Region 3 Coach of the Year after leading the Redhawks to their first-ever conference title and NCAA Playoff appearance in 2010. He is currently 25-43 overall and 15-32 in the OVC at Southeast.

2011 season. A native of nearby Jackson, Mo., Peiffer earned multiple All-America honors, securing a spot on the Sports Network/Fathead.com, Associated Press and College Sports Madness Football Championship Subdivision All-America Teams. Peiffer led the team and ranked third in the nation with 13.7 tackles per game and garnered FirstTeam All-Ohio Valley Conference laurels, as well. He registered double-digit tackles in 10 of 11 starts and broke Southeast’s single-season record with a total of 151 tackles a year ago.

Quarterback Spot Up for Grabs Southeast will have a big hole to fill at quarterback after losing three-year starter Matt Scheible. Scheible capped his outstanding Southeast career with All-Conference honors in each of the last Spring Roster Breakdown The Redhawks have 85 play- two seasons. He became the first player in Ohio Valley Conference ers listed on their 2012 spring history to pass for 4,000 and rush roster. That group includes nine for 2,000 yards in a career as a returning starters on offense and eight on defense. Southeast senior a year ago. Scheible completed 123-of-223 passes (55.2 also returns three specialists, including kicker Drew Geldbach, pct.) for 1,459 yards and 12 touchpunter Joe Vucic and long snap- downs, and rushed for 967 yards and nine TDs in 2011. Peiffer Tied for 16th in Career Tackles Linebacker Blake Peiffer currently stands tied for 16th in career tackles at Southeast. Peiffer has accumulated 242 tackles in 33 games since joining the Redhawks in 2009. He shares that spot with Ken Harmon (242 tackles, 1980-83). Davis Makes OVC All-Newcomer Team Wide receiver/return specialist Spencer Davis is back after earning Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer accolades in 2011. Davis placed himself among Southeast’s single-season kick return leaders when he ran back 37 kicks for 760 yards, averaging 20.5 yards per return. He led the OVC in all-purpose yardage (138.7 ypg), finishing with 250 yards rushing and 314 yards receiving. Davis had a teamhigh three receiving touchdowns and scored one other TD on the ground as a redshirt-freshman. O-Line Experience Southeast returns six offensive linemen who had starting experience in 2011. Colt McCauley, Evan Conrad, Dominic Maldonado and Matt Shannon started all 11 games. McCauley was at left guard, while Conrad played nine games at left tackle and two at

right guard. Maldonado made all of his starts at right tackle, while Shannon played center. Meanwhile, Tyler French started six games at tight end and Pete Niggemann started the first four games of the season at right guard. The Specialists Special teams wise, the Redhawks are in good shape. Southeast returns three starters, including kicker Drew Geldbach, punter Joe Vucic and long snapper Brandon Gabbard. Geldbach was the team’s second-leading scorer with 44 points on 7-of-13 field goals and 23-of-26 PATs a year ago. Vucic was the Ohio Valley Conference’s top punter in 2011. He punted 44 times for 1,807 yards, averaging 41.1 yards per kick. Vucic also saw 11 of his punts travel 50 or more yards. Gabbard has started every game of his Southeast career. Spring Practice Interview Procedures Southeast football student-athletes and coaches are available for media interviews on Mondays and Wednesdays after practice during spring drills. Practices on those days are scheduled for 6-8 a.m. All practices will be held at Houck Stadium. Media interviews will also be conducted after both of the Redhawks scrimmages (Apr. 14, Apr. 21) and following the team’s spring game (Apr. 28). Times for those three events are Noon-2 p.m. at Houck Stadium. Spring Game and Spring Party Set for April 28 Southeast’s practices will culminate with the team’s annual spring game scheduled for Noon2 p.m., CT, at Houck Stadium on Saturday, Apr. 28. Afterwards, fans are invited to join the Redhawks at their spring party. The event is set for 6 p.m., CT, at Kimbeland Country Club.

2012 Southeast Missouri Spring Football Notebook Welcome to Southeast Southeast Missouri head football coach Tony Samuel revealed his 2012 signees on Feb. 1. Seventeen players from nine different states comprise Samuel’s seventh recruiting class at Southeast. Southeast added five players to its defensive front and three at quarterback. Austin Black (6-0, 255, Warrenton, Mo.), Selwyn Carrol (6-2, 255, Jacksonville, Fla.), Lawrence Hills (63, 230, Jacksonville, Fla.), Travis Sanders (6-3, 220, St. Clair, Mo.) and Jon Slania (6-2, 270, Chicago, Ill.) are the new defensive linemen. Black was ranked 16th on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Super 30 list at Warrenton High School, where he registered 108 tackles as a senior. Carrol and Hills are both out of Florida. Carrol garnered 3A All-State honors at Trinity Christian Academy, while Hills ranked sixth in Class 4A with 13 sacks at West Nassau High School. Sanders joins the Redhawks after earning Four Rivers Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors at St. Clair High School. Slania was a two-time All-Upstate Eight AllConference selection at South Elgin High School. Southeast, which lost a three-year starter and record-setting quarterback in Matt Scheible, welcomes Kyle Snyder (6-1, 225, Barberton, Ohio), Blake Jackson (6-0, 210, Houston, Texas) and Colby Baker (5-11, 175, Hardee, Fla.). Snyder, who is currently enrolled at Southeast and will participate in spring drills, played five games at Mid-American Conference member Ohio University last season. He completed 5-of-8 passes for 38 yards in a backup role for the Bobcats who came up short against Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship game. Ohio later defeated Utah State in the Idaho Potato Bowl, the school’s first-ever bowl game. Baker led Hardee High School to the second round of the State Playoffs,

completing 39-of-73 passes for 618 yards and six touchdowns along the way. Jackson was limited to two games in his senior season at Dobie High School due to injury. Prior to that, he threw for 1,036 yards and 10 touchdowns, and rushed for 980 yards and nine TDs as a junior. Tackle Garret Baker (6-2, 270, Owensville, Mo.), running back DeMichael Jackson (5-11, 180, Louisville, Ky.) and wide receivers Paul McRoberts (6-3, 185, St. Louis, Mo.), Terry Grigsby (6-1, 170, Omaha, Neb.) and BJ Buckner (6-1, 180, St. Louis, Mo.) are the Redhawks other additions on offense. Baker was a First-Team AllArea honoree at Owensville High School. Jackson had a stellar career at Jeffersontown High School, where he earned First-Team All-State accolades. Jackson ranked third in the state of Kentucky in rushing with 2,093 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging 172 yards per game. He also completed 84-of-172 passes for 1,196 yards. In addition, Jackson piled up 4,000 all-purpose yards and scored a total of 47 touchdowns as a senior. McRoberts, the Public High Small Schools Offensive Player of the Year at Soldan High School, led the metro region with 1,607 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns a year ago. Grigsby was rated a two-star athlete by Rivals.com and attended North High School, the same high school as Southeast fullback Ron Coleman. He had 48 catches for 907 yards and 12 touchdowns en route to All-State honors as a senior. Buckner, a Second-Team All-State pick at Kirkwood High School, threw for 1,202 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior. He ended his prep career with over 2,000 yards of total offense. interception en route to SecondTeam All-State laurels during his senior year at Raytown High School. Meanwhile, Darden-Box, who can play several positions, led Pearl-Cohn High School to the Tennessee State quarterfinals. Offensively, he ran for 1,017 yards and six touchdowns on 159 carries, averaging 6.4 yards per attempt. Defensively, Darden-Box added 63 tackles, including 20 solo stops.
