New Life Yellow jonquils waving in the March breeze and the deep pink blossoms of Japanese Magnolias are welcome reminders that spring is near. Soon the dormant landscape of dead leaves and bare trees will be transformed into one full of life with vibrant colors. The promise of this anticipated transformation lifts our spirits, gives us hope and is a wonderful metaphor for our Lenten journey.
promise that comes through the resurrection of Jesus the Christ. It is a humbling and awesome reality to grasp that the same creative power that brought all we see into existence is the same creative power that resurrected Jesus and the same that transforms our lives, bringing hope and life to places that seem hopeless and dead.
In early February, we entered a season of spiritual renewal and growth marked by time set aside for prayer, meditation, introspection and confession. Hopefully, you entered this season with greater intentionality asking God to help you see your inner-self as well as others through the eyes of Jesus. This process provides an opportunity by the power and grace of God’s Spirit, to be forgiven, made whole and to see new growth bud and flourish like a beautiful flower.
I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19
I look on in awe each Spring as God’s created world is transformed from a lifeless appearance to one rich in growth, color and teaming with life. In just a few weeks we will celebrate Easter and the

Holy Week People in the Scottish highlands imagine that the way in which to measure the height of a mountain is to plumb the depth of the loch which lies at the foot of the mountain because the two measurements are thought to be identical. In a similar way, the dimensions of Christ’s love for us are to be discovered by plumbing the depths of the love which he showed for us on the cross, when he loved us and gave himself for us. It is only as we contemplate the final events of our Lord’s life on this earth that we discern the length and the breadth, the height and depth of the love of Christ. Holy Week helps us to trace the dimensions of our Lord’s love for us. I want to encourage you to fully participate in our journey together, following Jesus through our Holy Week services. The services are not stand alone events but part of an experience that fully engages us in the story that shapes and defines our lives. On Palm Sunday we will reflect on the ‘Servant King’ who enters into the city, not riding in a triumphant procession but on a donkey. During our Good Friday service, we will explore one of the final expressions of our Lord’s love for his family and his followers as he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son’ and then he said to the disciple, ‘here is your mother." On Easter Sunday we rejoice in the presence of the Risen Christ as we reflect on the message of the angels, "He is not here! He is risen!" Let’s join together as a community of faith to explore the meaning of Holy Week.

[email protected] Meet Your Neighbors! Each month, we feature one of the nonprofits housed in Southside's building to help you better get to know those who share our space. Meet Alabama Possible! Alabama Possible (http://alabamapossible.org) is a statewide nonprofit organization that removes barriers to prosperity in Alabama through education, collaboration, and advocacy. Our research-driven work is designed to broaden relationships and enhance capacity building, with a focus on addressing systemic poverty. We believe that it is possible for all Alabamians to lead prosperous lives, and our programs work to make that possibility a reality. We have been working to change the way people think and talk about poverty in Alabama since 1993. It was then that a group of concerned citizens, including Auburn University President Wilford Bailey, Auburn History Professor Emeritus Wayne Flynt, Social Work Pioneer Eulene Hawkins, and Alabama Baptist Convention President Earl Potts, came together to form Alabama Possible, then known as the Alabama Poverty Project. They joined with others across the South to study poverty, publicize their findings, teach undergraduates what they had learned, and mobilize public policy to bring about systems change.
